Interesting. I've never had a problem figuring out where I was -- even before GPS systems became available -- but deciding what to *do* about being wherever I was? Different kettle of fish entirely.
Cool column, though.

T he cure for nostalgia is to read history, and the cure for holiday sentimentality is to listen for 25 minutes to an old friend telling you in a deep, mournful voice how desolate his life feels to him right ...

Another Garrison Keillor yada-yada colum that is all words that say nothing. The simple minded though will continue to support him and since there is a over aboundance of them, his worthless tripe will continue on. Yet when he passes on, there might be a blurb about him on Wikepedia. But in time he will fade into oblivian
as he really has nothing to say that would make future generations want to remember him. |

Cheap-shot sure knows how to describe him/herself. Those of us who read this column enjoy the images created on the page. While Mr. K. tries to contain the negativity of his friend with positive action, CS applauds the negativity and illustrates it very well. I guess we all need to be good at something.

Well, Cheap Shot, why do you read GK if you don't enjoy his columns? I find him amusing ever since I read Prairie Home being raised Lutheran on the East Coast. So true... so true... LOL

Ah, Cheap Shot..........you miss the point of the columns. It's to give us a glimpse of how life changes and remains the same. Sure it's nostalgia; don't read them if you dislike a journey in time.
Now, just reading this one made me think.....I remember a trip in an old wood paneled station wagon across the desert just after the end of the war with a funny bag on the outside of the radiator. Windows open, air full of dust, stopping at the Grand Canyon, picking up petrified wood, listening to my parents fight over who did what wrong. Camping out, my soldier father waking up with a scream for no reason I could see, he just did. And we rode all across the country back to a farm in upper New York state. I haven't thought about that in years. I was only four. Keep the columns coming, I say. Future generations WILL read this man's writing for a look at how how life was, yet changes. Try reading his books, they are priceless and beloved by my parent's generation mostly. Because when you're living through it, it's not that funny says my mother. |

Cheapshot....at least Mr Keillor can spell correctly.

Roadgeek, LOL, glad you caught that...you made my day |

Lovely! CS...widen your horizons...everything doesn't need to be an earthshaking commentary on our times that moves people to change the world, cure an injustices. Its wonderful to write something that just makes us smile.

keillor has become my favorite columnist and i look forward to his viewpoint every sunday. his style of reflection strikes a universal chord in us all. more often than not he shows how joyful life is. in some ways it's very Christ like.

If Keillor had his way we'd all be reading by candlelight and driving horse-drawn buggy's - because, ya' know, it was all so much simpler then... Gak

simple minded = simple-minded(generally hyphenated)
aboundance = abundance Wikepedia = Wikipedia oblivian = oblivion buggy's = buggies ya' know ='ya know (shortened form of what'ya know) Besides writing great columns, Keillor knows how to spell. |
|
Given that a big part of this column was about how much he likes GPS, I'm not sure how you reached this conclusion. |

Is the following spelled correctly? W-h-o c-a-r-e-s-? |

Because you're feeling lost, alone, alienated, depressed and isolated there can be only one answer, especially true when you're near the environs of the great Mississippi River...you need to get "the confidence man."
And didn't Cairo used to be so great. |

Damn good story! Garrison takes us up and down, while giving insight to the meaning of "the trip".
