So two things first...

a) Defense contractors are usually known for making weapons... you know - those things used to kill other human beings... so imho it's really cool to see one of them create something that could do the exact opposite and help people...

b) One of the biggest problems people on our planet ( not us in the USA yet ) face is getting fresh water... and the reason why is because even those living near oceans / salt water can't use it without desalination plants being built... which are expensive to construct and even more so to operate...

May I present:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/13/us-...

It's a new graphite / grapheme filter... that when compared to a normal desal system:

"The energy that's required and the pressure that's required to filter salt is approximately 100 times less."

It would be fantastic if they were really cheap to produce too... and I am guessing based on stuff I have experimented with the boys that they will - or at least can be sometime in the future:

That's a link to making grapheme ( not the filter they're talking about though ) using graphite oxide and a dvd player with a burner diode in it...

Cool huh ?!

If I remember right...

They use among other things the heat from the fuel they burn for transportation / turn the props to also run their desalination plant onboard... efficient for them but not so much for a land based desal unit where a large(r) portion of the energy goes to waste...

Side note...

I had a friend of mine almost convince me to go on a Carnival cruise in a couple of month... but have you been watching the news... something like 3 ships out of commission in just a month... a combination of mechanical ( engine - which affects EVERYTHING ) and norovirus...

Eventually said no earlier this week...

Now I am trying to get him to do one of the "slow" ships... as they do still run... much cheaper and normally from just a few dozen to a few hundred... no "zip line adventure" but it's an experience e.g. you actually get to know the folks traveling with you !
