Billings Teacher Tells How To Vote In School Board Election!

I can't believe a Billings teacher would be so bold as to tell the students in class to go home and tell their parents how to vote in the upcoming school board election. First, the election is not until 2011. Second, a teacher involved in this type of behavior is subject to termination according to RSMo. 168.130. Teachers not to participate in management of school board election, campaign.“No teacher shall take part in the management of the campaign for the election or defeat of members of a board of education by which he is employed. Any teacher who violates the provisions of this section shall be subject to termination of his employment by the district with the right of a hearing and appeal as heretofore provided.”
I wish teachers would just stick to teaching and doing everything above and beyond for the kids to obtain scholorships and better their lives. Kids have enough to worry about without getting involved in petty conflicts that are personal and have no business being discussed in the class room. Parents need to get involved and asked their children questions and let the school district, including the board members, know that this type of behavior will NOT be tolerated.
Unbelievable!!
Am I wrong, and please stick to the subject at hand when answering.

This teacher has total immoral conduct in everything she does - I wonder if she will just get a slap on the hand AGAIN! I won't be surprised!!

Well this is exactly why I pulled my children out of the Billings School system and now homeschool them. It's all politics there and nothing ever happens except a slap on the wrist to the teachers, staff and administrators. I believe the state statute mandates that the teacher be terminated I will be interested to hear the outcome! Now if it were a child in a fight or immoral behavior they would be immediately suspended from school. She is probably sitting in her classroom still dictating to the students on how their parents and friends should vote and laughing all the way.
Just my thoughts........

If that happened in my kid's class I would be at the school right now sitting in the class room making sure that the teacher taught the subject they were hired to teach and kept their nose out of the student/parent's personal lives. What teacher tells a student to go tell their parents how to do anything! I would hope my kid knows better than to tell me what I am supposed to do. Someone needs to show this teacher exactly what a teacher's job is and keep out of the students'/parents' personal lives.
I think that RSMo. 168.130 is very clear and concise on this issue.

Do you remember when being an educator was an honorable profession that others respected? Everytime an educator chooses to act unethically they have a rippling and resounding effect on the rest of us who struggle to maintain the high standards that result in student learning! Maybe the person wanted to get fired. It is difficult to imagine any other explanation considering the assanine degree of this offense. What type of person chooses a room full of minors to air their personal beliefs regarding an election that won't even happen for a year? One can only imagine what else is likely to go on in this room? This reeks of incompetence. Our students deserve to have a role model they can emulate without embarrassing themselves!

Good point educatorinput! This is more than likely an self-centered, hateful, low self-esteem, person that has no friends outside of school and is preying on the children because he/she has done something wrong and is seeking revenge. That's just a guess, but, being a psychologist it would appear that there is something else going on here, probably personal. All I can say is parents need to be completely 110% involved in their children's education, ask questions - "how was your day" etc... know what is happening in their lives - go to school and visit with their educators! If you don't have time to do this then DON'T have children! Time is just a BS excuse and it's a lousy one! Call your school board members, let them know that you are an involved parent and you will not accept this type of behavior. Talk to the principal and superintendent. If you still get no answers lodge a complaint with DESE (Missouri Dept of Elementary and Secondary Education) http://dese.mo.gov
Good Luck!

I taught at Billings many, many, many, years ago and it was and probably is still a great school. I had to request a leave of absence and was not granted one, the FMLA was not law then, however, I moved on regrettably. I loved that school and the students and parents in it. I believe that the school board will deal with this issue in a prompt and effective manner. They always put the students first. Any teacher who would compromise such a realationship and student/teacher for a personal gain has no business teaching. The students when I was there were like my own children and they always rised above any issues and I believe they will here also. There is something to say for small towns and their beliefs. They stick to together. I kinda feel sorry for the teacher who will be hung in the town square but he/she should have known better than to drag minors/students into such an issue! God bless teachers and all they do! If you don't like it, you can always homeschool!

ok, seriously, this teacher, whose name I will not mention, but SHE believes she rules this school, she was a horrible volleyball coach and was FIRED from that position, her husband is currently employed there and God only knows why, he has done nothing to help the athletics get scholorships as the AD (Athletic Director) which I thought would be an upmost priority for an AD, he plays his son and lower players talk about favoritism screwing varisty players out of a scholorship, come on, the freshman players have 4 years to prove themseleves, varsity have 1-2 years, HELLO!

I have heard the names of these teachers mentioned over and over. I have heard how vendictive this teacher is and quite frankly am tired of hearing her name. If this board does not STEP UP and put an end to her and her husbands teaching in this district I am going to be seriously conserned for my own grandkids and what they may have to go through if they are targeted by them. Most of us sit back quietly to avoid anything happening to our own. But seriously, ENOUGH ALREADY!!!

As a concerned Billings alumni, I feel that attacking a teacher on a public website is very unprofessional. No one knows what ACTUALLY happened in the classroom and if the source is reliable and unbiased. I am not defending this teacher but feel that people need to get their facts straight before judging. I just wonder if there is a motive behind attacking this family. I find it coincidental considering that there were no complaints prior to a board members child not getting enough playing time on the basketball court. This is not the first time the board members of the Billings School District have attempted to remove a coach....

As of grandma of kids in the Billings school I feel that a teacher attaching school board members to students who have no choice but to sit there and listen to it completely unprofessional, wrong, an abuse use of power and most definetly immature! It would appear that "concerned" is somewhat familiar with the "facts" considering it to be such a bold statement as to accuse a board member of abusing power. I just wonder how many games "concerned" attended to see us winning and then at the last minute pull our players capable of winning the game and put in others and end up losing? It really was quite embrassing, I must say! More so, how does one know that there were no complaints prior against this teacher? Because I am almost certain, after watching the volleyball games and basketball games, that there were many parents and grandparents digusted. So I guess it's okay to play your own son verus playing the players that are actually varisty material and screwing them out of scholorships, who knew! I believe the score is 10 to 1 at this time and the teacher is losing. As homeschoolmom36 said, this is just my thoughts......

Bottom line is this teacher whoever he/she may be violated a serious statute RSMo. 168.130. The statute is very clear and every teacher knows that they are not to get involved with school board elections. Just as board members know and abstain from votes when their child is involved in an issue, or, as the case may be when my parent was a board member I always got screwed and got the worst punishment possible because I was a board members child and as such had to live to a higher standard! It really quite simply, go to your board meetings and see how your board votes, know who they are and if they are looking out for the best interest of the children. The worst board member possible are those who have no opinions and never speak up one way or the other, they are the fence riders and more than likely only there to protect their own children. If they have school website I'm sure you can obtain the board members telephone numbers from that or at least the school telephone number and asked for the board member names and numbers.

Seeing as how the election for school board members was already completed, and the school board member in question will not be up for a campaign for re-election until 2011, I do not see how this faculty member has broken any law. I do not believe there was any attempt to help or hinder a campaign for school board.

This teacher's record in the classroom is outstanding. She has prepared many students for college-level English in her tenure at Billings High School. She is an alumni of Billings and has supported all of the students within the school system for many years. If we lose this teacher from our school, we will truly be doing a disservice to our children.

The originator of this strand said to stick to the topic, and I believe that many of the responders have failed to do that. This is not about her husband or coaching (though she resigned from volleyball, she was not fired).

If you even know which teacher you are talking about, then most of the things you have stated so far are completely incorrect. She resigned from the position of Volleyball Coach. In fact, since she resigned it seems like she's been getting more done in class. Could that be the reason? Not according to your judgments. As far as playing Seniors vs Freshman if the Freshman are more talented they should be played not because of their grade. Hello! I didn't see anyone on the varsity basketball team that had the drive or talent for a scholarship. Sounds to me like you all have a personal agenda against this teacher not about her teaching abilities.

I GO to BHS, I'm a student, I LEARN there. I find this entire situation ridiculous. The teacher was punished, everything was solved. Honestly, you guys are causing more drama than what happens IN SCHOOL. I think I speak for the majority of the students when I say that we're tired of getting new teachers and coaches every year. The fact that you guys are bringing up sports and who plays or not is completely unrelated. Of course you all want your kids to do well in sports, fact is, they have to work for it. As far as I can see, these kids don't deserve scholarships at all. So as far as you parents are concerned, you don't know what kind of teacher this person is. Are you a student of hers? No. She is one of the only teachers that actually cares about her students. The other day she explained how she was helping a graduated student with some college essay work. What other teacher would do that? So go ahead, try to fire her. What you'll get: Students not being prepared for college, maybe another teacher who can't even teach, students having to get used to yet another teacher. You're only causing problems. LET IT GO.

It's funny that a teacher spoke her opinion out loud and it caused all this drama. Everything that's been said so far seems petty. It not rocket science people: if you want "CHANGE" then parents need to go to school board meetings and see for themselves how its ran. I've seen whispering and eye rolls when people ask a question or state there feelings about matters. As a parent and concerned patron of this city is this right? Maybe new blood is the answer. And as for the school, it should be an education over sports. For those who brought up scholarships for sports, maybe the parents are at fault for not asking the coach for help. If a kid is good the scouts hear about you and they come to the school to see for themselves. That's the way its been for years. It seems to me that there is more hear say and gossip than facts about the matter. As a parent lets keep the good teacher's that we have. Don't drive them away! Would you want people spreading rumors about you?
