Jim Conley remains the mayor of Blairsville with 62 votes compared to Tom Payton's 21 votes.
It seems to me this is a strong statement that the fine people of Blairsville recognize the positive impact Jim Conley has had during his tenure in office and wish him to continue. It's also a validation of the Downtown Development Authority and its efforts to beautify downtown and impact its businesses positively.
The city council and Mayor accounted for 15 votes, Favors done just before election time accounted for another 13 votes, The rental King voted 6 votes and ex members of the little group threw in another 5. That totals 39 votes. 62 less the 39 equal 23 which means Payton came pretty close. The city govt. is very similar to the county. It would seem that the only way to remove them is through Law Suits or by bring light to it. You did well Tom Payton. Better luck next time.

As of June 1, 2013, the City of Blairsville had 189 registered voters. That means 44% of registered voters showed up in an off election year to vote on who the next mayor would be, which is a far higher rate than the county voters as a whole.
Well done, Mr. Conley. Well done, people of Blairsville.
The city election is always an off year and an off election. No One pays any attention to it and that's a shame.

Thank you Tom Payton:

For having the courage to challenge "the powers that be" - "the machine" - the "Mountain Mafia" or any other name you wish to apply to those "power brokers" who control our community with their diminishing iron fist.

You have nothing to be ashamed of; you exhibited a genuine desire to serve, in an honest, honorable, efficient, and responsive manner. What more could a small town such as ours have wanted?

Sure we all knew your political inexperience would be a liability, as did you, but you stepped up anyway when others would not. And you did well; getting 1/3 of the vote for a first timer going up against what you tackled is excellent. And reminds everyone that merit, ideas, and creditably, really isn’t what elections are about anymore.

No, it’s simple big money, absolute power, and those wishing to maintain it, by propping up their hand picked puppets for as long as they possibly can.

But times, and things are a changing, hard working folks are slowly awaking, and as they become more aware, many are getting better at identifying those who are using them and deceiving them for their own selfish personal agendas.

And as these newly awaken voters are beginning to think, enough is enough, they are becoming angry, and finally starting to participate by going to the polls, where we are finding a new, and large group of allies.

Not to speak is to speak. Not to stand is to stand.

You both stood and you spoke.

Thanks again for your effort.

I hate to say this - but this vote was pretty much the most embarrassing thing I have ever seen. Not the win / loss aspect. But the turnout.

This is the norm for the city. Most residents just want to stay out of the limelight. If you want to do some investigating this is a perfect place to start. They like Lamar make up their own rules. When you make up your own rules you tend to forget about the real rules.

Thanks... am putting together the outline for a much larger edition. More pages, Color inserts, Advertising, Much Larger Distribution. As I have said, this 1st Edition was slapped together as a test run - mostly just to get me off the fence and do something - anything - sort of break the ice of years of procrastination on my part.

But anyone with SPECIFIC ideas that might make a good story, or deserve public exploration / education regarding how things work is welcome to throw it out there.

My guess is that the "Victory Celebration" on this recent vote is going to be rather short lived. Like Lamar, Conley is now also chained to his fate. Plenty of time to drive pubic investigations. I think what some people fail to see - is that when leadership changes, it is an excuse to derail investigations, stop progress in actually cleaning things up. It gets swept under the rug of "oh, but that was the previous adminsitration - we need to move forward now." But then things proceed as usual, with the same people behind hte scenes pulling the strings. This way we have the same players - same issues. It brings Clarity of focus.

And regarding Splost - now all eyeballs are going to be on the setup of these advance loans Lamar will most assuredly work on. We put too much out there. People are more aware now.

A good start was made. But I'm going to do my "fade away" thing now for a bit. Time to let the Norm's and FF-LAWs do their post-show mascot dance routine. Even clowns deserve their 15 minutes.

But you know me. I'll be back :)

Peace,
- david
