I live in Virginia and have also seen hay prices rise. There are several different ways horse owners can still find affordable hay. Lets not forget that droughts have happened before, and they will happen again. Responsible horse owners will not panic and abandon their horses, nor will they let them starve. Irresponsible owners will merely use the price of hay as an excuse for neglecting their animals.
The hay market is a supply and demand business, just like every other business in the U.S. Many hay producers still have plenty of hay, they have just chosen to not sell any more in 2007. Primarily because they do not want to show any more income for the 2007 tax year. since most of them got more money per bale this year, they made more . Once we get into January of 2008, hay should come down in price as there may actually be a glut from the producers who have been hording their supplies.
The best hay deals are at the hay auctions. There are several in Virginia, you can google them. Even if you are a small horse owner, getting together with several of your friends and buying in bulk will save you money. Hay auctions sell by the ton, not by the bale, and so you get a much better deal. I recently bought alfalfa hay for $275.00 a ton. I got together with a large horse farm and was able to buy nine tons from a 21 ton hay auction purchase. Last year, I paid $250.00 a ton for alfalfa and so I do not feel a $25.00 increase per ton was all that bad. If I had bought the same hay by the bale, I would have paid twice the price I paid by buying by the ton. I also had the option of selling some of the hay to my neighbors, if I had not been able to afford the entire nine tons. I am also feeding hay cubes as a supplement to hay forage. I have found no shortage of those. Maybe the best thing that can come out of the present hay situation is that horse owners will join together and form their own little co-ops. Pool their money and find the hay they need until the crisis is over. I also see no reason why anyone who sends their horses to rescues, cannot at least send some money every month for their horses upkeep. Surely $25.00 a week would be a reasonable amount, that is about $3.50 a day.

HPT Native, they are just baiting you. Ignore the ignorant! Have you thought about approaching the manager/owner of the stable you keep your horse?(Now I've made an assumption that you don't keep him/her on your property). That owner may be able to get with other stable owners and go to a hay auction for a reduced price that they could pass on to you. Just a thought.

Times are tough for everybody. I recently had to trade in my SUV for a mini-van. Have you considered riding a more economical animal like maybe a llama or an ostridge.

Oh, I see. Well that's good. If my wife would get a better job maybe I could afford hay and get a horse too.
indeed- horses are pretty sweet- you could ride one to work- although you may be late alot if you don't start waking up earlier.
