My brother is a local contractor and he has to advertise for help in Ellijay, Cumming & even Atlanta for qualified help. Locals have problems completing a basic job application and most references they give are suspect at best. He's developed a skills test and most of the local applicants end up scratching their heads and walk away, thus prompting him to advertise outside the immediate area. Criminal background checks of local applicants is another problem he has.

It's a crying shame.

Oh come on. These people can fill out and application.
And go to hillcrest and get a drug test. As far as Lilly white record, don 't you get a tax break hiring them.
What is his pay hourly wage, is he working them like a mule and paying peanuts?
We need some dam Yankees to come here and they know how to respect their employees.
Or better yet, let's get union workers to come to town, lol.
What I see is business , working people like multi task
mules. No respect, yet they give it.
Murphy is the same in manufacturers, fire hire fire. Come on,
You need time to learn the job, no vocational schools here.
No extra school classes for it, why no industry.
Empty manufacturers left building all over the place.

Train, patience, pay ,respect , what do you get, higher out put, increase business
Growth. Fear tactics don't work. Funny haven't seen a good paying job,
Ad,how does your brother know ,skilled labor has moved into this area.
With a clean record, maybe his ad writing skills aren't detailed enough.
When your right and everyone else is wrong, sounds like the fish stinks at the head.

A certain self serving group doesn't want any jobs to open up. They are the retired ass holes , Real Estate folks and our get rich off the backs of poor people town elites. They want a retirement community that has ample people to serve the upper crust. The only way you will ever see jobs again in Union County is get rid of the present politicians in both the court house and city hall. Did anyone read the story about the Down town dev. ass.'s in the paper. Going to spend a ton of money just to get a better off ramp from 515. At one time the off ramp was by the courthouse only and then they got one on the other side of the street and now they want to build another one. Always a way to spend the taxpayers money.

That is the biggest crock of crap I have ever read. What kind of contractor is he? He must contract to catch chickens. That would be the biggest reason he would advertise in Ellijay.

What are you smoking? When were jobs plentiful in Union County? My wife has to drive to Gainesville 5 days a week to go to work so the family can have health insurance & a retirement plan to pay into. I work in Murphy. Were things so prosperous under under Harold Cook, the tire changer? LOL

The manufacturing jobs once here are now in China & Mexico.

Thank you, George H.W. Bush.

Vocational schools? Isn't there a technical school in Blairsville?

Constant negative comments in the local newspaper and a mean-spirited attitude on Topix threads are good illustrations of why Blairsville can't compete for new jobs. "We HATE the Farmer's Market!" "The Reece Center is a waste of taxpayer dollars!" "Obama is a socialist who's coming to take our guns!" "Those floridiots and retirees are BAD!"
Manufacturers and other employers look for open and enriched communities, a tolerant and welcoming workforce, and social and cultural amenities. They want MORE things like the Market and Reece Center. They look for places where the population is well educated and welcomes diversity. They want a workforce that knows how to handle petty grievances without going ballistic and who are articulate in their acceptance of those with customs and beliefs different from their own.
We'll get more jobs in Blairsville when we can show that we understand what it takes to compete in the 21st century, and stop only looking back to the good ole days (which, as Trackrock points out, weren't all that good, in terms of employment.) Respect for tradition is a fine thing, but employers want a heck of a lot more than that from the people they consider hiring, and they want more than restaurants and churches to offer their workers.

Jobs have never been plentiful in Blairsville but they were some jobs available. Just where do you see any jobs now.How many companies have left Blairsville? How many new ones have come in. Harold Cook has nothing to do with the jobs in Blairsville but Paris certainly has. Paris doesn't give a hoot about the people just his own selfish bunch of crooks. That stupid security thing at the courthouse just to spend money on another worthless program. Anyone wanting to cause someone harm at the courthouse would simply sit in the parking lot until who ever they wanted walked by all those great windows he had built into the courthouse.

Not to mention, they don't work during deer season, they don't work during trout season, they don't work during turkey season. Come on folks, you do have to have priorities, just look at their living conditions. They're perfectly happy living in crap houses.

There is North Georgia Technical College in Blairsville GA. They offer courses with college credit now. In the past when manufacturing was more prominent the school in Clarkesville GA offered courses that helped management and other departments and gave CE credits . They will offer them again when there is a demand. All jobs require a drug test now, its no problem unless you have a habit. You are rude and disrespectful of everyone in your post. You should know that all employers have rules and if their company is to be successful they have to be fair to all. I am not defending the contractor but I imagine he needs workers that can show up before 10 am and actually finish at least an 8 hour day.

Lamar is perfectly happy the way things are. Manufacturing jobs would bring in additional people and increase the population. As previously noted the job pool of qualified workers is very small. Adding to the population would necessitate building and increasing the local infrastructure, something that Lamar and most of the locals don't want. But that's how communities grow and prosper, there's a trade off. No new industry, no younger families moving in = a slow dying community.

For years and years the men in this area have gotten up at 3 a.m. and drove to Atlanta to work. They have nice homes, families and have also managed fishing and hunting just fine as well as other sports. I have no idea how you live but if its bigger and a little better than a two -hole outhouse you are blest. People like you need to live under a bridge and dream of your priorities. The local people of Union County are blest in more ways than you could ever comprehend.

I can spot a local a mile away. He is courteous . Let's women go ahead of himself and smiles and says hello. Doesn't matter if it is the parking lot, in the store or on a street in town. His manners will give him away every time. Move-ins are like turkeys. If it rains they drown. Will run over you to get ahead and then come to a screeching halt. Look as though they have been eating persimmons all day. Always trying to get something for nothing and feel like you should work for them and not charge them because they were good enough to move here. I assume that is the way people are where ever move-ins came from and they don't know any better but if they will open their minds and pay attention t he locals might just teach them how to survive and be a good person at the same time.

Manufacturers are looking for tax breaks. Many of the contractors are looking for employees that do not have DUIs and that are allowed to drive. They are not looking for more people to move into the community, they are looking for those living here that are willing to work. They couldn't care less about those money pits, the Flea Market and the Reece Center. Yes, some employers will come when the atmosphere changes in the county. Yes, prospective employers would like a more tolerant atmosphere in the county. How many times have "intolerant" elitists in the county kept out employers because it might take away their own monopoly. The local elitists are happy to have retirees because the elitists have made, and some of the elitists will again make, money from questionable land and bank deals. The retirees have more discretionary money than the average employee. The clubhouse, built under questionable tactics, isn't for prospective employees. They aren't into that. It's more for the current retirees and for the county's elitists than for some manufacturing executive. By the way, I wonder if poker is played at the county facility.

Its hard to find a local with a high school diploma, that has an acceptable credit score, and hasn't been arrested for a DUI or drug use.
