These 2 statements have nothing to do with each other. A low mill. rate does not equal low taxes. Does Union County have the 4th lowest property tax charges in the state? Not by a long shot. If the mill. is low the valuations have to be high pretty basic math

Don't you realize that the voters of Union County and the City of Blairsville don't have the sense to grasp what you are saying. They just vote the way they are told.

Union County is not a tax bargain; high evaluations, no senior exemptions for School Tax. My taxes are not much different from Atlanta Metro Counties in total dollars.

Since the paper stated that it was the 4th lowest rather than quoting someone, I won't accuse any local politician of providing bad information. By viewing the millage rates that are posted by State of Georgia on
https://etax.dor.ga.gov/ptd/cds/csheets/millr...
Union County Unincorporated millage rate is 7th, not 4th.

Here's probably a more reliable source of county ad valorem taxes facts than what politicians may say. It's prepared by Local Government Services Division of the State of Georgia:

In this weeks NGN, it looks like Lamar "mis-spoke" (you can say he lied if you want to) about the county being 4th in millage rate last year. The above website of the State of Georgia shows that for 2012 the county is 7th, not 4th.

That's not all he lied about!
How has the SPLOST sales tax helped keep our property taxes lower?

Lamar states that SPLOST pays for maintenance of Meeks Park and other county facilities.

I just read this under splost guidelines "SPLOST proceeds may not be used for maintenance and operation costs related to the proposed SPLOST projects or any previously approved projects. The primary intent behind SPLOST is to pay for specifically enumerated projects, not to balance the governmentÂ’s books or to pay for other governmental expenses."

Does Lamar Paris know how to tell the truth?
I think he got his nickname for that very reason "LIEMORE"

After reading this week's NGN's "Talking to Myself" by our commissioner, he continues to say the county has the 4th lowest rate when the state of Georgia says 7th. Also, by the IV on the end of SPLOST, we know that it's a new tax and the old one will expire. It isn't a renewal. If there is a John Doe III, is John Doe IV the same person? When will even the commissioner's supporters ask him to be forthright with the residents of our county?

I think most people who have a brain already knew about Paris and his many untruths but maybe this will make it clearer for the dumb ones.

If Georgia beats Florida in a football game that goes for a pre-defined period and they start playing again just after that period, is it a new game or a renewal of the same game. OK, along those lines, is the SPLOST IV a new tax or a renewal of the SPLOST III. See how silly and politically motivated, the commissioner's reasoning is?
