I recently signed Jack Whetstone's nomination petition for Mayor. His views are right in line with so many of Bisbee's residents who feel they have not been properly represented.

So Jack Whetstone is going to toss his hat in the ring? He gets my vote. The guy has a clean record and he isn't vindictive or a bully or dumb like the other Jack. This City needs someone like Jack Whetstone.

I think someone who supports mining and growth will have a hard time getting my vote....clean or not

Get back on topic; this thread has nothing to do with Mayor Ron ... clean or not.

Perhaps you should all realize that, IF mining comes back to Bisbee, it's going to bear little relationship to the Pit and what you all think you remember. Mining is no longer labor-intensive, it cannot by law be as destructive to the landscape and the environment as the mining which left its evidence all around us, and it is almost certainly not going to produce the kinds of impacts with which Bisbee learned to live in the past.
Growth is another issue. There can literally be very little growth in OB or Warren (there's just no room, and the lots aren't big enough to allow for 'teardowns' or 'McMansions'), which means that San Jose is the only ripe territory for 'growth'. And JCharleyChimp has that well in hand -- don't you, JCharley?

I know Jack Whetstone and he is not for mining and growth, that would be your friends Jack Porter and Ron Oertle.

That's funny, I talked to him at the farmers market Sat. where he was passing his petition and he said he wants to make sure the mining and growth that is coming will benifit the city. Not what I call an antigrowth/minimg position, get your facts straight.
True mining will not be what it was, but to paint a rosy picture and say we will not be hit with dust, noise, closed roads, just ask some of the residents around the other FPMR mines in AZ and see what they think. I have and it isn't pretty or rosy.

Not exactly what I would call a PRO-growth/mining position, either! The awareness that change is coming, coupled with a desire to help make it both positive and managed, is not a stupid or bad position.

Let's face facts, folks: Change and growth ARE both bound to happen. The return of mining is considerably less certain, but we certainly need to be prepared if it happens.

Let's not be in such a hurry to tar someone with 'anti' or 'pro'. Let's find out what they have to say and suggest, before we harden our positions.

That said, I repeat my earlier question: Who is Jack Whetstone, and why is he running? For that matter, when are we going to hear any ideas, thoughts, or positions from ANY of the candidates? Why is Betty so reticent? Has Jack had anything to say recently -- except to hijack a thousand bucks from the City for his race? Does anyone know if Ron is still breathing?

As was said before, posting anonymously gives you absolutely no credibility as to what you supposedly heard.

I have to suspect that you favor another candidate (or you ARE another candidate) and are simply using underhanded means to sabotage an opponent.

I hardly think that an educated Wildlife Biologist is pro development and mining. Jack Cannon has a good take, so read his post. Unfortunately there are many stupid people who don't realize that if McFarlin and whoever they are want to start mining that they can! Don't they have mining rights to basically the entire town? Of course, it would not be like years ago where they could easily move your house and start diggin. Face it folks, if mining is going to happen you can't STOP it, but you can act intelligently and attempt to reduce the impact on the environment and the community. I have a feeling "Dig in" is most likely someone running for Mayor who wants to already start a smear campaign against Jack Whetstone. I think it is great that Jack Whetstone is involved in Wildlife Biology--there are many people in Old Bisbee who live here because of the wildlife and the environment and want to protect it. Go vote for Jack P. or Ron O., Dig In, but stop trying to spread untrue dirt about Jack Whetstone. Isn't that smear campaign just like the friends of Jack Porter's?

First, I am not Porter's friend or Rons for that matter. A am anti-growth and anti-mining, hardly supported by the about two. Can you stop mining, it has been done and it takes money and lawyers who will tie things up in court for years. Can you stop growth, it takes a mayor who will not allow being run over. Is that Mr Whetstone??? Not what I heard from his own mouth. You are all posting anonymously, so don't give me a hard time. You all sound like the candidate Jack W trying to sell himself (because no one has ever heard of him), more that I sound like someone running for mayor!!! If you are such good friends of Whetstone, tell him to post here and tell us his positions.

Shucks, Dig, I'd be happy if ANY of the candidates said anything in public! Doesn't have to be here on Topix (I don't think Porter can write...)

Jack, except to friends and political advisors, I have not spoken out for a couple of reasons: First, local campaigns in Bisbee usually don't get started until June, when nomination petitions are filed. Until I am an official candidate, discussions are no more than political banter. I certainly don't want everyone sick of the issues before the campaign even gets going.
Second, I have not been idle, but rather studying issues, questioning folks, and meeting with experts in various fields that pertain to the well being of Bisbee and its citizens.
I'll file my petitions this week and officially kick off my campaign at the Democratic Picnic at the Warren Ballpark on Sunday, June 1st. After that time, I'll be available all summer to answer questions, give my opinions (which I love to do!),hold debates if other candidates are willing, attend coffees, etc.
I would like to use these public forums as another medium for information and discussion. As long as the posters remain civil and have a true interest in the mayoral race, I would love to participate. Historically, this has not been the case but I'm certainly willing to give it another try.
Thanks for your interest.
Betty Lindstrom
