For those who haven't seen the whole story - Obama signed a bill banning any flavorings that make tobacco taste good, including cloves. That's why I'm saying alcohol mixers are probably the next to go...

Could be - better stock up. You might be able to get a good price for them later on the Black Market.

Well, what did you expect from Mr. Hopey-Changey?

It's the so-called "Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act." It gives the Food and Drug Administration the power to regulate tobacco products.

It bans the words "light" or "mild" in tobacco advertising, as well as any words that give the impression that one cigarette is less dangerous than another, and it bans flavored tobacco products, like clove or cappuccino cigarettes.

It also applies to all tobacco products, not just cigarettes apparently, so the "Clinton Monica-Flavored Dip" cigar is also outlawed.

That last might be debatable - you can probably still flavor your own...lol
Obama himself smokes menthols - no mention of menthol being banned - I would think that would be considered a flavoring, too. Hmm.
I always liked the smell of clove cigarettes and vanilla pipe tobacco, at least much more than plain smoke. I don't really think that flavored tobaccos were such a big factor in getting "young people" to start smoking. If anything, those who like Djarums will just make their own version with clove oil, which is pretty corrosive and more risky. I'm not a smoker myself, but I think this ban is odd and unnecessary.

The Title of this Thread was misleading. I wholeheartedly support the "Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act". There is not one single thing good about cigarettes. It is a horrible addiction which has been a detriment on Society. There are many smokers here in Bisbee mostly low income people on Access. Those people always have money for booze and cigarettes. The Government should stop giving assistance to people with addiction problems until they clean up and stay that way. I think this is a good thing and not about banning cloves as the use of a spice.

Too much nanny-state mentality.

And it is all very confusing.

"Excuse me, Mr. Circle K clerk, may I have some clove cigarettes?

"NO! Don't you know it is a horrible addiction which has been a detriment on Society? They are BAD FOR YOU and illegal, and you shouldn't be putting them in your body."

"Oh, ok. I just wanted something before I attend a Pro-Life rally..."

"WHAT? Don't you know that a woman has a right to control her body?!? How DARE you interfere!"

Yes, Howard, we get it. We know they're not banning cloves as spice, or nutmeg, or vanilla cake flavoring, etc. We also get that it's not a ban on cigarettes, it's a ban on *flavoring* in tobacco. I'm sure most people would agree, smoking is dangerous and unhealthy and we all wish it didn't cause cancer. It does, and it's not the flavoring that causes it.
However, people are still going to smoke and this bill is just cutting down on choices which really have no effect on that. I'm sure you are all for government control until it steps on one of YOUR choices...then I bet we'll hear some screaming!

I am sure that you would not want to deny anyone the right to speak out about their beliefs. The Howard poster has his and you have yours. Why be so mean and condescending to someone else?

Here's a thought. The government could both legalize and socialize the drug trade and use the money to pay for heath care. The money we'd save on cops, prisons and prosecutions alone would be huge. Maybe there would be enough left over to pay for a huge mass transit system so this idiots wouldn't be driving on the same roads as us. One catch though, if you do actually use drugs you have to go to Mexico for your health care.

From what I hear from friends who live there, the health care in Mexico is much better than ours now.(At least in larger metropolitan areas like Puerto Vallarta)

As long as the test is multiple choice.
