By the way, have you ever stood by one of those local farmers that you think can't make a living from the local traffic at the market and counted the dollars they take? Have you ever counted how many truck loads of corn are sold out of that market in one single day? Have you ever picked in the field until after dark and gotten yourself up at 4AM to finish loading your truck in order to arrive and set up at the market in time for the 8AM customer? Until you try it, don't knock it.
Hey Local Farmer... don't "take the bait" from the "overtaxed" poster- just ignore know-it-all pompous fools. Most feel the way Mavis and Mountaingirl do... and we appreciate you being there.

Also... for the most part, UC farmers are all accommodated with spaces prior to allocation of spaces to the majority of crafters. Everybody wins... including the buyers. It is built... THAT ship has already sailed, so appreciate the positive and support it.

Most any stupid idea will stay afloat as long as you pump money into it from another source.
I don't call any family farm a success that takes my property tax and SLOST tax to make it work.
It is a flea market. And the COC family farm with about 5 acres and a thrown up green house one that is being pushed will not survive. It will take their retirement money to stay active. Notice I never mentioned successful or profit. They are playing and BS ing.
And the county and COC can promote all they want.
And they are doing it with our tax money. Same can be said for the canning plant. It's BS fueled on tax money.
This same kind of management practices is being demonstrated at the Blue Ridge Mountain EMC.

As Mavis has pointed out, attendance at the market is not mandatory.
But paying needless taxes for such things IS mandatory!!!

Don't go to the market if you don't like it, stay way, they have plenty of customers without you. No need to trash the farmers just stay away.

no one is trashing the farmers or the market. what people are upset about is the over a million dollars spent on it and still spending. that million could buy a lot of veggies
have you ever seen a million dollar home? it sure does not look like our pole barns

Money invested in the Blairsville farmers market brings in a lot of traffic and dollars from outside Union County that otherwise would be spent elsewhere. Just check out the car tags in the parking lot, assuming you can find a parking spot, especially on Saturday mornings. These outsiders not only spend their money at the farmers market, but other local retailers as well.

It will take a long time to pay $1 1/2 million dollars for this glorified flea market.

Those out of town tags are from people who have second homes here and if you count $3 from each car you still don't have enough to pay the help.

You don't really want that. It would be Paris. He would hug you while he's tugging at your wallet.

Those from outside the county are already in the county so it doesn't increase tourism. Think people drive from Atlanta just to come to the flea market? WOW!!!

Wrong, again, rubbernecks.
People from Murphy, Hayesville, Hiawassee, Young Harris, and other towns attend the market.
Yes, people coming up to the area to go to Mercier's and Blue Ridge have heard about the market and they attend the market. Many of the vendors are known all over the state for their pottery or art work. I've had friends from ATL pick up their pottery order at the market and they love the place.
What a bunch of piss-moaners. My friends who rent a weekend or vacation home for the week love the market. Those people are from all over TN, GA, and NC.

1000-2000 people attending isn't proof enough for y'all?

Thursday and Friday people sell items at the market, too.
The cannery is ALWAYS busy.
Tuesday night has a big turnout.

Our tax dollars were put to good use.

Why can't the Farmers Market pay for itself in fees? It not only cost a lot of money to build, it costs to operate it too. This is not Capitalism but more like Socialism. A government run market that is subsidized by taxpayers. Are we coming Socialism here too.

The taxpayers in Union County get to pay for the golfers to play golf,
People to shoot their BB Guns
People to Play cowboys
Batting Cages
cabin rental business
You name it we get to pay for it.
Darn right your taxes have to be raised.
We have to pay to maintain the buildings and pay the utilities.

Well said Mavis. This is a democratic society and democracy rules. The few people who don't like it or just complain all the time or are just ignorant can vote at the next election . Just remember there a a lot more people who support and appreciate the Farmers Market than oppose it.
The majority is never right. Never, I tell you! That's one of these lies in society that no free and intelligent man can help rebelling against. Who are the people that make up the biggest proportion of the population -- the intelligent ones or the fools? I think we can agree it's the fools, no matter where you go in this world, it's the fools that form the overwhelming majority.

You know it, homey ! More than half your neighbors in Union County ( I love that name !)
are hooked up on taxpayer-funded government goodies, and I'm not referring to social security retirement benefits. I'm talking welfare, unemployment, food stamps, government disability, WIC ; all bought and paid for by the saps still in the work force.

When we take back congress this November I've got some groovy new programs I'm going to cram down your throats, just like we did with the "Affordable" Care Act.

Back to the golf course ...

This is a negative thread and against the better interests of Union County and its citizens as determined by the Conservative Business Alliance and the Chamber of Commerce. It is an infringement on my rights and those who care about Union County. Very soon thanks to my state representative such posts and gatherings will be forbidden by law unless approved by the proper authorities
