Windstream sets to silence internet speed woes
By Martin Dotson Staff

ATLANTA, GA - Internet speed woes from Windstream customers will soon be a thing of the past in parts of Northeast Georgia, according to statements from company officials.

CBS-Atlanta reported Windstream Communications is committed to solving its internet speed problems, looking to spend $14 million in 2013 to upgrade its broadband network in Georgia.

Bettye Willis, Regional Vice-President of the Arkansas based company, told teh TV station that Windstream's investment will improve service to customers in two-thirds of the communities it serves. She pointed out, however, that not every customer in each community will see upgrades.

"We're asking our customers to be patient with us because we're on it. We understand that they have issues and we're working to upgrade their network," said Willis.

A recent study by the Federal Communications Commission found Windstream was the worst in providing advertised broadband speeds, only doing so 81 percent of the time.

The company has been plagued with complaints of slow internet speeds for years, and according to the Governor's Office of Communications, there is an open investigation into Windstream for possible consumer law violations.

Willis suggested customers who believe they're not getting the service they're paying for should contact the company for a possible discount.

OK-this may take a bit of patience (I got cut off twice) and I know it does not help increase the internet speed but....call Windstream and ask for the Loyalty Department (especially set up for this problem). They gave me a $10/month phone discount as well as a $10/month internet discount for the next 12 months. This lets me know that the problem will not be fixed anytime soon.

Why aren't we allowed to use other services. I realize there are no other companies around here to select from. Is this a FTC type rule? Why does Windstream have such a monopoly on phone services in this area?

Because Windstream is the company that built the phone system in north georgia and elsewhere. They installed the land lines and own them. The FTC is the regulator and only enters into the situation when competition becomes available.
Everyone with land line phone service had no choice but to use Windstream back before cable, fiber, and satelite offerings became available.

Example--Cable tv companies are now allowed to offer phone services as well as internet services. Satelite tv also offers same services as does anyone with fiber run to their home.

Interesting, I thought I read somewhere that AT&T had to provide the fibers but aren't allowed to provide the services and that they actually have to sell their services to Windstream and other phone companies throughout the nation at a significantly reduced price due to the FTC regulations. This way it prevents AT&T from having a monopoly and giving other companies fair competition. Sounds a little confusing to me. I would at least like a choice of providers. Thanks for the info.
