Nothing wrong with 1.75 a day. Double Cheeseburger (.99) and some water is pretty good for a days meal.
We need to treat prisoners poorly and horribly so they don't want to return to prison.

The solution is simple. DON'T GO TO JAIL!

Having eaten jail food, "too bad". You get what you deserve. I actually gained weight from what I was given to eat, of course they don't give you any exercise or jobs to do while you wait for trial or prison. Inmates should work and work hard. Jail should be somewhere you DON'T want to be. It's punishment not camp.

Well I disagree. There are people in jail for crimes that they didn't committ. Innocent. With the law of today You are guilty until proven innocent. And I know someone that was in jail for a good 15 years and about 3 years ago they proved that the person did not committ the crime. Which I think should have been proven a long time ago. The real killer was shot in a police shootout. Now that was 15 horrible years out of his life. His mother pass, grandmother and that was about all he had left.

Our prison system could learn a thing or two about saving a buck from Alabama's Sheriffs. They've managed to keep prisoners fed on $1.75/day. While incarcerated, prisoners shouldn't expect semi-gourmet meals or special dietary treatment. They manage well on Alabama's "Depression-style frugality, and maybe the rest of us should take a few lessons on how to accomplish this feat, since we may be facing similar situations in our daily lives given the dire state of the economy. And another thing, Chain Gangs should be revived. I can't think of a better measure to reduce costs by delegating hard-labor and menial tasks by criminals, thus saving townships a lot of tax dollars in the process.

They're in jail not on a vacation or hotel stay. They're always complaining about what they receive or not, it's free!!! Lots of us working people can't even afford cable tv or go to a gym, you criminals get it for free!!! Why should crime stop? It's a free all inclusive vacation, right?!!!

well then MAYBE they will not come back, lol and maybe hell will freeze over!! Most jails have a "store" where they can buy food with the money their family sends, or from the jobs they hold down at jail...
They can suck it up...

The DA in Mobile County, AL nearly put the sheriff there in prison for this program because the money isn't really supposed to be for their personal benefit but for supplementing the jail operational costs. The sheriff ended up resigning and turning the money back over to the jail.

If the state know how much they are paying the sheriff for inmates food, they should be able to see what money is actualy being spent on food items, from there you look at the staffing cost (cooks) take out materials and supplies (all budgeted items) and what is left would be the sherrifs profits. I dont see why they can not deduce roughly the amount the sheriff is keeping as profit?

I think 1.75 is a lot for day, that is basically going for meats and bread... Most jails have a farm that they grow their own produce, or that is donated to the facility... What is the worst that will happen, they will eat HEALTHY FOOD!!! What Torture for the morons!!!

Hey, I spent some time in the Etowah County Jail under James Hayes. He runs a nice jail. Good food, pool, TV, Playstation III, and Playstation II. I had the dollars for the bail, but dang, who wanted to leave, I stayed for nearly 5 weeks and had the trial put off for 3 more just so I didn't have to get out and worry about where the next meal was coming from or if I was going to have a roof over my head. So, if ya gotta go to jail, go to jail in Etowah County, Alabama. But hey, that Marshall County jail is not good. The sheriff up there runs a brothel and if you aint a woman inmate, you're in trouble.
