Full story: Evening Sun

The crate of a 12-year-old boxer named Emmy caught fire earlier this month at a Biglerville home.

There is a lot more you can do. BRING HER INSIDE YOUR HOUSE!! Would you be warm enough in the garage? I doubt it. Poor dog - cold weather makes arthritic pain almost unbearable.
Once again, I am disappointed in the Adams Co SPCA. They need to educate thier officers better. If they think this so called " investigation" means something..it does not. Hope they go back and check on the dog. I wonder if they even talked to the vet that cares for the dog.

BRING her into the house. The garage might be out of the elements BUT is not WARM or COMFORTABLE. If you truly care about your pets, they are part of your family, treat them like it. Would you sleep in the garage!!!? I know I wouldn't nor let anyone I love do it either!

Listen... They have three small children in the house at all times who have very bad ashma and allergies. The dog can not be in the house. Would you want to see 3 children under the age of four die of an allergic reaction?

Caring about your pet and caring FOR your pet are two completely different things. Caring for this pet with PAINFUL Arthritis would be bringing her in the house. If she can't come in because their kids have allergies, give her to a home which can appreciate and love her INSIDE where it's WARM.

I agree. If the 2 dogs are outside all the time and can't go into the house especially a 15 yr old with really bad arthritis give her to someone that will let her inside a warm house. Putting a coat on Emmy and her staying inside a cold garage isn't enough. How would you like to live in the cold with your whole body aching from the cold?

I do not know this family. But I do believe they do care for the dog and if that is acceptable shelter, it's okay. You must not have any idea how hard it is to place an elderly dog with health problems. My father, who now resides in heaven, owned hunting dogs all his life. They never resided in the house. They slept in the barn with the cows and assorted farm animals. Use your common sense.

You guys are seriously obnoxious. If the spca took her they would put her down right away. The dog is perfectly fine. The garage isn't cold. Let it go. They have had this dog for over 12 years and she has never been sick, injured, beaten, hit or starved. She is warm and loved. How would you feel if some paper wrote a story about your family... I would love to come to each and every single one of your homes because i know i could find something your doing wrong and a paper would love to write about it. Get a life.

Oh, and just because they are "hunting dogs" makes it ok for them to stay outside, I guess "hunting dogs" are more superior to all other dogs, they must not get cold. Puleeeze!

And you obviously do not have pets! The dog has arthritis, don't say she's never been sick, have you ever cared for an arthritic animal?? Yes, the garage is cold!

Thank you. If a dog is outside all of its life you can't just bring it in the house. I bet if people looked around their neighborhood they would find tons of animals outside in the cold. Emmy is not chained up with no shelter. She roams freely in and out whenever she likes. Everytime I go to the house shes always walking around the yard. It's not like they force her to stay in the wind and cold. We really appreciate your support thank you.

Actually I did have animals... My dog just died of lyme disease. Maybe your garage is cold. You know what emmy was my dog. so suck on that. My grandparents took her for me so she could have room to run and be a dog.

As far as I can see, you are an arrogant spoiled POS! You don't come on here and say you want to punch someone in the face because you do not agree with them, the majority of people posting their opinions are in favor of Emmy coming in the house. Your grandparents probably took Emmy because you are nothing but a little spoiled brat who did not want to care for her anymore, you should be ashamed of yourself!!! suck on that! and do yourself and everyone a favor, don't get anymore animals, they don't deserve you.

HAHA spoiled yes.. but I absolutely love animals. You are soo quick to judge if you knew the family you wouldn't be saying things like this. Thats whats wrong with the world these days. My family moved and we couldn't keep emmy. My grandparents who have 10 acres took her and is caring for her. They love her. I'm not ashamed if anything you should be ashamed of yourself for being so quick to judge. I find an animal I keep it, or i find someone who wants an animal i have NEVER taken an animal to the spca. I would rather care for the animal and give it love and food or give it to someone who will love it and take care of it rather than taking the chance of it being put down at a shelter. I bottle fed my cat for weeks. I found him on the side of the road with such a bad respitory infection i spent hundreds of dollars to get his health up. He is as healthy as ever and is loving life. I saved my dog and two others from a man who kept them in a cage big enough for one dog with a dog box fit for one. I TOOK THEM ALL IN! I couldn't tell you how many animals ive saved and helped get a good home. go ahead judge again.

First, learn to spell...."know" and "no" mean two different things.

If they can't provide for a pet properly, then they should never have gotten one in the first place. This is what really irks me with people.....they don't take the time to research the breed or the life long costs of caring for a pet no matter what type of pet it is. They get the pet on a whim and when they either can't afford it or the pet becomes ill or in this case old and arthritic, they can't provide the proper shelter and veterinary care for it and the pet ends up miserable, neglected or left to die. I too, would like to know just how often "Emmy" is seen at the vet and if she is on medicine for her arthritis and if it is given consistently.

The garage isn't cold? Do you know for certain that the garage is heated? And your stating that "Emmy" is not sick? Hello........she has arthritis! I don't know how old you are, but I hope that some day you get arthritis really bad so you know just how horrible it feels. Then move yourself into garage during a Pennsylvania and see how long it takes you to whine and cry then.

I feel sorry for Emmy why do people think its a good life just to be housed and fed in a dog house no matter how well built. A dog is a companion animal key word is companion. How would you like to be a member of a family who builds you a little place out behind their house and just come out once or twice a day to feed and water you. You have no other contact with the family. Do you think this would be a great life? So many people get a dog or other pet at Christmas. Remember a pet is a life time committment. Maybe when Jess could no longer keep her and would have placed her with a family who would have taken her into their home instead of letting her live what he calls a dogs life she wouldnt be facing this in her old age.
