The gentrification is one thing I do not like. At the same time it is nice to have many places fixed up.
The other side is that creative souls that have made Bisbee what it is can not afford to live there anymore. No way for anyone to make a living there.

well, id say they all play a big part in the entity that IS bisbees problem. dont forget crooked police. our cops are like fat angry ex school teachers with guns and hidden motives. and its nice to have stuff fixed up, but not when its in a town with no job market and 70% of its residents living far below the poverty line. gentrification will kill bisbee. it was the local spice that people spoke world wide about, and all those high end shops and eateries ran all the cool hipsters right out of town, with all that talk of red vested patrole goons...its not like bisbee is some beautiful oasis...surrounded by slag heaps with sulfur and cyanide blowing around in the air...lets face it, bisbee isnt going to bloom into a hotspot, and over pricing worthless crap in this junked out old mine town isnt going to make bisbee a desert laguna beach. people didnt come for the scenery, so cheap drugs are about the only thing left to support the majority of our economy and keep moral up amongst the disenfranchised 'dirty' locals. thank god sullys is there, for those of us not vacationing from maine...

I'm just curious why you think the cops are crooked and angry. Do you know something some of us don't?

I think City Hall and City Council is the problem and what's holding Bisbee back, and I'm not talking about just one or two individuals. The idea of raising the city sales tax by another 1% is crazy. That means that anything you buy in Bisbee will cost you nearly ten cents on every dollar you spend (or $1 for every $10).

What's wrong with Bisbee ever trying to attract other businesses that the residents and visitors would WANT to spend their money at?
I'm not the only one who goes out of town to buy groceries because the ONLY grocery store in town has ridiculously high prices. Or if I want to go out to eat, there are a couple of good places in Bisbee, but how many people, including myself, will spend money at a McDonalds or Taco Bell or even a Kentucky Fried Chicken when they go shopping for anything in another town? Those are tax dollars that Bisbee could really use! But if I can't buy what I want in Bisbee at a fair price, then I will spend the money elsewhere - just like a lot of others in Bisbee do.

I was told by one of our city officials once, that a McDonalds in a town similar in size to Bisbee, generated about $200k a year in tax revenue (that probably figures to about $50k for the city's share, after the state gets their's). That amount alone, is nearly HALF what an increase in sales tax would generate and it wouldn't cost anyone any more in taxes, it's only changed WHERE we spend our money!

Now, I use McDonalds as an example, and I realize not everyone will agree, but what about another grocery store? What about a different kind of restaurant? We're finally getting an Ace Hardware that will hopefully carry more than one of something without everything being on order and having to wait until Tuesday for the order to come in.

When a faucet breaks on Thursday, who wants to live without water until Tuesday, when the local hardware store will get it's order of one, new faucet in? Just another example of where Bisbee's tax dollars are going, because I'm now driving to Sierra Vista to buy a faucet (and probably a few other things) so I can have water again. And, I might even stop at Taco Bell or Pizza Hut, because I won't want to make dinner when I get home.

Taxes and lack of places to spend my money in Bisbee is only one part. Waste is another! Why were we told that Bisbee's public works office needed two secretaries for the sewer project, yet there are still two secretaries?(The sewer project has been over for years.) Is there that much work for a secretary in public works? For that matter, is there that much work that our public works even does that requires two secretaries? Public works isn't the only example, there are others.

Face it, city staff and city council are responsible for many of our problems as a city.

If the City sales tax passes, it will mean that our tax is ALMOST 11%- NOT 10%. Currently our sales tax is 9.6%- Porter wants to raise it to 10.6%- what a great idea in the midst of a recession!
This is nearly 11 cents on every dollar!!!!
Sierra Vista's current sales tax is 8.85%- who is going to shop in Bisbee if ours is 10.6%???? Jack Porter doesn't care - he promised to fix the streets so he's promoting raising City tax from 2.5% to 3.5%- a 40% increase!!! But all that matters is his campaign promise - not the people of Bisbee.
And even if the tax increase passes, how many years will it take the city to fix the streets??? They had the sidewalk money for more than 9 years before they did anything about it - at the expense of Old Bisbee lodging, restaurants and shops. The sewer project is still not complete 5 years later. We could pay additional taxes for years and never see any improvements in the streets.
To determine whether the cops are crooked, look at the case of Ed Holly - his abuse of power for years would have never stopped if he hadn't stalked a woman who lived in the county. Thank god for the sherrifs office - the Bisbee PD is great at cover ups!
Then we can discuss the wife-beating City Attorney - another City official to be proud of. Or the City Manager who was kicked off the National City Manager Association for sleeping with the City Clerk and fighting with her husband in City Hall. Who but Bisbee would hire these loosers????
With respect to new businesses coming into Bisbee - check out how difficult the city makes it for businesses to survive. They repair sidewalks at the beginning of Old Bisbee's short tourist season (they had the grant for this for almost 9 years). They want to raise sales tax despite the imact on all of the businesses throughout Bisbee. And they sell "virtual parking spaces" for thousands of dollars before they will allow a business to open. Who would WANT to open a business here?
We in Bisbee are a small food chain - we all need to make money and spend money to keep our heads above water. Whether we like one another or not is irrelevant - we need to buy locally and promote our community to stay alive. If only our City officials and Council would realize this, there would be hope that we would make it through this recession and continue to live in this beautiful place.

Instead of hiking the sales tax how about a service tax? I think for service work like say repairing someones car for instance, that could be taxed. What do you say? What's that? you say you'll take your business to some other town? Imagine that.

Wag, you say, "Instead of hiking the sales tax how about a service tax? I think for service work like say repairing someones car for instance, that could be taxed. What do you say? What's that? you say you'll take your business to some other town? Imagine that."

What difference does that make? It's STILL another tax.

The idea is for Bisbee residents to not spend more money on taxes, but for the City to attract other businesses where we can spend our money instead of taking it out of town - thus the tax dollars remain in Bisbee and don't go elsewhere.

If I can get my car repaired in Bisbee or buy reasonably priced tires for my car in Bisbee, or get my hair cut in Bisbee, or buy a pair of underwear in Bisbee, I don't mind doing so and helping support the local economy as well as putting those tax dollars into the City's coffers. But let's face it, unfortunately, my options are very limited in Bisbee.

I see a lot of complainers about our Mayor and Council and yet none of you stand up and run for office to change things. Look at our Mayor race, we have as is and has been to choose from. In several of the council seats there is no one but the incumbent running. Some of them have been in there for way to long.
All I am saying is a little less bitching and a little more standing up for change would go a long way to solving some of these problems. At least there is a choice in Ward 2.

Do you really need to click on an "other" box to be allowed to tell us what you think? Just go ahead and say it!:)

There could be a lot of improvement on your side as well. So, why don't you work on that? Maybe you could spend more time helping your mentor, Jeff Harris, by posting over on his worthless, anti-government, forum. What is it called: "The Prick".
