The ones who closely follow NG drilling know it is going to happen. The trucks and gas people have been all over Broome County for the last year surveying and getting ready. They know it's going to happen. The moratorium will be lifted very shortly - I'm betting before the election. Maybe even days from now.
I know a number of folks that work for the gas companies in and around the area... and here is what is actually happening...

There is currently a glut of natural gas... so much so that our storage capacity for it in the USA has pretty much run out... which means that what is pulled from the ground cannot exceed the current shipping capacity that is available i.e. to sell it to other nations...

The end result of that is we aren't pumping as much right now... and many of the companies have laid off workers... and providing anecdotal evidence / support of what I just wrote - out of the 10 folks I know around the state that are in that industry - 8 of them are currently laid off...

So while it might be pleasant to believe that drilling for gas etc. will somehow save / boost the local economies right now - the reality appears to be quite different...

Another item no one seems to talk about...

Does everyone know what a "severance tax" is in regard to oil and gas... you know - the tax that most states that produce such products levy on the companies based on the value of the extracted oil / gas... with states like Texas ( known for producing those products ) having last time I checked something like a 7.5% severance tax...

Now here is where it gets interesting...

Did you realize that the state the gas companies have been flocking to ( PA )- has no such tax... which makes it much cheaper for the gas companies to get their product... but it also means that the citizens of that state get little to nothing directly from the extraction of their natural resources...

The same thing goes for NY i.e. no severance tax... which makes drilling here much more appealing than other places... but like PA - means we would be missing out on a lot of revenue we should be getting as a result of activities associated with the Marcellus Shale formation...

So my personal opinion - in addition to safety concerns - which you've all already heard... is that the first thing we should be doing is discussing putting a severance tax in place like most other gas / oil producing states have... so we KNOW that we will get some concrete benefit from the drilling... instead of the current scenario that attempts to rely on taxing the individual workers of the gas companies... workers that once the wells are drilled and producing - are often no longer needed and not providing any "revenue"...

The moratorium will be lifted shortly. You can bloviate all you want to if it makes you feel better though.

Well...

People have been drilling for oil etc. in Texas for more than 100 years... so that state has a lot of experience in and with the industry... and you know - a severance tax seems to work for them...

So I'm really curious why we don't have something like that in place here in NY... because it's pretty darn clear that it's absence is costing and going to cost our state a whole lot of revenue...
