My mom, for the first time ever, decided that she wanted to shop for antiques. I had no idea where to take her besides Blue Ridge. People, people, people...we've got to come up with a plan or something to get out beautiful little town up to speed. Who do we talk to & how do we do it? I'm up for any suggestions & will do whatever the community wants to make this happen, unless the majority doesn't want it to. Walking around Blue Ridge today, I was very impressed at what they had in downtown. This is the first time in probably 15 years or so that I've actually went to their downtown area. They have all kinds of shops (antiques, adventure wear shops, bakeries, pubs,a train etc...) just all kinds of stuff. And people galore that looked like they were having such a good time with their family & pets. I just imagine the revenue the city is bringing in is doing great for the city & county. One shop owner told us today that Blue Ridge is expanding like no other & there are a lot of plans on the books for major businesses that are coming in. I just want this for blairsville, too. I know that we have what it takes to be that town in GA that everyone talks about & wants to visit. I don't want them stopping in Ellijay or Blue Ridge & not coming any farther because they don't feel the need to. Just my little thought for the day. I love my town!!!

Blue Ridge has been a shopper's paradise for a long time. Where have you been?

As long as the square is a state highway, it won't happen in Blairsville and WHO WANTS IT TO BE A TOURIST TRAP like Blue Ridge where no one can find parking, the streets are crowded all weekend and during the summer and fall it is a freakin' zoo.

I'd rather drive to Blue Ridge and shop then come back to quiet peaceful Blairsville. I won't go to Blue Ridge on a weekend there are too many people...people...people.

Try visiting Mercier's on a weekend.

I love my town, too, but wouldn't love it if it was full of people from out-of-town every weekend.

I know, why don't you move to Ellijay or Blue Ridge and you'll have everything at your fingertips.

When they move can they take the fools on the DDA and the city council and mayor with them?

You start with getting rid of the current mayor and commissioner.

The airport is not bring in business and the buildings the commissioner builds around it sit falling apart or empty.

Sounds like the only fools here are the last two that posted. I agree with you, original poster. And Blue Ridge has been a shoppers paradise?! Clearly you're the one that is nuts, unless you consider Roses to be the ultimate shoppers paradise. Blue Ridge just recently, in the last 5 years probably, has expanded their downtown area. Union county has decreased in population since the census before last. Probably because of smart aleck's like you two but mostly because of the lack of stuff to do & lack of jobs. A lot of union countians share your interest, I love my town. And I can tell you that talks have been made to see that this very thing happens.

I wouldn't say they're a joke, they just lack in a lot of areas that they don't have to. There is absolutely no advertisement (that I have seen) promoting Union County. A few weeks back, I had to make a trip to Atlanta and on the way down & back, I noticed billboards on I-75 that promoted "Georgia's Blue Ridge" & Fannin County. I told a relative about this & they say that there's all kinds of billboards close to the Ga/FL line about Fannin. And no offense, but in my opinion, Blairsville is a lot nicer than Blue Ridge. I guess our county gov't just could care less about the welfare of our county. Really sad.

Keep the crowds in Blue Ridge.
Blairsville is a lot nicer and let's keep it that way by not turning Union County into a tourist mecca. There is nothing Fannin has that I want here. Go there on a weekend!

I hate to burst your bubble Carrolton, GA, person, but 3/4s of the people employeed in those lovely shops are from somewhere else. The owners don't hire locals because those shops are owned by people who have moved to the area and are snobs. The owners are making money - the local residents of Fannin County aren't.

Now, I'm not putting down those "snobs" because many are friends of mine and I know how they think. It's all about profit.

I don't know exactly who you are referring to as Carrollton, GA but incase you haven't noticed by now, if you're not registered in topix, then any ol' location is by your name. & I hate to burst your bubble sweetie but yes, locals to work at the businesses in Blue Ridge. Don't know exactly where you've came up with that mess at. Blairsville is not a lot nicer than Blue Ridge, I think that's self evident. It's definitely not worse but it's definitely not a lot nicer either.

Union county needs tourism dollars or it will become a sad ghost town. You people that keep saying keep the shoppers out have no real idea what it costs to run a town and keep it prosperous.

I'm sorry guys but I didn't mean for this to turn into a bashing of another county or a who's better contest. I'm just thinking that we can learn a little bit from Blue Ridge because really the two counties are alike and they seem to be prospering a little more. Don't say that that county is not seeing any benefits from the tourism. Maybe you need an economic lesson. I just don't want Union to turn out like central Appalachia in KY & I mean that very seriously. I'm sure I'm a little bias but I think we live in one of the greatest places on earth & I want others to see that as well & I want to see my town/county prosper. If you don't, maybe you should move to central Appalachia. I'm not saying be like Atlanta by any means but we do need more. Oh and I spoke with numerous persons on my antique shopping trip in Blue Ridge & the majority of the workers were natives. Just wanted to clear that up.

Our city Govt. has been anti business for a long time.
They have tried everything they could to keep business out. The sign ordinance was just one of many ways they send business out into the county. As for as looking like downtown Blue Ridge it will never happen. Our streets or main through fares and will always be. Look at the great Street Scape. They came and tore up the streets and left and haven't been back. Blairsville has absolutely no leadership.

Oh I'm not saying looking like Blue Ridge at all. There's definitely not enough room. I remember as a kid, way before 515, the downtown area of Blue Ridge was their main fare, too. The 4 lane helped them though. I just knew once wal-mart came in that we were going to start getting a few better restaurant chains & some shops. Didn't happen. And I was so upset to learn that chick-fil-a backed out. Who knows, I'm sure it'll happen one day. Guess we just need to be patient.

The sign ordinance is so our town doesn't look like Murphy NC with all the billboards and dinky signs here and there.
The downtown work isn't finished, dummy.

I think you need a lesson in economics and possibly just an education based on the way you write. More? Another drive-thru fast food chicken place. Come on. Get real. What part of people don't want to live in a tourist trap don't you understand?
I suspect you've not been to Harvest on Main, Cucina Rustica, Blue Ridge Brewery, Out of the Blue, Whapsody in Blue, and many of the other classy stores and restaurants on Main. You won't find locals working the floor.

This is not a English class. It's topix and the last time I checked, we're not being graded. You wouldn't like for me to pick out all of your mistakes. Move on winner. You must be from Blue Ridge. If not, you're a hypocrit. On minute you talk about not going to Blue Ridge, then the next minute, you name numerous businesses on main. What did you say, get real? Get real sweetheart. I know better than to believe anything you're saying because I know people personally that work at Harvest on Main, LL Beanery. Get real like you said. The mess that you spew, you know nothing about. Like I said, move on.

Plenty of room downtown to expand.
City just needs leadership that's not looking to see how much they can line their pockets with.
Know people who wanted to open businesses in the area went elsewhere after trying to deal with local government.

I guess For Sale and For Rent signs are beautiful. I think even us idiots realize that the work isn't finished but how about a smart ass such as yourself telling us why they tore up the streets and then left. Us idiots would have waited until we were ready to finish the job before starting. The sign ordinance was to collect another $100 bucks from every business in town. The mayor of Blairsville makes at least 4 times what Mayors in comparable cities in the state of Ga. earn. Do you really think that fool is worth that much?
