Feel free, if you have the desire, to tell more about Christmas in Blairsville "Back in the Day".

My own hometown had 458 people, our High School graduating class was 22 students strong, and every kid was "raised by the village", as every adult assumed responsibility to keep every kid safe and to make us behave. The times I would have been in jail, except the local cops and the parents handled those matters with a paddle, not handcuffs, terrify me now. God bless 'em.

I hope you do, those memories, and yours, are especially poignant during the Holidays.

BTW--At college in Chattanooga Jim Brock was called "Topper".

Small World,
Pastor Brock was a special kind of preacher in his time. He wasn't real theatrical and he didn't ram the word down your throat. He was mostly soft spoken as I recall and he was extremely articulate. He was a very sharp man and he had a great sense of humor. His sister should know that we were very lucky to have him :)

If you are who i think you are, you were a bit mischevious, but in a good way. You were blonde but, maybe, had a little red tint to your blonde? Like a strawberry blonde? Freckles? Am I close?

I think you might have mistaken him for Freckles the Clown

Parts,

I actually remember hearing that was his nick name. Do you recall why he was called Topper?
I think, I was white blonde when I was younger and had pretty bad haircuts as well. I did get more strawberry as I got older. I had some freckles but not whole bunch. I was pretty mischevious, hence, my familiarity with the paddles in school ;).
I had a pony named Cookie I bought from Kim Dyer when I was eight for twenty five dollars.

Do any of you remember Slim Wilson? He used to live somewhere north of the hospital. You might remember him by the name of Fats McGroygan.

One day, Fats was unloading steel plate from a flatbed trailer when the load shifted and fell on him, pinning him to the ground. He managed to survive his injuries but, he had to change his name.

Good story Zoltar.
Heard that one years ago from one of the blind Plotts (or maybe it is potts?) brothers that used to rebuild bicycles and sell 'em. He saw the whole thing! ;)

It was the Potts brothers. They lived next door to the Kettles family. The Kettles were of a dark skinned origin, but, I'm not sure what they were. Anyway, the Potts always called the Kettles, black.
At least, that's what I remember.

Zoltar, you tell a good tale...I believe my uncle Daddy's sister, Momma, was related to the Kettles,at least that's what my cousin, Me, told me. Cousin Me is a handsome fellow and pretty bright, truth be told, but he has been known to tell a tall one now and then so I don't know how much stock you can put in that.. ;)

Hope you don't mind me poking a little fun. I think this thread is great and I envy all of your memories of Blairsville.

I have only lived here for 12 years having escaped from the big city with all the traffic, noise and obnoxious people.

Now, for me, every day. I am thankful for being able to live in Union County. I love the mountains, the streams and the star filled nights. I really like the people that I have met and I am very lucky to have aquired some great friends. I'll try to stop with the bad jokes now.
