This is a very dangerous spot and I know of a family of 5 who almost lost their lives in the exact same spot. Something needs to be done about this, it should not be left up to the victims family to do it. The county should step in and put up the signs especially with it being directly behind the middle school and right next to a park. The safety of our children are at stake here and I think it deserves at least that much attention.

I agree with Debra's post above this is very dangerous and deceiving area. I have personally broken my foot in the exact same area playing with my friends children three years before the two girls drowned. Tonight two more young girls have disappeared and believe to be drown while sleding close to the river. This area is close to areas where people congregate and great caution should be used.

Things are being done just aparently not in enough time. There is a video coming out and signs are in the design process. The river saftey commitee is working on this. But how many more parents are going to leave there children unattended and near the muskegon? How many more have to be lost? Its not just enough to put signs and educate the risks and dangers of the river. The parents need a reality check, when are they going to care?

I have to agree with you. It is not enough to put signs up, or educate them on the river safety. It is the parents responsibility to watch their children and to oversee the activities in which they are involved in. It is not the river committe itself that is going to save a life, but education is a step in the right direction. It is also not enough to put a sign up, people have to read them, understand them and CARE enough to abide by them.

I agree with debra and i believe that the town itself needs to do something, about this river!!! big rapids township is very aware of the dangers and still there has been no efforts to fence off the surrounding areas behind the middle school and the park! the number one thing that needs to be done is to fence off the areas! this will prevent children easy access to the river.I also am a parent of a drowning victim, and i am appauled at the statement above about parent responsability.Accidents happen and anyone who has had small children are aware that children can escape sight of parents, in the blink of an eye.It is the responsability to take care of our children as parents, indeed, however, accidents do happen. It is a misfortune in life, and children can escape from site of their parents, it is sickening to hear that their is still so much ignorance in this world, as to place blame on a parent who is already greiveing so much, from their misfortune, and to make a biast statement, such as it is the fault of the parent!!!! lets place blame where it lies, if any, the county who refuses to fence off these dangerous areas, as to save a little money! If need b, lets take up donations to get this problem taken care of!

Comment to the below. I just read about the little boy who just drowned in the river. While I agree that fence do need to be put up. Its the residence that need to put this in action...most of the big rapids residence are complaining that it's going to ruin the view (saveing a life is more important than a view) I don't think people were trying to be unsenstive about the parents responsibility...the truth simply is accidents do happen but it's the parents job to prevent them. So I think all parents who are concerned about their childs safety along any body of water need to patition to have fences put up. More lives should not have to be lost in the river because they are waiting for the county to do something about it. I do not understand how parents can let their child out of their sight...I don not have a child full time s I do not understand and` I'm sure the people who posted those comments do not either. I do work at a daycare and i have twelve three yrs olds to watch by myself outside and I've learned to keep them all in my sights and not let them go stray. Parents just need to remember that because a place feels safe...it doesn't mean it is safe. It's the parents job to survey the danger and their ability to see and keep track of their children. There are ohter parks that they can go to...so that they can avoid these dangers.

well those two girls were my best friends and their mother did nothing but try her hardest to keep her kids safe i remember that at one point she wouldn't let them come outside because she was afraid of what could happen and i really don't appreciate all of the "shes dumb" and all that because yall on the outside lookin in and what if that happened to you? Try being a lil bit more considerate to others and their loses...
their gone but never forgotten

Danielle,
Sorry for your loss. Accidents happen and nobody should point a finger at that mother. Kids that age should be able to go to a park (the only decent one around) and not have to be at risk for drowning. The little boy who died was two,Will, so he wasn't taking a risk, he wandered away from his Grampa and ended up in the river. There should be a fence there to keep toddlers out, they all get away from us for a second or two and at that park those seconds take lives. For all those who say "The parents need to watch their kids". I agree 100 percent, but we know that there are parents that don't, so are we just going to sit back and say "Sorry that you died, kid. Your parents should have watched you." We need to protect them and put a fence up!!!!
