Has anyone else noticed how much higher the cost of electricity is from this EMC compared to others in the surrounding areas? Is it just under poor management, or what is the problem?

You are correct. I have posted in another thread on this same subject that Blue Ridge rates were lower than Gapower, which is a private for profit company.
I retract that statement because the following links prove me wrong.

The below link will show that Blue Ridge EMC had the following rates for Winter 2011;

Out of 43 Utilities listed in this link Blue Ridge had the following;
Blue Ridge rank 13th highest our of 43 for the 500kw rate=13.2240 cents per kw

Ranked 9th highest out of 43 for the 1000kw rate=11.7550 cents per kw

Ranked 5th highest out of 43 for the 1500kw rate=11.2653 cents per kw

Ranked 4th highest out of 43 for the 2000kw rate=11.0205 cents per kw

and here's the link, click on the Winter EMC survey;

http://www.psc.state.ga.us/electric/surveys/r...

And below are the summer rates and the link will be at the bottom.

using the same 43 Utilities Blue Ridge ranked as follows;

Blue ranked 8th out of 43 for 500kw at 13.8620 cents per kw

Ranked 5th out of 43 for 1000 kw at 12.3920 cents per kw

Ranked 11th out of 43 for 1500 kw at 11.9027 cents per kw

Ranked 15th out of 43 for 2000 kw at 11.6575 cents per kw

Here's the link, click on the EMC summer survey and it will download the data in Excel format. Don't know why the winter survey opens up a web page and the summer survey opens up a download page for the Excel file.
I have my guesses, that being Janet stated the upload on the summer file to the website and took a break, then Tammy Sue finished the upload. Some call it efficiency in government, I call it typical bungling.
Again here's the link before I got off on a tangent.

http://www.psc.state.ga.us/electric/surveys/r...

well heck, it's the same link as the first one.

you will notice that summer rates are higher.
BUT, winter usage is usually more if you have all electric. And being you may use more electricity will account for a higher utility bill.

What does not count is why Blue Ridge charges more than most other EMC;s.

A part of the answer may be charge from the source
where the EMC gets it's electricity.

The biggest part is due to the Efficiency of operations provided by the EMC.

Another, as the poster above pointed out, is the new complex they are building in Young Harris.

If it's caused from the new complex, you can say a Major virus has struck our surrounding area.
It's called a "spending big and expensive" virus whether you need it or not.

and the other virus is "we don't just any old sorry building, we want the best we can get."

And the last virus, which is worst then the first 2 is "we don't care what our customers want, we do it our way." Some call this one the "Frank Sinatra" virus.

Actually they will have a Geo-thermal heating and cooling system,they have 140 drilled holes 400 feet deep to install all the piping for their state of the art HVAC system. Their utility bill will be less than the normal building that size at a very high up-front cost to all their customers.I cannot figure out why we need such a mansion in Young Harris just to service existing customers that have been serviced just fine out of the facility they are in now!! Also if they are an electric membership co operative why have they never returned their customers a rebate check?? Kinda like big government spending in my opinion, just raise the rates to sustain the spending they want. The mountain area they serve is in an economic depression for jobs and wages and they really don't seem to care. We need board members on the emc board that will question spending based on what we can afford without socking it to the customer!!

I understand you can vote on line now for board members. If that is true their is no reason we can't change board members.

I went to their website and found no link to who the board of directors are. Is that an indication of the Board of Directors' attitude toward its customers.

BREMC really needs to be reeled in, they are spending us into the poor house. Anyone really know what we can do? Is there a way to go to our Congressman for help? Why don't they ever pay the members a profit check?

I looked into that several months ago regarding the high rates. It looks like Georgia allows EMCs to set whatever rate they want to set. They don't have to get rate increases approved like Ga Power does. However, it seems that many EMCs give rebates. Also, could some of the EMCs that have higher rates also give rebates to customers?

Other than one, whose motives might be considered suspect, great information, right on point.

Thanks to all, not only for the information, but, also for suggesting potential solutions.

Again, this provides more evidence, for the need of a unified community watchdog.

Brings to mind the ole saying,“the inmates are running the asylum.”

It’s past time to stop sacrificing the messengers, and to start examining the evidence

Interesting article on pros and cons of more EMC oversight. Notice that the person saying EMCs are doing great has a vested interest in their not being much oversight.

From the numbers on the website at the following website

www.brmemc.com/PDFs/BR_4_AR_0911.pdf

it look like the number of meters from 2001 to 2011 increase about 36% while revenue during that time increased about 155%.

I not certain with regard to rate review and approval, however, I believe all public utilities fall under the purview of the Georgia Public Service Commission.

That regulatory agency, would probably be a starting point.

Most of these have been on the board forever. It is time to vote them out and get board members who will look out after the men who do the work at the EMC and the consumer. It is time to remove the politics and run it as a business.
