Just curious do people think that Blairsville will ever attract any industry?

Not as log as we have a commissioner who has nothing on the brain but receration and retirees.

No. I hope not. This is a lovely retirement area and let's leave it like that.

We have the same issues in Ellijay. I don't believe retirees by them self can keep a community going. For the life of me, I don't see why elected officials haven't figured that out by now. The mountain counties are desperately in need of some industry. If each county along 515 had a couple of businesses that employed a few hundred people each it would go along way to solving a lot of our problems and still keep the mountains beautiful. On a side note , while in The Cookie Jar yesterday, I noticed in the local paper Blairsville was having money short falls in the school system also. We have had that problem here too. We shut down one school in trying to cut money along with several other unpleasant things. I hope you fair better.

You know that is all wonderful if you have retired here, but if you are still trying to make a living it is not so wonderful. I believe with a little common sense we can have the best of both worlds. Do you think that the retirees in Blairsville , can pay all the bills?

And who sustains all the lovely amenities we now have? Do you have any idea what it cost just to provide utilities for the mansion on the hill? The cost of building which will cost us over $8 million at the end?

How about has for all the county vehicles?

School teacher salaries etc?

Are you that clueless that you think us retired folks can continue to pay the way for every folly in this county without any help?

Get real!

Unless the city and county shop for big industry and make concessions, none will come.
Small industry has been killed by Obama... Mom and pop that hire 10 to 20 workers are gone. I was forced to shut down the Fashion Shack shortly after last election.

Slow, I do agree with you. We need medium to large size businesses . Not knocking Mon and Pop businesses , but they can't really hire enough to make a difference. A company employing 150-200 people really can impact a community. I worked for a place here in Ellijay that was about that size. When it shut down it hurt the community big time. We had people working from Blairsville, Blue Ridge and Cooperhill. It shut down and moved to South America.

My prayers are with the Supreme Court of the United States to right this devastating wrong committed by the Democrats against the American people, which is killing jobs and a brazen attempt by the federal government to control 1/6 of our economy. Government overreach and a violation of our Constitution.

Yet you and granny ACOG continue to bitch and moan because Paris built spec buildings in hopes of attracting industry.

So which is it, Mr. Brain Surgeon, are you mad because the county spent money for industrial development or because there is no industry. Choose your words carefully.

Well the truth is that I am unhappy that they 1/2 ass built 2 buildings which are not usable for anything with money they borrowed which we will end up having to pay for because the industry that we need and Lamar doesn't want will not utilize two 1/2 finished 1/2 ass buildings. Did I choose my words correctly enough for you small brain to comprehend.

Do you really think we had 1/2 million dollars just sitting in the county bank account to build something that might not ever get used. The buildings have been sitting empty over a year now.

People are lining up to view these 3 sided shells. For those of you that have not seen them they have three sides and a concrete floor, the rest is wide open to the elements. These buildings could have been built in no time had someone really wanted to locate here.

It's all about spending and waste. Don't tell me about the government loan that Purdue promised in Aug 2010. The money was not there when we checked in Aug 2011. The money still was not there. The county started the project in Oct 2010.

The money was for only 484,010 and the bid started out at $430,459.57 but was invoiced $507,006. The county is asking for Federal funds in the amount of $151,770. for the road to be built.

Where will the Federal funds come from?

Where will the State get the One Georgia Equity Loan money?

Where did the SPLOST money come from that was spent on this project?

Where did the money come from to fund this project?

Do politicians really think we are that stupid. No matter how you toss the dice we are paying the bills and the interest.

Obama says the private sector is doing well, so why not! LOL

This is a down economy, jobs are minimal, businesses have and are moving out of the country, so what makes Blairsville a perfect place for industry. Get your heads out of the sand, rubbernecks.

Companies, if they are going to open, are going to be nearer Atlanta, not in the mountains where everything is a couple hours from civilization.

Hey, if they aren't bitching about this, they are bitching about dogs and cats, farmer's markets, and anything else they can dig up. At least anyone with a brain realizes this country's industry is at a standstill and not doing too well.

Your right on. If the elected officials don't go and sell the advantages there will be no manufacturing/industry. Industry today is not going to come looking. The State of GA has sveral agencies that have helped other areas get new manufacturing business to move in.
Not only Blairsville, but the whole area either doesn't know how or doesn't want to pursue business.

What exactly is the advantages Union county has to offer? All I can see we have to offer is available land and that is available all up and down 515.

There is no tax incentives. No candy to waive in front of potential clients. Seems none of our "elected" officials can understand a hefty tax break (or no tax at all for a limited time) would still be profitable for the county as a whole due to an added income injection into the local economy.

As far as Blairsville itself goes ... leadership in town doesn't seem to want new business. From what I am reading if a new business wanted to open today downtown it would be July the 10th before they could actually ring up the first customer legally (due to business license only being approved at one monthly meeting) and up to sixty days before a sigh advertising the new business could be erected( due to moratorium).

Even then the new business would have no idea what type of sign could be erected as that seems to be dictated by what part of an illegal zone you have been placed in and how well the mayor's attitude is towards you.

Well you have just hit the nail on the head sweetie. And the very reason we are all raising a stink.

There's no way new companies are coming here so we need to be CAREFUL with our tax dollars and not spend willy billy on everything we possibly can just because we can. And we need a commissioner that will watch our tax dollars. And it is NOT illLamar.

And it's not enough in a county of probably at least 12,000 to 14,000 able bodied workers.
