I originally am from Reeder, ND. I used to work at the Gascoyne mine. When it closed, I tried to get a job at the other mines up by Beaulah and north of Bismarck. I even tried the seasonal temporary positions. I was told the type of equipment I ran was smaller than what they had and was not qualified. I then moved to Wyoming the following year. The first job I had, had the bigger equipment. They said I was more than qualified for the job (I was still hired by them on the spot). I know work for the largest surface coal mine in the united states as an equipment operator/trainer, and a mine rescue team captain/EMT/high angle rescue technician. When the state complains of not having workers, its because we all left because we were "under qualified" when actually we were not related to anyone who worked there. When they say "over qualified" your also not related to anyone who works there, or they are not willing to pay the wages you deserve.

I can't WAIT to leave ND. I was born & raised here, so I am definitely ready for a change. There is no opportunity for my field, anyway. I'm moving to the east coast next summer and I couldn't be happier. ND is such a bubble - people here have no idea what the world is like outside of the midwest.

In Williston everyone and their dog are hiring. And lots of people who leave ND end up coming back because the "outside world" isn't quite what its cracked up to be.

Why on earth would you want to live in Williston? It doesn't matter if a small town is hiring. Even if the pay is great - it's the PEOPLE of ND. I need to get away from the close-mindedness.
Actually, I left in 2000 and it was wonderful. I only moved back b/c I decided to go to school, plus I was young, and the cost of living was quite high where I was at.
After 7 years, I'm a little wiser, more mature, have more money and a college degree now. I am set to make it work. I have no plans of ever coming back.

Actually its pretty close-minded to say that the people of ND are close-minded. Thats what we call a "stereotype". Stereotyping is showing close-mindedness. Just because you've had experiences with people being that way means nothing..it means you haven't met the right people. And guess what...there are going to be close-minded people everywhere. Thats just like a minority accusing whites of being racist, which in itself its racist. Congratulations tho..I hope you succeed in life.

Mike, If you think that Bismarck let to many good paying retail jobs in and didn't check to make sure the fast food low paying jobs would have workers. Maybe they should get with the times people don't want to work for peanuts. Maybe you should come to Minot then because we have to go to Bismarck to shop at Sam's, Lowes.office depot, Petsmart just to name a few. I have lived in Minot all my life and the gentleman from PA was right this town nice to grow up.It is ran by the old people they want to tell everyone what they can pay there employees. Higher paying jobs but the City forfathers say they can't pay that high because they would have to raise their wages . The problem is most of Minot business are family run. And they are also on the City or Cty Boards so they don'y want to pay higher wages. The old farts that run this town need to move on or move over and let it change with the times, facts are that people need money to live and they are not going to stay when they are not being paid enough.

I think that you are a Horrible person and how could you do that to another PERSON! I mean they do the jobs that you wouldn’t do at all. They and many other people are the reason you live as you do. I think you wouldn't be where you are now if it wasn’t for them. They are just trying to make a livening for them and their Family! I'm Very sure that Mexicans aren't the only ones who pick up after you I'm Sure your mom did that job and most likely she sill does, and I'm Sure White people do that job too. You and people like You give Americans’ a bad name and you make us look BAD!

floyd, I know that Sanjel is hiring here in Williston. It seems Halliburton is almost always hiring here. I'm guessing Schlumberger probably is hiring, too, but not sure. In addition to workover oil companies, we have Key, Nabors, etc. Plus alot of casing companies..Joes Casing, American. I'm not sure about those places. But I just heard last night that Sanjel is hiring.
Halliburton sucks ass dont work for halliburton. what a lousy company

I don't think the whole story is being told. I have been looking for employment since last fall and I keep hearing, "you are over qualified for the position." Just exactly what does that mean?
What those employers are really saying is: "We want illegal aliens because they work cheap".

the oil and gas industry is very strong in williston right now and some of the jobs do pay very good but without and oilfield experience or a friend or relative to get you on a drilling rig the average pay for people woth no experience is probably about $15.00 per hour and some of the work isnt that fun there certainly not office jobs but you cab get al0ot of overtime in some of these jobs and now the rent and hosing keps going up so actually $40000.00 per year isnt that great up here right now a decent house will cost you around $150000.00 and some of the stuff only starts at $35000.00 per year

wes there are alot of jobs in williston right now and the oilfield is pretty strong the higher paying jobs are harder to get if you have no experience or if you dont have a friend or relative to get you on a drilling rig the alot of times they dont like to hire with no experience but the workover rigs do and they generally work like 5 days per week weeekends off probably 14 mhour days in hte spring and summer but just starting out probably make 70000.00 first year there are alot of jobs that pay like $15.00 per hour like roustabouting and they always wi9ll hire with no experience these jobs are a dime a dozen up here now but there are no places to rent and to buy have to spend about $120000.00 to get anythign decent but at the $15.00 per hour with overtime probably make about $45000.00 per year also i know that dickinson is very busy in the patch to and i think its a little easier to find places to rent or to buy
