If you have are getting treatment from Dekalb dental group, you may have experienced this phenomenon. You will get an estimate of what the insurance covers, please call your insurance first because you will end up paying what you did not bargain for. Secondly, if they give a diagnosis claiming you have gum disease, seek a second opinion. Two people that I know of have done that only to find that they did not have anything like that. You may just save yourself some money.

I will never go back to Dekalb Dental! I had to go three days in a row and pay $600 at the time of services because they refuse to do any payment plans. Also every day I went they found a 'new' cavity that had to be filled. Shouldn't they catch all those the first day during the xrays and examination? I was told I was lucky they found it now because they have had it happen before where they didn't catch a cavity and then had to perform a root canal. Being told that was not very comforting! I will be getting a second opinion on my gum disease.

I too was one of their "suckers" about 2 years ago. not only did I have 3 "cavities" that needed to be filled I was also told that I needed a deep gum cleaning. With the work that was done to me and my kids(a few more cavity fillings) I believe they scammed nearly $1000 from me. After all that mess I decided to go back to our original dentist who told me to always ask for a second opinion before getting anything done and there was no reason to do a deep gum cleaning, my gums had always looked healthy.

I found this topic forum on the internet and was glad to see that others shared the same experiences at Dekalb Dental Group. I am only 22 years old and never had cavitie in my adult teeth until 2 years ago. I went in for my normal cleaning and BAM I had 8 all of the sudden. How does that happen?? I have been going to DDG for about 4 years and since I started its seem the place has gotten huge and really tries to push everyone through, and MAKE LOTS OF MONEY OFF OF YOU. I would never recommend this place to anyone ever.

Avoid this dentist!!! They wanted to do four crowns and replace all of the fillings that I got when I was a child. The suggested treatment plan was over $2500. I went to another local dentist, after x-rays and a cleaning they said my teeth were fine and we will see you in six months.

I also was given an estimate for 5 crowns and they did a cancer screening and a deep root cleaning - even though I floss EVERYDAY and have never had any problems! I have great dental insurance but of course I had to pay what the balance was estimated at in cash up front. I even asked them, "who in their right mind would go to the dentist knowing that they would probably have to pay hundreds of dollars that day?" They won't let you pay monthly and give you a credit card application. I went back to my old dentist that doesn't speak English well. I'm not so offended by our lack of communication since she'll let me make payments. I only wish I would have seen this site earlier. I am going to send this site to Consumer Affairs and other watchdog agencies.

I decided to change dentists after the hygenist at DeKalb Dental Group told me that I had to get my teeth cleaned every three months, even though my insurance would only pay for a cleaning every 6 months. When I told the hygenist I couldn't afford to pick up this extra cost ($150 every six months or $300 a year), she told me I would have to sign a document stating I was "refusing treatment." That sounded pretty threatening to me. I mean, what would signing such a document mean? If I signed such a statement, would my insurance refuse to cover future treatments for gum disease, etc?

I decided in April 2007 to seek the services of another dentist in the area.

However, I learned in June 2007 that before I could go to the new dentist, I needed to provide him with my old dental records, which DDG didn't want to release because they said I still owed them $233, a balance I wasn't even aware I owed! I found this very strange news. Every time I've gone to DDG, I have asked what I owed, the woman behind the counter has run my credit card, and I have assumed my account balance was clear. Yet the fellow I spoke with at DDG said the $233 was a debt I accrued back in December 2006 for a deep cleaning that my insurance wouldn't cover. This was over six months ago, but I was only learning of the balance in June 2007, after I'd requested that my records be transferred to my new dentist.

I am still going back through my records in order to sort through this mess, but what it comes down to is that DDG keeps this running tab, and you never really know from visit to visit what your actual balance is. It's always in process.

I would be happy to support any effort at investigating this group's accounting practices. My email is ricbonnie@comcast.net

Definitely stay away from DeKalb Dental Group. They pulled that gum disease thing with me, too. I then went for a second opinion and was told there was nothing wrong with my gums that using "Sensodyne" toothpaste wouldn't cure. In addition, for the SECOND time they took a panorex x-ray on my son for which I had to pay $75 because my insurance only covers this type of x-ray every 36 months. Why they didn't ask ME before they took this x-ray is a mystery. I can't believe this dental office is still in practice. They are deceptive and unethical! I will also be posting a complaint to www.consumeraffairs.com .

Wow. ALL of this sounds like the SAME experience my husband had. They did some acid wash thing that the insurance didn't cover, poked his gums with needles, told him he needed 3 crowns, he needed to replace ALL his old fillings, said he had gum disease and that he also needed some expensive deep cleaning treatment. SAME STORY!! My husband only went there for a checkup and a cleaning...and they never did clean his teeth!! The estimated bill was close to $3000 for all this work to be done. I forgot to mention that we have always gone to the dentist regularly and our other dentist has never done these things or brought this up. And I trust him (our insurance changed that's why we had to go to DDG). When I called the receptionist lied to me and said my husband signed some agreement saying he'd have that acid cleaning done...my hubby said he didn't sign ANYTHING. I called back and fortunately talked to the other receptionist and she refunded the $$...but not without making me feel guilty.

DO NOT GO HERE!!! THEY ARE SCAM ARTISTS! I'm so glad I found this site. Thanks for all your stories...it has helped to hear we weren't the only ones!

I am so glad I found this website before continuing treatment! I went in for a routine check-up and cleaning today and they told me my I had the beginnings of gum disease and would need a deep cleaning that would cost $600 out of my pocket and would need to go two separate times. As I was bombarded with this information, I became visibly upset and they kept insisting I needed it done or my gums would receed. Then they didn't even clean my teeth today. I like to think I take care of my teeth and believe I will be getting a second opinion and not going back. The only reason I went in the first place because it was the only dentist my insurance covered.

I went to Doctor Wine after just moving to the area, and I experienced the same thing described in all these other complaints. My husband and I and our three children have seen the same dentist for the past 20 years, in Geneva, Il. We go every six months , rain or shine, with no major problems and no cavities for 4 out of 5 of the family. THEN WE GO TO DR. WINE AND BOOM IN ONE VISIT ALL OF A SUDDEN I HAVE 2 CAVITIES (NEVER HAD ONE IN 35 YEARS) BUT SHE DIDN'T KNOW THE EXTENT UNTIL SHE DRILLED ME OPEN! I HAD NEVER HEARD OF THIS. THAN SHE SAID 2 OF MY KIDS HAD CAVITIES (THEY HAD NEVER HAD THEM BEFORE, AND THEY NEEDED SEALANTS. AND MY THIRD SON SHE SAID NEEDED TWO ROOT CANALS AND CROWNS! I WAS SHOCKED BUT THEY TOLD ME MY INSURANCE WOULD PAY MOST OF IT AND MY SHARE WOULD BE MINIMAL. SO BEGAN TWO MONTHS OF TAKING THE KIDS IN. FINALLY SHE TOLD ME WE HAD USED ALL INSURANCE FOR THE YEAR AND I OWED 2200 DOLLARS BECAUSE MY INSURANCE CLAIMED THAT THERE PRICES WERE "ABOVE AND BEYOND THE NORM" THEN THEY DEMANDED I PAY IN FULL. I PUT 1200 ON A CREDIT CARD AND SAID I WOULD HAVE TO PAY THE OTHER A LITTLE AT A TIME. i NEVER EVEN GOT MY WORK DONE, BUT OUT OF CURIOUSITY I WENT TO MY OLD DENTIST AND LOW AND BEHOLD, I DIDN'T HAVE ANY CAVITIES AND WHEN SHE LOOKD AT MY KIDS RECORDS SHE TOLD ME THERE WAS NO WAY THAT THAT MUCH DAMAGE HAD OCCURED IN SUCH A SHORT TIME. SO BEWARE OF DEKALB COUNTY DENTISTS AND DOCTORS, I FOR ONE AM GOING TO STICK TO MY KANE COUNTY DOCS.

I recently experienced similar "questionable practices" here. Preface: as a 5 year old child, I suffered traumatic dental abuse from a dentist who strapped me into his chair while he drilled my teeth (no novocaine) while he smoked a cigar with ashes falling into my mouth. My fears of dentistry carried through my adulthood until I recently HAD to see a dentist due to cavities. Dekalb Dental insisted on my first going through their dental hygenist and make it mandatory to submit to the a mouth cancer screening- NOT covered by dental insurance. To make a long story short, I was referred to a very expensive periodontist (out of plan). Dekalb Dental never touched my caviites (nor did the perio). A perio tech who once worked at DDG told me they regularly have "meetings" to have staff push all kinds of treatments to run up your bill. No doubt.

I went to Dekalb dental group about a month ago because of a severly cracked tooth and another one that was a cavity. They did every kind of test imaginable that my insurance covered. Every test I got they would say oh your insurance covers this. After 2 hours, they told me that my 2 teeth could be saved and would need root canal therapy (what?). They wanted to do this that day. I had asked how much I would have to pay and they proceeded to tell me my portion would be $650.00 which would need to be paid that day. I told them I could not afford that and they tried to get me on their patient program. I told them I would have to think about this and call them back. I called my dentist that I normally go to and she got me in right away. I had told her what these people had said to me and after looking at my 2 teeth, she said that there was no way that they could be saved and did not know what these people are talking about. My dentist also discovered that these 2 teeth were infected and had to take my teeth out right away. I will never go back to these people. I wanted to find someone who was close but I guess it pays to make a 40 minute drive to get the right diagnosis and care. From now on, I will be making that drive no matter what. I help this helps other people. Always get a second opinion. I'm glad I did. It saved me 200.00. The only thing I had to pay for was the laughing gas and novicane which my insurance does not cover which cost 400.00 but was well worth it!!!!!
