An altar,
what a strange question.
Will a scarifice relieve your fears,
does your god require burnt offerings.
Fashion one yourself,
your belief gives it power,
then tuck it in the closet
for those times
when nothing else will do.
you said the sun was dying, Winter solstice ring a bell?

When do people start jumping off buildings and committing suicide, like that nurse did in England? Believe it or not, some impressionable people think this shit is serious.

Seriously. Why can't the Mayans just start a new calender? Old calender used up? Start a new one.

They did,
but what's amazing is that "Christians" are turning to the creation myths of a pagan religion and wrapping it with their fears of the future and justifying it all by being "prepared" for any happenstance that may be inflicted by the unseen gods.

Priceless entertainment.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesoamerican_Lon...

...Among other calendars devised in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, two of the most widely used were the 365-day solar calendar (the Maya version is known as the Haab') and the 260-day calendar, with 20 periods of 13 days. In Mayan studies this 260-day calendar is known as the Tzolk'in; the equivalent Aztec calendar is known by a Nahuatl name, tonalpohualli.

The Haab' and the Tzolk'in calendars identified and named the days, but not the years. The combination of a Haab' date and a Tzolk'in date identifies a specific date in a combination which did not occur again for 52 years. The two calendars based on 365 days and 260 days repeat every 52 Haab' years, a period generally known as the Calendar Round. To designate dates over periods longer than 52 years, some Mesoamericans utilized the Long Count calendar.

...According to the Popol Vuh, a book compiling details of creation accounts known to the K'iche' Maya of the Colonial-era highlands, we are living in the fourth world.[33] The Popol Vuh describes the first three creations that the gods failed in making and the creation of the successful fourth world where men were placed. In the Maya Long Count, the previous creation ended at the start of a 14th b'ak'tun.

The previous creation ended on a long count of 12.19.19.17.19. Another 12.19.19.17.19 will occur on December 20, 2012, followed by the start of the 14th b'ak'tun, 13.0.0.0.0, on December 21, 2012

Absolutely nothing is going to happen. The Gregorian calender we currently used is NOT the same the Mayans used. The calender type has changed many times over the centuries. In actuality, September 21 should have been the "mayan doomsday".

You would think that if the Mayans could predict that far ahead, they would have been able to foresee their own demise...
