LAMAR PARIS answered the following question.....
http://www.nganews.com/pdf/ngn07-03-13OpEd1.p...
“DOES UNION COUNTY OPERATE THE COUNTY AMBULANCE SERVICE?”
ANSWER:.“No. The ambulance service is owned and operated by Union General Hospital. While the county contributes $500,000 each year to this operation, we do not have any operational control or input. So if you have any compliments or concerns about the ambulance service, you would need to contact Union General Hospital.”
And if Union General Hospital is a “not-for-profit” hosptial, and is exempt from even paying property taxes, why are WE-THE TAXPAYERS paying Union General Hospital $500,000 each year ?
And does this $500,000 each year INCLUDE the county tags and insurance that are on:
1) ambulances
2) hospital security vehicles
3) hospital administrators vehicles
4) Nursing Home activity van
5) work vehicle w/tommy-gate that appears to be transporting hospital laundry
6) NET vans at both Chatuge & Union
Futhermore, these NET vans or Non-Emergency Transportation vans which provide transportation through the broker Southeast Trans Inc. for medicaid patients under the Georgia Department of Community Health Dept. bill medicaid and are reimbursed for the transportation.
The vehicles are owned and operated by Union General Hospital and driven by Union General Hospital employees. So why do they fill up with gasoline at the County barn??????????
Is there an accounting of the amount of gasoline used by Union General Vehicles? There are also these NET vans parked at Chatuge Hospital in TOWNS COUNTY and driven by Chatuge Hospital Employees.

These are questions we should put to our Commissioner Lamar Paris, or to the Hospital
board members of which you will notice, Commissioner Lamar Paris’ wife Dinah appears to be listed as a board member.
https://bulk.resource.org/irs.gov/eo/2013_04_...
Board Members listed on Page#8 of above document.
It looks like the same people on the board of the hospital are on the hospital authority board. That, I think, requires the hospital's board to have open meetings.

Anyone hear about the laying off at union general?
I've heard they Union General was trying to control costs. After what some say are inflated prices the hospital authority board and the hospital corporation (both have the same board members) have paid for property near the hospital, maybe recouping their expenses was necessary. However, it seems with the creation of additional higher level jobs in the hospital that not a lot of overall cost cutting has happened.

I have heard of some investigation about the new VA and the past administrator. The mess at the Atlanta VA is causing some heads to roll.

I probably did, and I apologize.

It's a fine hospital and my family and I are thankful that it's here.

Hopefully, the budget issues will be resolved and the great staff can continue their work on Blairsville and Union County's behalf.

I heard AHH was bought by Union General. Wonder what Union General paid? Who's doing the laundry? It looks like Union General should be having open meetings and meetings be advertised in the legal organ.

What Government Bodies Are Covered?

The Georgia Open Meetings Act covers the meetings of "the governing body of an agency" and committees created by its members. The term “agency” includes the following:

Every county, municipal corporation, school district and other political subdivision;
Every department, agency, board, bureau, commission, authority and similar body of each county, municipal corporation or other political subdivision of the state;
Every city, county, regional or other authority established pursuant to state law; and;
Non-profit organizations that receive more than one-third of their funds from a direct allocation of state funds from the governing authority of an agency.

Some examples of "governing bodies of agencies" covered by the Open Meetings Act include state boards and commissions (such as the State Board of Medical Examiners and the Soil and Water Conservation Commission), county commissions, regional development authorities, school boards, library boards, hospital authorities, planning commissions, zoning boards, boards of trustees of public universities, and non-profit corporations operating public hospitals. For additional details on government bodies covered by the Open Meetings Act, see the Open Government Guide: Georgia.

Laying off or firing?
Or leaving? Maybe the hospital authority board members should be more involved in what's happening and be getting feedback from a wider group of people about the impact of the changes transpiring at the hospital and nursing home.

If a new administrator isn't named soon you will see the State get involved. I would imagine that everyone in Atlanta is getting tired of hearing about Union County. If they get tired enough then they will clean it up.

Doubt it... our state govt. is STILL over budget and stressed to the max with cuts already made. It would take deaths and a ton of bad publicity to get the "state" involved in anything to do with UC.

No, UGH has not bought, nor does it have any affiliation with Appalachian Home Health Care. AHHC was, & still is, owned by the Gowder family, but is in no way connected with the hospital. You people really should get at least a few facts before you post.
