If you have Windstream high-speed Internet you need to read this. The last several months my computer has begin to slow down especially during the hours of 3 PM to 11 PM which are the high peak usage times. During those times my computer is running as slow is back in the old days when we had dial up. This also affected my wife's iPad, watching movies on Netflix. I called the Windstream helpdesk at 1-888-292-3827. The young lady had me do a check of my download and upload speed by going to speedtest.net . The test showed that my download speed was 1.31 megabytes per second megabytes. She then told me that the area where I live receives 1.5 MB per second and that the 1.31 was a general slowdown in the area that they were working on. When I told her that I was paying a higher rate for 3. megabytes, she told me my area was not wired for the higher rate. She checked my billing records and she found that I had been paying a higher rate since 2009. I'm still waiting for someone from the company to call me back and explain why this happened. I sent them an email and said I would like my money back for the difference and of course I haven't heard anything, and they will not even answer my emails. So you need to check if your paying he higher rate and check your computer and see how fast it is downloading.

Thank you for the information Steve. I am having the exact same problem and have called several times to be told "they are working in your area" (this has been over a several month time period).

Calling and complaining does no good. I get .35 to 1.55. Crazy! When I complained last week and said that I was paying for high speed internet and wanted a refund they said No, even though I pay for high speed internet it is the same price as what everyone pays. They also told me they were working on it. How many years are they going to be working on it. Is this something we can complain to the FCC?

It would probably be better to file a complaint with the state licensing board. The FCC doesn't give a damn.

I too have trouble with them on most evenings from 6-11 pm. Very slow connection and sometimes the modem disconnects and reboots.

I believe the state public service commission handles these matters. Perhaps we should call them when they are open during the day
Enough calls will gain some notoriety and we may not be the only ones experiencing this.

If you are using the Speakeasy test there is a problem with their server.

the others I use give me around an average of 2.36 mbps on the download with my 3.0 I pay Windstream to provide.

If you happen to call Windstream and complain about paying for HIGHSPEED Internet and want a refund, see if they tell you the same thing that everyone pays one set fee so there is no refund to get.

Does anyone know if there is another provider in this area for internet service?

Also interested in knowing what the internet provider options are in the Choestoe area - is Windstream the only provider? I guess there is always satellite but it also has a poor rep.

Only choices in most parts of Union county are Windstream, Blue Ridge EMC and Comcast.
Other choices are Satellite and Cell phone tower connection, both are slower than land line connection.

Fiber is available in many areas from both BRMEMC and Windstream, course it's twice the cost.

I forgot to add that the last time I called Windstream about this problem they agreed to reduce my bill (I think they took $12 off). Maybe if enough people request a rate reduction they will be more proactive in solving this.

They gave me a discount when they cut off my service because they did not have enough lines. But they won't give a discount for the slowness of the high speed internet. Like I said in the above post the person at windstream said we are all paying the same price, it does matter if it is high speed or slow speed. Can anyone confirm that. I pay 69.99 a month plus the other taxes.

Just look at my bill again. I had lookd at the back of the bill where it said highspeed internet. My total bill for 3m price for Life BUNDLE Package of phone and Internet and all the great fees attached is $77.79 Me the BUNDLE PACKAGE is not so great after all.

Windstream reduces the bandwidth when heavy usage occurs. Reduction of the bandwidth slows down the speed.
The problem is Windstream needs to upgrade their bandwidth capability for their equipment.

Cell phone companies do the same thing, promise fast and high speed connection without having equipment in place to support what they promise. They sell you a 3g phone and it doesn't work well for you, they say buy a new 4g phone and it works a little better. People still on the 3g phones service is degraded as more and more upgrade to 4g which in turns degrades as more people upgrade.

They are like government, promise a lot and deliver a little.
