I was very moved by the editor's article in the Alma Times and I believe that the city should retire John Murray's call sign 102 and I would like to ask all that feel the same way to attend the next city council meeting in a couple weeks and show them how much he meant to this town and show our support in the request of retiring his number. Nothing against the new guy. I'm sure he will do his job just fine but nobody will ever replace Big John! You are missed by many big man!

Am I the only person who finds it strange and somewhat hypocritical that The Alma Times is leading the charge to retire this man's call sign. The Alma Times was instrumental in bringing this sorry episode in Alma's history to it's sad conclusion. The call sign shouldn't be retired. That sort of thing is reserved to honor people for outstanding and meritorious service in the performance of their duties. This man was under a heavy cloud of suspicion and took the coward's way out. It is sad for the family and friends but the truth is he is not deserving of this honor. He was not struck down in the line of duty. To bestow this honor on him would cheapen others who died doing their duties and deserve this type of honor. The yellow journalism of the Alma Times was instrumental in getting this ball rolling that ended so trajically. Trying to start a groundswell of support for this is just the Times' way of trying to whitewash their own negliglent culpability. It is a disgusting display of The Times trying to cover their own behinds in case anyone tries to hold them accountable for the despicable manner they handled this whole affair. They were stirring rumors and innuendo to sell a few papers. SHAME ON THE ALMA TIMES
Facts please

The guy who caused all that trouble was FIRED and Carol Lee, someone who gives a damn about this community is back and is repairing the damage that dumb ass did. She is very good friends with john's wife and got her permission to do the story.

So, are you saying Terry Thomas was undeserving as well? His number was retired. Also, John was CLEARED of any wrong doing. Why don't you get off Topix long enough to request final reports form local agencies instead of spouting off crap you know nothing about?

The Alma Times has a new editor and she and John had a good working relationship. She thought very highly of him. As for John he did not take the coward's way out. He was cleared of all the accusations against him. Contact the local GBI office if you need proof of that. There was much more that led up to his death to include medical reasons. How can you say he was not outstanding and meritorious in the line of duty. He is the most decorated officer the APD has ever had. He was recently officer of the year and won that award numerous times. He received many ho.ors both on the local and state level. He was dedicated to keeping the streets of Alma as drug free as possible. He put his life on the line many times to protect the officers he supervised and the citizens of Alma. He may have not died in the line of duty but put his life on the line enough for this town. Many people brought down his name the weeks before his death but the man was proven innocent. Help us give the man the honor he deserved and retire his call sign.

Big John was not stuck up in any way at all! And what you should be doing is going down to the wonderful chiefs office and asking why he didn't get the ball rolling a little quicker on the investigation of John! Yeah our new chief is such friendly guy isn't he? And seems to be so good at his job? What about the high school girl that was killed a couple of years ago. Anybody heard anything on that? But his officers are steady pulling people over and when they do you have the entire police department behind respond!

I am really tired of all.the bullshit I read about my husband. He is gone but I know more about the weeks, months, even years leading up to his death. Yes, he shot himself and no he was not a corrupt cop. He would investigate anything no matter who you were. Don't believe me ask his middle daughter who was arrested by her own father for marijuana and got put on probation while living in his home.
I appreciate those who knew the true man. This has torn our family in pieces. Those who knew him and loved him know the truth, they know who he was. A kind, caring man, father, brother, and husband.
Don't take my word for it. Ask those that served with him. Many are scattered all the way from north GA to brantley county. Ask the kids he coached in little league baseball, ask the men he served with in the army, ask his sons and daughters. Ask officers from the surrounding counties what they thought ;about him.

Ask the Bacon county deputies, GBI, and even the district attorney for the area
I now he had enemies. I know he pissed people off. I also know what he through for doing his job. I know the nights and days he went to work sick or in pain. When he was called he responded. So retire 102 he forever 10-7, 10-42. I hope he can rest in peace.
Agreed

Bev, I'm sorry that you have to hear some inconsiderate slime CONTINUE to disrespect your husband, even after you've laid him to rest. I know you're glad Carol is back. As for Concerned Citizen, let me tell you this: Carol my friend and was more upset than you know at how her former paper handled John's suspension. She told me personally she would have still reported the suspension, but with more tact and consideration rather than just convicting him in the paper. I know for a fact she stayed in bed and cried the whole day after he passed away. It wasn't just her...Our law enforcement officers found it equally as difficult to deal with. Can you imagine how much harder it was on his family, and here you are, bashing the man AGAIN publicly?Yellow journalism? No, not anymore, not now that she is back. Wanna talk about corrupt? John was a good man who was tired of the good ol boy system. If you wanna talk about corrupt, why don't you look closer at the ones we're asking to retire his number? If the city honors the request, then it will be a step to mending a hurt. If they don't, it will mean John's family will lose whatever intention they ever had of eventually forgiving those who were so quick to forget his service.

John was fair and would bend over backwards for you if you were straight with him. We lost one of the good guys on the Alma department . And that's just sad. His number should be retired and i guarantee john new who killed that girl. He just didn't have the resources to prove it. But you watch now that he is gone that case will never be solved . I think you need to start at the top of our police department and work your way down cleaning house.

I'm sure he had the info but the GBI agent that was working the case has taken the torch. If left up to the local pd alot he was working on won't be solved. It's bad when an out of state agency calls to get information and gets told if it happened before we got here we don't know anything about it. Hell what happened to sir I wasn't here at that time but I will pull the case file and see if I can be of assistance . Since his death I know of several other agencies that have been treated crappy but APD OFFICIALS. I have a suggestion for our city's cops and officials " be careful of the bridges you burn, for you never know when you may need to cross them again."

Ms.Murray I only knew your husband from passing and a few conversations at ball games. But I know a lot of law enforcement and they all spoke highly of him always. I also know there are several young men he pulled over that were doing some wrong things but they were good kids and he would call their mamas and daddy's instead of taking them to jail and ruining their futures. The Alma pd is burning bridges faster than they can build them and turning our city into a speed trap worse than Nichols was back in the 90s and that's saying something. I am tired of seeing APD cars parked next to some females car shooting the breeze. My condolences for your families lose and Alma lost as well. I hope our city council members look at the new Alma PD under its current Chief an see where the problem is. I never understood why John wasn't the Chief in the end. He would have been a great one!

Bev , I do believe I have figured out who Concerened Citizen is. I have followed HIS post for awhile. I have come to the conclusion that he is probably book smart because of HIS wording. But the dumbass ain't got NO common sense at all. If you think long and hard I believe you will be able to figure it out also. I don't think he is too far from the PD. Sure hope Karma don't come down on him and his family.

That is not hard to answer....Because the City Manager and the Mayor didn't want somebody in that position that knew more than they did.

Keep dreaming if you think the Alma City Council is going to get rid of the city manager. He's caused nothing but problems since he got here, and the present council, mayor included, is going to let him keep destroying personnel until he decides his work is done and moves somewhere else. Why? Because nobody on the city council gives a damn about what he does as long as he doesn't hurt them or there family's interests or lively hoods. If the council had to work in the same room with him for one forty hour week they would all see, but they don't and never will. Nick Understreet runs the City of Alma, this is his city. He has all the power and the council is yellow so everybody get used to it. The people that don't like it can just hope he moves cause I guarantee you that the city council is not going to do anything about it. He is smarter than the council obviously. Give the man some credit, he has them all snowed. He could come in tomorrow and say, "Hey I want to fire the public works director and hire this guy I know from Milledgeville to fill the position. He doesn't have the experience that our director has and we'll have to pay him more, but I think it's for the best". Next thing you know, new public works director, LOL! Matter of fact, that's about the only hometown director the city has left come to think of it. But the council sure looks good sitting up there behind those seats making motions and doing there civic duty. Its a shame. The papers are scared of him too. If you knew how much the city manager makes a year to cause all this trouble, you would all faint. Yep, Nick's the man. All you haters better get it in your heads. Before long we'll be calling this town Nicholasville, and you know what, that don't sound too bad either cause the city that was Alma before he came is dead and gone. It ain't never coming back, even if the council wised up and rode him out of town on a rail. He killed Alma, so bury it, and move, that's my opinion. And we wonder why Douglas, Baxley, Waycross, and Hazlehurst are all better off, LOL!

I can answer that. John was not "political" he left that for the others. He didn't care to be involved on that side. He didn't want the headaches that came with trying to kiss somebody's backside. And I agree ALMA is getting a bad reputation and burning bridges quickly. I know several agencies that are not happy with the current police dept. I have friends in most of all the local law enforcement communities and I hear plenty.
