There was a Thread on this Forum a short time ago concerning "tipping". For an interesting Thread on this Subject check out the Bethlehem, PA Forum. There are two separate Threads on the issue.

1 I will check those threads out, however I can tell you now my opinion on mandatory tipping: A tip (also called a gratuity) is a VOLUNTARY payment. NOT mandatory. Those restaurants who automatically add gratuity to the bill should be looked into. |
||||
|
I have never heard of a tip being "legally required". How do they get away with mandatory tipping?
|
||||
Good question, you have to read the Threads. Oh Yeah, Bethlehem is only 10 miles from where I lived in PA. |

1 crazy! i read the story about the college kids getting arrested for refusing to pay gratuity because they said they got lousy service. i cant even belive the police answered that call and drove to the pub. im flabbergasted that the policemen didnt have enough sense to realize how ridiculous it is to arrest people for not tipping!! |
||||
I didn't read that story, but that is insane! I tip well when service is good, I tip lousy when service is bad. |

1 If you have a problem with service, the time to make a statement is during service, ask to speak with the manager, take care of the problem, don't be such whiney wimps and chump some one without giving them the chance to redeem themselves. Ever think they are reacting to YOUR behavior? Might what to give that some thought... |

1 Just for your information, the Courts have agreed that Mandatory Gratuity is a tip and is not legal. It is legal to add it to the bill but is illegal not to remove it upon request. |

I think it is sad that waitstaff get paid so little come on 2-4dollars an hour. It's crazy companies expect the guest to pay their wages. At the very least the should get min.wage with tips as extra. I have waited tables before I do not think tips should be mandatory. People should tip
according to service. |

1 maybe you should read the story. the pub admitted that they waited an "UNusally long time". they also had to get up twice to get their own drinks. and when they finally ordered drinks, they took forever to get there. said they saw the waitress very little. that does not deserve 18% gratuity, |

1 We live in a small town, word gets around, and just where do you think these people could eat out other than fast food? Don't get me wrong, I'm not in favor of the mandatory, but going through the manager is a much better option, that way they can get rid of the dead weight and you chould help to make that a better place to frequent. I can't imagine going through the expense of court or wasting their time for such a minor matter. |

Challenger99, I've never really done the math at the restuarant...do they take 18% of "your" total or 18% of the total bill and them split that out?
Sometimes they have a problem with multiple checks, with today's computers, I don't get that one. When it comes into the kitchen that's not an issue... Alot of lazy, ill trained personel. |

Nah John. My post appeared twice cause I hit the "post" twice. it should read....Oops. I hit the post button twice. my mistake. better? lol

That is one of the reasons they don't want to do separate bills. With separate bills they cannot even apply the "mandatory gratuity" to the bill since the number of orders on the bill is less than the minimum. One other reason the Court ruled the way they did is that some businesses do not allow tips as part of expense account meal cost since the amount is considered a personal decision.(Of course it usually gets "buried" some where on the expense account.) |

1 Personally, for good service I tip at least 20%, so they do themselves a disservice, if they're good of course. Do you know how the practice came about of tipping off the total amount of the bill? I do know that TIPS = To Insure Prompt Service |
