The Sioux should allow UND name to be keep "THE FIGHTING SIOUX" nickname as it is. It shows honor. Remember everyone knows "The fighting Irish" of Notre Dame. For generations we Irish were know as "The drunken fighting Irish"
Do we next drop "The Fighting Irish"?

The unofficial word around UND was that the U didn't offer enough "compensation" and that angered the tribal leaders.

Someone posted that if they drop the Fighting part off the nickname it would be better accepted. Should the same be said to the University of Illinois Fighting Illini? Speaking of high school and the MSHSL, how about the Warroad Warrior? They still use the same logo as UND. It should be an all or nothing thing no matter how much the NCAA makes off them in tournaments or bowl games.

Well the name does not excite nor offend me, but what do I know? I am just a fourth generation 55 year-old Caucasian with German and Irish heritage. Guess I should be against the nickmname "fighting Irish"?

How proper we've become! I find it offensive that Notre Dame continues to use "Fighting Irish". This is a direct slur at the Irish. How long until they are challenged to change their name? Not ALL Irish fight! Please! This is becoming beyond reality! The "Fighting Souix" are here to stay! Leave us alone and go sell your stupidity elsewhere!
What people don't understand when making this comparison is that the "fighting" in the Souix is intended to depict a warrior. The fighting in the Irish is a slur. The Irish were stereotyped as Drunk Fighting Irishmen. When talking about fighting irish it was implied that they were always drunk and fighting.

See, if the Indians had used their head, they would have told the NCAA we like the name and then make the state pay like ten zillion dollars for the use of it. Heck, you can call me "fighting sue" all you want for the right price!

As an American Indian, I am okay that Florida State has a deal with the Seminole Indians to keep their name. Notre Dame was started by Irish Catholics. No problem with the name they chose for themselves.
As for UND, drop the fighting part of the name. Show other examples of how you are paying respect to the name used. I'd be okay with it.
FYI, my daughter works on the Standing Rock reservation. Considering how the residents are treated by a majority of non-Indian employees, the BIA, BLM and other state/federal departments, I am not surprised at all by their objections.
Great post. I think we could find some common ground here. 1st: UND drops "Fighting" and maintains Sioux. 2nd: The BIA, BLM stop all Federal subsidies and handouts to Native Americans who reside on Sovereign land. Let them do what they want with their land. I for one would encourage them to provide TAX FEE business sites and open TAX FREE banking shelters for big business. Think of the money you could make if the Federal Govt. didn't have control over you through the BIA and BLM.

I grew up with the use of "Fighting Sioux". We never used team nicknames to honor the subject of the nickname. Whether calling them Bears, Tigers, or Sioux we meant to depict fearful nasty entities who would rip their opponents apart. We've moved away from that with team "mascots" usually limited to non-human characters. It is time to move on. The appropriate thing would be to do this quietly. Instead we have many sincere "tradition" supporters in consort with many who demonstrate just why no honor is being shown.

I absolutely can not believe we're still talking about this! What a waste of everyone's time and $. The school, and the state the school resides in, wants to keep their name. NCAA, let it go and focus on your REAL issues. And, if after umpty million years, the Sioux tribe now feels it's being discriminated against, it's likely about a $ payout.

What about the Warroad Warriors?
What about the Atlanta Braves, the Cleveland Indians or the Kansas City Chiefs?
Why did my High School change the their name from Indians over 10 years ago?
Why does this stuff start at the bottom with the kids instead of at the Pro Level with ADULTS?
Frankly, I'm offended

i too, as a native american, completely agree with your assessment of the situation, and have went as far as suggesting this to my tribal council during some meetings, but have always been met with a skepticism by those who wish to continue living the way the early european americans wanted us to live... in a secluded malnourished environment meant to keep us occupied with hunger so they could could continue living off the suffering of other human beings asa they still to this day grow obese and unwavering to their cause of continuous destruction of native peoples around the globe!

in the late 1800's the u.s. government tried to buy off the black hills from these sioux nations for approx. 50 cents an acre, and this money is still sitting in a bank account somewhere accumulating interest, because they refuse to accept this land annexation under any circumstance, so when you say this is about $, i say to you bull spit!
