He has the money because he pays the lowest wages for his illegal immigrants who do all the work.

It's seems to me that it's very easy for people to say negative statements.
In the end an accident is an accident. I feel sorry for the owners of the farm. To have ignorant people comment is sad. No one wanted this to happen, and I don't think it's right that their forced to pay huge money that will be mis-spent anyways. We fertilize with manure!!! In the end that spill probably did more good for the river than damage. And why would anyone feel they have the right to comment about what an employer pays his staff. Shanks if you were smart enough to have a business you would keep an eye on the profit to. I own my own business, I'm in it to make a profit, but NY makes it increasingly difficult to do so. That's why everyone leaves. And the DEC is suppose to be the ones to prevent these accidents with regular inspections. Prehaps the DEC should be held more responsible for being asleep at the wheel.

I have to comment on the first 3 idiots that commented, Ron b, bonnville and shanks. They haven't a clue what they are talking about and should be ashamed of their comments. It was an accident, I know the farmers (I lived in Lowville for 12 years). This farmer is a Vietnam Vet and a good man who runs a huge farm and never meant for this to happen. Get your facts and your grammar correct the next time you comment on something.

To Port Leyden (says alot right there)
Oh Pleeeeeease!!!! Grow up !!!! You worked there big deal, that puts you in the know? This farm puts alot of $$$ into Lewis County, and these are very nice people we're talking about. But none of that matters, an accident is an accident! How would you like it if you had to pay 2.2 million because the sewer pipe broke off under your trailer and flooded the street????

I agree the farm pumps much needed dollars into the County-afterall the county needs all the business and employment it can get!
By the way-I highly doubt that "Port Leyden Talk' even lives in PL...at least I hope not. He/she is a damn embarassment to the educated/fine folks who have lived there for many many years. If PL talk does live there I will bet they are a recent transplant! Can you say LOSER!!!

This was no accident!!! It was a mishap that could have been prevented. An accident is something you cannot prevent or guard against and that is not the case here. It is the farmers responsibilty to ensure that such hazardous waste is contained, stored and disposed of correctly. His actions and neglect with improper design and management were all key contributing factors to this MISHAP. We all know that the Black river smells a little funny and sure there should of been more inspections of his establishment but who ultimate responsiblity is it to ensure a safe and healthful working condition... The Owner!!
