10 things about Emmy-winning dog trainer Cesar Millan

As founder of the Dog Psychology Center, a rehabilitation facility in south central Los Angeles for troubled dogs, Millan is famous for turning the most problematic pooch into a good citizen -- which means one who doesn't bite or pull at the leash or misbehave. Dogs, he says, are pack animals who need a pack leader. Once an owner decides to be leader of the pack, the dog will become what Millan calls "calm-submissive" and well-behaved.

I like Cesar Millan's approach. It is simple, effective and easy to understand.

Cesar is one cool fu**er. I dig how he stands over the meanest dog and that dog cowards down to him. Just strap a muzzle on that dog and lean over him.. in time he will know who the alpha is. Today I had several dogs get a little to close to me. I sense when a dog is about to get all hostile on me but in general I have love for the animals.

I like Cesar's approach.

Instead of trying to get the dog to act like a person, he gets the people to understand the basics of dog behavior.

I love it that he pushes for people to walk their dog and spending quality time with them instead of treating them like so much collected furniture or belongings.

I don't know but there is something about him I just can't put my finger on. He makes it sound so simple but its not I have have 3 dogs and we do not have the results as he describes it should be. But he is making a fortune.

Also I love Cesar. After all the comments about Hispanics being dogfighters,etc. I know that's not true. but I am glad about his successes for the dogs most of all.

Training a dog isn't really that much different than raising a child. YOU are in charge, YOU make the rules and you must be consistent.

Best thing, I've found, is to locate a good obedience school instructor, attend ALL the classes with your dog (you'll see, at week #6 your dog will not want to cooperate.....don't ask,
I don't know why but they probably figure it's just being redundant. Dogs need that: repeating lessons during the week until the next session).

Hope I don't offend anyone - I'm not comparing a child to a dog. However, the point remains the same: rules and being consistent.

I've had many dogs - most from people who no longer wanted them or couldn't take proper care of them. Some were wild-like in their actions;
you don't need a muzzle, you just need to let them know you're in charge; tone of voice let's them know you mean business. No hitting, no
yanking, no yelling .........just your normal 'inside' voice will be fine.

Try it.....you'll have a 'pal' for a long time.

As a dog trainer alot of his methods are'nt anything new. He just happens to exert a positive TV friendly energy. His "dominantion" tricks can cost you a lot of blood over time with different dogs. But his mission statement is soild: I rehabilitate Dogs and Train people. Most people like my wife Treat a Dog like a kid, And my Schnauzer dominates her in the sense that he expells bad habits and behavoir only around her. I've never struck my dogs, but they always know who the pack leader is. Most people have no clue about dog behavoir. Its just not important for them to learn. They'd just rather yell at their pets or act scared of dogs. Ceasar Milan is the man. Hail Ceasar

Sounds like you are jealous of his training skills and success.

I've trained dogs for almost as long. However, I trained them overall for high performance field trial, and tracking for police. I've worked with a variety of hunting and hound breeds but have had plenty of side clients for just general problems and obedience. Caesar is good at what he does but trust me he is no dog whisper. Myself and many more that I know can not only fix behavorial issues with dogs but get them to do many more complex task then to stop chewing a house shoe. I know that sounds mean, but he's commercialized and really it's the stupidity of the owners that makes him look so smart.
