I hope that isn't true. There will be many disappointed voters/taxpayers if he doesn't follow through.

Just curious- what is "wrong" with the ladies in the tag office? Just last month, one of them helped me "avoid" a penalty due to my ignorance of the law... which I TRUELY appreciated. She didn't HAVE to treat me kindly... but she did without me asking.

Why do you suggest they should be fired?

Here is the problem. Several crimes were committed in the tax office, some minor some very major. Either all knew about them or they should have. What ever the case I feel that the general(informed) public has zero trust in the office. Being nice and helpful does not erase this fact. I would rather have cold and honest than polite and naive or crooked. The office is dealing with huge sums of money, some of it cash ,that came from our pockets

Then it should be an easy matter for you to list each of these crimes, and list the scope of responsibiity for each person in the office for each crime.

All taxes paid by cash should be counted dual control and initialed by both parties. Every penny at the tax offic needs to be accounted for. There was absolutely no excuse for over 65,000.00 to be stolen.

I agree with you about preferring "honesty" over "kindness". However, it sounds from "Oh My's" comment that no charges have been filed- true? I assume that some kind of audit turned up discrepancies... or is it the Tax Commissioner that was caught and convicted of stealing? Is the assumption being made that Tag Office clerks should have known that their TC boss was stealing? If so, that seems a "stretch" in the absence of any proof to the contrary. And yes, I AM a former CPA/CFO/Controller and can attest that the TC's actions certainly COULD have been easily hidden from Tag Office clerks.

WHY would you want them fired when they haven't been charged with any crime... guilt by association? Seems they could sue for wrongful termination... but I am NOT a lawyer. Just wondering what YOU know that investigators didn't uncover...

Let Lee do his job, once he gets in office. As I understand it, Lee Knight becomes the Tax Commissioner on January 1, 2013. Let us give him a few weeks on the job before any changes that need to be made are made.

We (Union County) elected the man to the office. Now, let him do his job in the time frame he decides.

Regarding the duties of the Tax Commissioners office workers, the audit stated (my wording) that there is insufficient segregation of duties as it relates to handling money! Because the staff is so small most share duties and cash drawers thus lack of accountability. You will never get me to believe that the 65,000 dollar theft was the only criminal activity going on in the Tax Office. I often thought there were many fingerprints on the knife so to speak. Some good old fashion "I won't tell on you, if you don't tell on me". Of course those are just my inner feelings not an accusation towards any particular person. However, it makes one wonder when you read on another thread how the convicted thief is receiving special treatment in the County Jail? The practice of Payne taking govt. funds out and placing IOU's in the drawer are not new allegations and photo copies of the IOU's were even posted on the internet, please explain that because I can't. Why no criminal charges? Don't rock the boat if your life jacket has holes in it. I'm not saying Knight should clean house...it's imperative that he clean house. If not I think he will be a one term elected official. So if he wants to keep the best paying job he has ever had he better be a quick study on how that office runs or better yet he should hire an accounting firm to develop a system that will provide accountability and transparency!

It's not just tax money that's missing from the county. Ask those that know about the missing money from the golf course?

Y'all wanted change and you got it with Lee.
Now, just as I suspected, y'all will start second-guessing how he is doing his job and complaining before he starts his job. Lee is tax commish as of Jan 1st.

Next, y'all will be on Mason's ass about something.

Maybe the tax office should only accept money orders, personal or cashier's checks, credit or debit cards and no cash for payment. They should also get into the age of online bill pay.
