My family and I went on vacation to Gettysburg in October and fell in love with the place. Does anyone know how easy it is to find a job there, how much rent usually run, and any small colleges near by? And one more thing.. how is your police force? I come from a small southern town and I know it will be a big change but your town is just amazingly beautiful.

Depends on what you do
Depends on how close to the cneter of town you want to be
There is actually a college in town (?)
Police is fine
Google could be a big help.

Shippensburg university is 30 minutes away and I think has a good program for teachers. I am not sure what Gettysburg College offers but I am sure you can Google that.
Teaching jobs are hard to come by everywhere I think.
Rent someplace out of town to keep it cheap and come into town on visits.

You won't be welcomed. The locals don't care for out siders or tourists. It may appear to be a friendly, welcoming place but, that is just a fabrication for the tourist trade. That small town feeling isn't found in Gettysburg only hostile locals are.

Shippensburg has a great elementary education program. Other colleges within a short distance from Gettysburg are Mount St. Mary's and York College. Job opportunities are as difficult as any area right now. Many, many applicants for the jobs that are offered. If you have that special quality an employer is looking for who knows? Funding cuts for education proposed for PA may make things a bit more difficult for you if you are looking for a teaching position. The public elementary schools here have a wonderful sense of family and awesome teachers for the most part. There is also a charter school, Montessori, and private parochial school in town.

Rent for houses can run anywhere from $800-$1500 a month. For around $1000-1200 you can rent a pretty nice house.

I am more than happy to try to answer any questions you might have.

Good for you! My family and I moved here about 8 years ago from a big city and love it! And don't listen to the person above who said you won't be welcomed here. We always were welcomed when we came for vacations before moving here and still are. Everyone has been really friendly here which is one of the reasons why we came here.

There's also HACC Gettysburg campus out here which is like 2 min from the center of town.

Not sure about jobs in your field.

As for rent, it varies of course on how many rooms you need, what's included, etc. I know people who rent apartments, both in town and both 2 bedrooms and one person is paying $450 a month (and even has a washer and dryer) and the other $750 (and has to use the laundro-mat). So, it all depends.

Also be advised that some of the apartments in town DO NOT offer parking/parking spot and you will need to rent a space at the Racehorse Alley Garage (behind the Gettysburg Hotel in town square/circle) for $60 per vehicle. Just something to keep in mind to ask about. Not sure on house rental prices.

There are also brand new apartments that were just built last year called The Carlisle Apartments. Here's their website:

HAHA Angie, we all know you're some of the "super posters" hiding under another name. Gettysburg ISN'T transplant or vistor friendly.

Is that so, we visited there many times and enjoyed it and found the people to be friendly except for that cigar joint down by the square, they seemed to be a little snobby there. The one up by Jenny Wade's House was very friendly. So was the rest of Gettysburg.

well if you wanted to turn me off then I guess you did. I was hoping that what was always said about northerners wasn't true. Not everyone can be hospitable though .

You will make your own decisions as to what to do. In your first post, you said that you ďfell in love with the place.Ē Now you say that people have turned you off. Didnít you talk to anyone in your first visit?

Just look at these post if you would. Those who live in this area, enjoy it and indicate that you would most likely be welcomed. There are three from people who do not live in the area, who have not been very kind to the area, but look at their location, and look at other post they have made on other subjects about Gettysburg, and you will find that they have nothing nice to say about Gettysburg at all, and most probably they have never even visited Gettysburg, and probably couldnít find it on a map if they had one.

Make up your own mind, but for myself, I would love noplace else. This area has wonderful scenery, lots of history, and wonderful people. We have just about anything you can want within a two hour drive from the big city life, with theaters, and professional sports in Baltimore and Washington, to great fishing, sailing and boating of the Chesapeake Bay, to some of the best skinning on the east coast to the west of us.

Gettysburg also has some of the most wonderful people you will ever find. Is there a chance you will find someone you donít like or get along with, yes I am sure. But tell me do you like and enjoy spending time with everyone where you live now?

Gettysburg is a community like any other community. You will find small sections of the area that you donít like and some you just love. You will find restaurants you canít get enough of and ones you will visit only once. You will find stores you will shop in every day and some you will never visit.

You will of course make up your mind, and I feel sure you will do what you feel is right for you, and I do wish you will in your decision.

See that, you said that some of us, and I am assuming myself is one of those posters that couldn't find it on the map. Now, how unfriendly is that. How UNfriendly is that the locals don't like tourists OR reenactors? I would have never known any of this if it weren't from some posters who made miserable remarks when Boyd's was going out of businesses. They complain there aren't any jobs and nothing to do after five p.m. So why would anyone want to live there? The locals did more to discourage people from visiting then anyone else.
I've always said that Gettysburg is a nice area. Nicer that a CASINO isn't coming there. But had some of the locals had there way, that would be a different story.
Move somehwere else where the locals ARR truely friendly, cause excpet for a few, most of the locals HATE outsiders.

Yes I will be unkind to people who have never visited my town, yet continue to make disparaging and derogatory remarks about it.

Gettysburg and all of the surrounding area, from Hanover to Chambersburg, and from Dillsburg to Frederick is a wonderful area to live and visit.

I would say that statement is true about people in general, no matter where you may come from. Regardless, what are the odds that you and Angie would find the ONLY friendly people in Gettysburg? Seems improbable, unless your posts were purposefully directed to come to this conclusion.

Your making an assumption that I've never visited your area, which is false. If you remember ( which you don't or won't) I said nice things about Gettysburg and the closing of Boyd's. it isn't my fault that I was met with hostility from some of your "friendly" locals. You're all so warm and friendly which is why I keep posting.
I've been berated constantly on spelling and grammar erros, but I've had your shorts in a knot for almost two years now. Now, let me ask you, who are the dumb ones?
All this bickering and insulting, and guess what, you still aren't getting a casino and nothing changed.

Seems rather odd that you would visit a place that shows such hostility towards outsiders. Maybe looking in the mirror may show who the dumb one is.

Then the logical conclusion for a rational person is that you have nothing left to come for or talk about. So take your marbles and go home if you have nothing substantial to contribute to the discussion.
