If one believes there should be a leash law, you should have NOT moved to the country. This is a rural area. Leave it to ACOG.

The county doesn't support private charities. People already bitch because our tax dollars support animal control and the shelter.

Why doesn't the county supply tax dollars to the Christian Schools in the area?

The Boy Scouts?

The person who started this has no concept of charities compared to the humane society that is serving the public.

Lamar approves funds allocated to the humane society. He doesn't allocate funds to a private organization nor should the county pay for it. The humane society submits a yearly budget to the counties.

Furthermore, if people would like more from animal control, I suggest we have several units to cover the county. One officer is obviously not adequate because of all the bitching I see here.

The officer works 40 hours a week, not 24/7.
Call 911 if you have animal emergency.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't in this county.

It is time to have some animal control in our county. Not only is it dangerous for the residents to be subjected to possible rabies infected animals but their pets can also be infected. If a stray dog comes into your yard you have no one to call. The Sheriff's office will not return calls. The Humane society will not take them unless you pay a large fee. Your only option is to not feed them and hope they will leave or a bullet between their eyes and you have to bury them. Now since a bullet is much cheaper than the Humane society that is the most widely used method of removing the problem. We need a animal control ordinance and a person to call and assume the responsibility for these strays.
Hire more animal control officers. Paul is already spread thin in the area. He doesn't work 24/7 nor should he.

What you are complaining about costs your precious tax dollars that you'd rather spend on people.

Um. The mountain shelter IS ABSOLUTELY a private organization. Perhaps you should get some facts straight.

Living in a rural area has nothing to do with having people take the responsibility of their pets. If you want and have a pet keep it home. If pet owners did take care of their pets we wouldn't need shelters for all these unwanted pets.

I didn't move here. I was raised here. I get tired of people who walk their dog over on someone Else's property to take a crap rather than let them on their own. We need laws now that so many people have moved here who have no respect for others. The Humane Society is a private organization. If you don't think so go check the deed records and see how much property they own. We don't need more animal control officers just for the one we have to return calls and take calls as they come in. You can leave a message and he never returns it. Course I guess he takes that after the rest of the bunch up there. We pay for the Horse arena which is a private club so don't give me lip about how Lamar doesn't support private organizations.

I half agree with you. There should be no leash law on private property. But if your dog goes on someone elses property and causes damage you should be held responsible. The only place the leash law should be fully enforced is at the dog trail. Idiots who can't read the sign let their mutts run loose over there and cause a nuisance to other dog owners. The county could have an officer spend a day over there and give a $100 citation to people who break the rules and the county government would be flush with money in no time.

MSHS is a private organization, funded by Towns and Union Counties........so why is CCPR not given the same consideration of tax dollars to help with the shelter since so many of the animals MSHS rejects ends up going into CCPR......
and we do need more animal control laws and people that dump their animals should be held accountable, just like a speeding ticket or DUI or child abuse......also, Paul at Animal Control is doing the best he can considering he is the only A/C office in Union County.....try walking in his shoes

That place is a joke! Ever seen a stray dog on the side of the road, in fear of it getting ran over, no owner around, no tags? Looks like a good dog, healthy, someones pet that escaped? DONT call them, you have to make a apt to drop off an animal.. Why do we not have animal control? OH we do, UCSO Animal Control will come out and take your dog away and leave a fine on your door if they get a report of you neglecting your dog, but cant pick a stray up!!!!

I'm going to suggest to Rich and Mason that another animal control officer or two be added to the Sheriff Department. That's a good idea. I'll get back to you with their response.

Union County is a big area. It seems the answer here is a couple more AC officers and vehicles. One man can't get it all done in eight hours.

Another dog catcher isn't needed. Throwing our money away to the Humane Society is what is need to be stoped. If they aren't going to take stray animals then give the money to so one who will or build our own kennel. We have already thrown away a pile of SPLOST money on land not worth two cents because of the Humane Society.

On a serious note, what is a person to do when they have strays that will not leave their property? I am currently having this issue. I have no idea who to call or what to do. About a week ago, 2 stray mutts showed up at my home and are bullying the dog we already have, and she is on a leash. She is a husky, so she's bigger than they are but she's gentle and will not fight with them. They are taking her food from her bowl and ive even seen them try to get it straight from her mouth. So please, tell me what I'm supposed to do with these strays. I'm open to any suggestions anyone may have to get them off my property.

Shoot then in the butt with a bb gun. If that does not work then use a 22.

I have never had a problem with anything staying in my yard that I did not want there.

But I have had a problem with neighbors feeding and taking my dog inside to sit on couch and watch TV. Then calling me because my dog would not leave.

Yeah, my neighbors are that stupid. Not animal lovers or big heart ed , just stupid.
