Chico has gone to hell in a hand basket. What was once a nice little town has become infested w/ derelicts. I have never seen such a nice place fall so far, so fast. It sucks for all the upstanding citizens that have to tolerate all of the violence, and non-sense. Perhaps priorities need to change at the top, and a stronger emphasis needs to be placed on restoring safety in Chico.

Yes, a slap om the hand alwaysworks for stabbing (isn't that an attempt at murder), illegal encampment, and I am sure if they took a look, illegal drug paraphenalia and stollen goods, but you know Chico's attitude,'whatever'.

It is Riparian Habitat.....it is ALSO a place where homeless people camp....the two are not mutally exclusive. why would you think they were?.....You probably think all those homeless people ought to go home to thier houses are pay for a hotel rather sleeping in the woods, right? Where would you suggest they sleep?

Yes, Chico used to be a nice small town, in the eighties before the Realtors who wanted to make their fortune got on the city council. They were for growth and let every one build everything. For years before that the people on the council were "well-managed very slow growth" The people in Chico wanted to keep the town small and preserve the lands around it. But even then there were homeless people living in the Riparian Habitat. They caused little trouble back in those days. But along with the growth the gang elements came to town and the homeless came in higher numbers. It's too bad the people with a brains didn't quash the Realtors back then It's not that I think there should have been no growth (although I would have loved that) but it should have been done with an eye toward Chico staying small. Even the downtown city park which was once beautiful is now ugly. It all sucks!

Very interesting. The Pre- 1990's is the way I personally would like to remember Chico. There were no doubts some problems, but not on the scale like what we see today. Many locals used to warn about the future of Chico. The outlook for many Chico natives was a grim one. Now it looks like we have arrived (maybe sooner than expected). Looks like they were spot on w/ their predictions. If you care about Chico, and you remember the good old days then it's easy to admit, " it really does suck."

Crime and gangs will infest every previously quiet American town or city. Drugs drive it. Libs, including one at the E/R, write columns about how Chico is "too white" and needs diversity. But whose diversity? Gang diversity? Or, how about decent people of all colors getting together and shunning criminals?

Not to defend the guy but who knows what the guy did you got stabbed. So it could have been self defense.

I hated working at 7-11 downtown because these scum homeless people would come in and smell up the place and pay with change that was so dirty it was always stuck together and wouldn't even break apart when it hit the counter.

Don't get me wrong there are homeless people who need help and fallen on hard times. But most of the ones downtown are lifers who do not want help. They can't go to shelters because they will not give up there drugs or steel reserve. A few years back there was a whole new gang of punk kids who came to chico. They kept the girls knocked up so people will give them more money. Then they would get help from the state and get a apt and they would keep it till they could change to a pobox then get themselves tossed out or they would never live in it at all.

Do not give these people money. They stay here and come here as far as New york because they are told people are soft here. None of the ones down there when I was working at 7-11 came from any where around here. Most of them all had east coast id's.

If you want to support homeless cause then give the money to the jesus center where it will go to people who won't buy drugs with it. Dont fall for there scams of puppies and the girls being pregnant. They some how find puppies all the time and use them to make people feel sorry for them. The girls keep getting knocked up on purpose and they also use balls to make themselves look it so you will give them cash. Then they buy hard core drugs and use it in front of kids.

I have had to call the cops over and over because they would corner people outside and pretty much force them in a nice way to give them money. The cops would tell me to watch them because some had aids too... and hell they pass the girls around like they are on a basketball court.

Again this sounds harsh and I hate to see someone homeless who truly wants help and just had bad luck or something but most of these people are not that and it got to a point the stuff they were doing didn't even shock me anymore. So again do not give them money. They have outlets and donate there. If they are the ones who want and need help and can follow simple rules they will get it. These bad ones which are the ones we mostly see only buy drugs and beer all day long.

Kinda sad when you work for eight hours and you have to cut someone off from buying beer because they have already had 4 40oz bottles of steel reserve and you see them drink it across the street and its only 3 hours into your shift.

I remember a time I was eating at a restaurant near West Sacramento Ave (back when it was still safe). So I saw this poor homeless man begging for food outside. Naturally I felt bad because I was chowing down, and here this poor guy out in the cold who was starving. I didn't have a lot of money, so I got a to-go box, and filled it w/ some food. So I walk outside, and hand him the box, and a dollar. I get in my car, and look over. The jerk tossed the food in the trash, and headed for Safeway. Finally he comes out the door with a 40oz Mickeys. That was it for me. No more. This is what many of these guys do, and this is the reason many are in this position in the first place.

It's all those dang realtors and college students who caused this mess. I mean, we all know how normal all those "Chicoians" are in the first place.

Please spare us the "I remember when..." speeches and focus on the present issues. Come up with ideas that will work in the NOW, rather than focus on the past and how it used to be.

This is the second time Randy McMillan has been stabbed, the first was two years ago in Chico. Randy recently left Arizona due to Warrants for his arrest (he spent 5 days in Jail in Az in Sept 09) He has 9 children that have all been put up for adoption due to his and his girlfriends excessive drug use. This is not a surprise to those who know him and if this is really a random act of violence we would all be shocked.
Cant he stay out of trouble!

Randy and his girlfriend (stab victim) get over $900 a month from social security. They spend it all on drugs within days of getting it, then they live like bums.

One more thing, Randy's in the hospital telling people that he lied to the police about being asleep when he was attacked. He wasnt asleep, he confronted these guys and lied about it. He states they stole all his stuff, he didnt own anything except for what was donated to him a few weeks ago from a shelter. I feel bad that he's bothering your town. Dont be surprised if they get pregnant again trying to get state assistance. The baby will be highly addicted to drugs and will end up in the system. Cant someone get them fixed?

I don't care where they sleep. It's the abuse and squallar that I object to. They are where they want to be so yeah.. send them to their home towns. They are here because people THINK they need help... HA! most homeless people are playing the public...

Until the mentally ill and substance abusers get the help they need there is no hope for these types of people. AND 9 KIDS???? Are you kidding me? Please somebody GET THEM FIXED so they and their (probably drug addicted too) kids aren't a drain on the system. Poor babies born into this mess. AND where is CPS to protect the little ones?

California had the best Mental Hospitals in the Nation until Ronnie Regan decided to Close the State Hospitals and send the mentally ill back to their home counties using the "Freedom of Choice" as an excuse. Then DID NOT FUND the counties that were already overwhelmed with mentally ill people. That's when the Mentally Ill became a problem in the Homeless community. They are just targets for the dopers & thieves.

The Mental Health issue was FIXED but the Republicans and Ronald Regan Broke it! Then he went to Washington and started the decline in deregulations and the Trickle Down system... How do you like what Trickled down???
