Blairsville is a good place to live if you are white, male and Baptist.

Basic lowdown from someone who has lived here a while, but elsewhere too so I have some perspective.

Schools. Ok I suppose. Until the last few years hiring was completely for locals only, so not always quality teachers. And always run by football coaches. Needless to say community values are not big on intellectualism and arts. It is changing slowly as "outsiders" move in but still many problems here.

Community is strong and family focused. Almost everyone here who chooses to be part of the community knows each other or or is one degree removed. It is a great place like that. Friendly people. You seldom have to wait for help if your car breaks down and it is nice to know many people like waitresses, people next to you in line and other folks you interact with on a first name basis.

Social. Well, kind of an odd place. Very provincial. Some old farm families who wield much of the local power and are kind of worshiped by the local poor folk. Mainly because they control most of the jobs. The move in types could care less about either of these camps of people and their old social structure. But it is still very alive here. Makes jobs very hard to get for someone not local and really hurts the community. This is changing too as many of these families have lost wealth and political power since the newcomers neither need them or vote for them.
Blairsville is the "nice" community in the area. Blue Ridge and Hiawassee have fancier downtown areas, but the actual population in Blairsville is on average a bit more refined. In other words less white trash here than the other towns and thus less of those social problems. Plenty of drugs and problems that come with white poverty though, but really mostly out of the picture if that is not the world you inhabit.

Quality of life is pretty good. Good healthcare considering how far we are from a major hospital. Blairsville has kind of become the center for rural medical care in this area so we have many specialists and facilities for a small town. No real shopping and not great restaurants, but enough decent ones to get by on.

Blairsville can get pretty boring if you are used to going out for entertainment. It has fewer social problems than most areas. The big ones being meth and out of wedlock babies and the poverty that goes with it. But if you raise your kids right that stuff is pretty much out of sight and out of mind. Also a huge lack of opportunities for decent employment. What we do have is for the most part very friendly population, rather close knit community if you decide to become part of it, great mountain beauty and low cost of living. Though the dark side to the low cost of living is that pay is even lower. It is a nice place to live overall if remote, small town living is your thing. Come to think of it, can't think of a much better place to live for that kind of lifestyle.
Multicultural? That is funny. Sure there is racism here. But who cares as everyone is white. Those few that are not get along just fine..popular is school and so on. People here are simple. If you are nice and make the effort they will like and accept you. I can't say that for other places I have lived.
You will see some stupidity on here. It is not what real life is like here. We have a few obnoxious move ins from FL and some real ignorant locals. Both are bitter and marginalized here and like to come to these boars to vent.

theskinny, that is probably the best characterization and temperature taking of this community that I have ever seen and I have been here a long time.
