Hey there TJ in atl: I have lived in Blackstone most of my life, except for a few years in the late '60's when I was in college and then working in Richmond. Got any more questions about your Blackstone friends or happy memories of Blackstone that you would like to share, I would love to hear from you.
Let's keep this blog a positive one; happy memories of good times and good friends. This is Arts & Crafts Festival weekend in Blackstone and lots of folks come home for the weekend. I might just run in to some of your old friends. By the way, if you are on FaceBook sign up as a friend of Courier Record newspaper and keep up with some of the things that are going on in our community. And if you went to Blackstone High School, join the Blackstone High School Alumni Association FB page or if you went to Kenston Forest, they have a FB page, too. |

My best memories of Blackstone was about the stockyard. My daddy got a wonderful Collie that we named Johnny from there. Excellent dog. I know that the road was kept pretty hot with the traffic from the trucks hauling tobacco to the warehouses.

This is better here. If you remember Browns- Don and Elaine- Elaine was my older cousin. I spent a lot of my summers there with them.

Yes, I remember Don and Elaine quite well. Although my parents were older and I was younger, we were neighbors and close friends with Ron and Marlene Hunnings and met Don and Elaine through them. As I recall, Don and Ron worked together. What happened after they left Blackstone. Did one of them die quite young or did they get a divorce. I just have a recollection that something negative happened but I don't recall what. They were good folks and I was very fond of them.
Now I understand why you knew the Sheffields and the Williamses - because Don and Elaine were their neighbors. |

Yes, at first they lived next door to Shorty then moved over to 8th st. They did get divorced Don was in Fredricksburg and passed away about 7 or 8 yrs ago. Elaine is in Charlottesville. Her daughter Melonie is in Virginia Beach, and her son Jeff is in Florida.

I remember an Anne that lived up the street from Mac Williams that was friends with Elaine too. Can't remember her last name though. Seems to me it was Hobbs or Hobgood somthing similar to that.

I guess that would be Ann Hobgood whose parents lived on Lunenburg Avenue. Ann is a nurse; married and divorced a Kenbridge boy. She lives in Blackstone. Has two grown sons, one of whom lives in this area and the other is an actor who lives in California. I think he has done some commercials and bit parts in movies and tv programs.

As more things come back to me I'll let you know. If you ever see Ray Sheffield around, I'm sure he would remember me. His sister Bev would take us or pick up up from fishing local farm ponds. Other than at Mac's where we rode our bikes down there. If you see Ray ask him about the time we found a copperhead on 10th st going down to Mac's pond- I know he would remember that.
