Looks like The Varsity is gonna fall victim to the same thing that plagues so many restaurants in Asheboro...poor service. Last night a group of 10 of us went there and it was an absolute mess. First of all, we were not a difficult table. All adults, mostly drinking a few beers and ordering sandwiches and appetizers. The restaurant wasn't very busy either at around 8:45. On one occasion I went to pick up mine and my wife's drinks from the bar that had been sitting there for about 10 minutes. Mmmm...warm beer. But when the real problems began is when we wanted to leave. We asked for our check, separated by couple, and waited...and waited. Our checks finally came out and they were a mess. Our waitress left to go fix the checks, but did take time to make a call on her cell phone during this time. After we'd been waiting for about 30 minutes we asked a hostess if we could speak to a manager so we could hurry things along. We did have other plans that night. The hostess came back and said the manager was working on it and they'd have our check in a minute. We could see the manager trying to help out after that. Another 15 minutes or so goes by and our waitress comes back. She lays the full check on the table and asks us to "figure it out". At this point I get up and approach the manager and tell her that we really want to leave, but we've been waiting on our checks for almost an hour. She gave a few excuses (new restaurant, new waitress) then blamed me for not getting her involved earlier. She also said that she was only told about the problem 5 minutes earlier when we could see her trying to fix things with our waitress for almost 20 minutes. Anyway, after a little more time the manager comes back with the check (still incorrect), we pay it and leave. That was a very frustrating experience. Hopefully they'll get better. The place is actually very nice.

My wife and I(with some friends) were at the Varsity trying to enjoy a nice night out, when all of a sudden we heard yelling, foul language, and what seemed to be a big argument coming from the back kitchen. We were terribly disturbed by this and asked one of the waitresses what was going on. We were told that two of the guys in the kitchen were having a misunderstanding between the two of them and that it would be resolved. This went on for about 45 minutes, we finally left(without ordering). If this is the kind of establishment that Asheboro is allowing, it's a poor judgement. I, along with my friends, will pass the word around that if you want to go for a nice night out with friends, go someplace else. If you want to go to the "fights", then this is the place to go. I was told by other patrons that after we left, someone had been called in to take care of the matter and everything after he arrived calmed down. To whomever you are that resolved this major problem, "thank you", but it was a little late for us. In the future, I will go elsewhere, and hopefully, you will too.

BEWARE of disgruntled EX employees Also would like to point out few things: 1. Food critics usually don’t eat somewhere 3 times before rating. 2. They usually don’t use shortcuts, and proof read their comments in their writings and usually they are more specific (2 pages or more usually for the report)(using OK not just K, Forced THEIR Employees not THERE). 3. Food critics usually have their own website or page that they use. Not online news pages. Even if they do they will sign with their page or website address and full name with contact info at the bottom. 4. What food critic knows about employees personal issues so much up to know what their parents (MOM according to the CRITIC) said or did. Especially if that employee does not, engage a direct costumer contact. 5. At the end I would like to get some more info about this new company that I am not aware of ((Unlawful Firing Company)) very interesting name for a company. P.S. use spell check.

I have managed restaurants in the past and what I can tell you from my experience is that this is just a case of bad management. The staff do not seem to follow rules and are poorly trained. That is not their fault. That is managements fault. If a staff member is using the cell phone while working, the staff are arguing with each other, servers are not trained to "ask" members of a large party if they want separate checks before hand, and servers are not trained to get drinks or condiments to tables in a timely manner, then management is doing a poor job. 90% of managing a restaurant is training and following up on that training to ensure adherence to rules and policy. Management cannot run a restaurant sitting at the bar talking with the bartender or from the office for that matter. They need to be on the floor talking with their customers while making frequent trips to the back of the house to ensure quality product standards.

I agree with Customer from Clayton, NC. If it were not for my DUI keeping most people from hiring me to work in a restaurant with a bar, I would have applied. It takes a lot to manage a restaurant, and it goes way beyond just training. It also takes initiative to get in there and help out when the staff gets overwhelmed. Just because you are the manager does not mean you cant take food to a table, help fill a drink, and doing those things gives you a chance to introduce yourself, and find out if the customers are happy.

My daughter is a server at Varsity and I am VERY happy with the way things are going! The food is great, the atmosphere is fun and the service is wonderful! People should understand that new restaurants take time to work out kinks. Having only been open less than 6 months, Varsity seems to be making it allot better than other business's around the area. To the Varsity staff, I say keep your head and your work up. A couple bad comments won't stop you from making it. To everyone else who havn't had the chance to make it to Varsity, go by and check it out. You will leave full and happy! Thanks again for everything guys!
