Jun 10, 2011 Full story: Los Angeles Times 85

The Department of Veterans Affairs has misused large portions of its campus on L.A.'s Westside and has failed to provide adequate housing and treatment for homeless veterans, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday by veterans advocates and lawyers.

There are thousands of homeless Vets who served in wars going back to WW2, sleeping on streets and in parks all over America. Do you think they would even get us trailers to live in like they do for storm victims? Fat chance.

The VA has programs for homeless vets. They even put them up at shelters. I know, I was an administrative officer who provided tokens for bus fare to shelters. It may be a temporary shelter but at least it is something. Most vets don't like the rules at these places and that is why they don't like to go. The VA is not the only program that provides for the homeless so I would not put the blame there. There is a protocol for homeless people and not everyone is eligible. Anyone who has been homeless since WW2 and still sleeping on the streets needs some serious counseling. Nothing in this world is free and you have to have the drive to WANT to do something, no matter what the defeat. If you survived a war, you have the drive, so use it!

This may not be in your state, but it shows SOMETHING for the homeless and programs available. You have got to have the need and the drive to find these programs available. One website has training manuals available. Other sites include college manuals that are available for reading and reference. The GI bill paid my way through school back in the 70's and 80's. I took full advantage but the old GI bill is only good for 10 years. Check with the VFW organizations, Purple Heart, and AMVETS organizations. Social workers in the VA system are NOT properly trained to deal with homeless veterans. Stay in touch with other vets to find out how they are surviving and what they are doing to feed their families.
I was homeless also for a while until I pulled my act together, stopped feeling sorry for myself and applied for work at the post office where they give veterans points for job priority. The VA has jobs for file clerks which is a job to start with and work up from there. I started as a clerk typist and worked up to administrative asst. I moved from NY to CA to find a job. I had no help from family or friends but other vets I knew, helped me find a job. WHERE THERE IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY.

Obviously, you have computer skills and even access to a computer. If you are looking for a 'FREE HANDOUT' there is no such thing, so stop complaining and do something about your life. You have a command for the English language and from the looks of it, you know how to use it. SO USE IT!

Here is another story about what the VA is TRYING to do about homeless vets. Maybe you can get in touch with this organization to see if they can help you. There is HELP out there, you just have to know where to look and do something about it. This may not be in your city but if I were in your shoes and homeless, I would check this out and move if I had to...to survive!

The VA does not recognize homelessness resulting from economic problems only for purposes of assisting with independent housing. It only recognizes homelessness as the result of substance abuse and/or mental health issues. The result is that many veterans assume and/or labeled as having these problems out of necessity so that they can receive housing assistance. This should be corrected. At the same time, the VA and the nation refuses to realize that the high rate of homelessness amongst veterans, especially Vietnam Veterans, is a result of actual discrimination promulgated against them by private and governmental bodies through laws and custom (affirmative action)(feminism). Corporations, the government, and many other private entities "black listed" returning Vietnam Veterans causing much economic hardship. This on top of that affirmative action and feminism that further exacerbated the same. George Washington warned the nation in words to the affect that if the nations mistreated it's veterans, the nation would have great difficulty in finding men willing and able to defend the nation. The nations DID abuse Vietnam Veterans and subsequent veterans. Guess what? The both the relative and absolute number of American men willing and able to defend the USA through military service has declined significantly since the war in Vietnam. We had a saying in Vietnam: "What goes around. Comes around!"

"This on top of that affirmative action and feminism that further exacerbated the same.:"
Well this affirmative action has been dead for quite some time. I don't get this 'feminism' thing. There are female vets. They are effected also.
I know it was a 'fear' to hire the Viet Nam vet because they were considered 'crazy'. Viet Nam vets went through a VER TOUGH TIME, especially when their country did now 'welcome' them home and still go through a mental rough time but these are the 'horrors' of war. As far as the 'economic' issue, this may be true but there are jobs out there! It may be at burger king or something like that, but you have to start somewhere, if you WANT a paycheck and I know people who work 2 and 3 jobs but that is the way of the world. What would the VA have to do with downsizing and homelessness? I think the Viet Nam thing 'fear' is over with and now the returning vets are to be feared for the insane military action they have seen. The economic downsizing effects us all, not just vets. There are still men and women who are willing to defend this country for the freedoms we enjoy today. Many of them join the military because of the economic problems they face in their future but at least when they return home (if they do), they understand more, fight for their rights as a vet, and can't and won't give up! Therein, lies the backbone.

The homeless shelters are disgusting, filled with bed bugs and people plagued with psychiatric and other serious health issues. We lay our lives on the line for America, and yet you can't even put us in a stinking used trailer where we could have even a smidgen of privacy and self worth. Shame on America.

But it was OK with you that we veterans handed out our blood for free, and maybe a few limbs to go with it?

Well it wasn't your blood or limbs obviously! Your still in one piece, WITH ACCESS TO A COMPUTER, COMPUTER SKILLS AND KNOW HOW TO SPEAK ENGLISH, SO YOU HAVE AN EDGE HERE. There are enough computer links out there where they get people to bite for free so go for it. Craig s list is free. See how's shoulder you can cry on there!
You forget, I am a veteran also and I have seen my share of horror. I fought to get my disability, I fought to get medicare, I fought to get the medical treatment that I needed and I am still fighting because I cannot walk. I have a rod in my back and a cadaver bone in my neck. I live in pain constantly and I can no longer get steroid shots because I have reached my max. There's my blood and limbs for you.

Here' something for you. People are still fighting for veterans but not the ones who feel AMERICA OWES THEM A FREE TRAILER TO LIVE IN. GET REAL HERE MAN! You insult the intelligence of fellow veterans who need jobs, training skills and families to feed.

How dare you think YOU SHOULD BE ENTITLED TO LIVE IN A TRAILER FOR FREE BECAUSE YOU ARE A DISPLACED VETERAN!

From what I read here, you have obviously been in a shelter but I guess policing the area where you sleep is out of the question. I had a homeless shelter put me in a hotel that was filled with cockroaches and with what ever money I had, I bought bombs to kills the bugs and lived there bug free for two weeks. When my grant was up, I had to force myself on friends I worked with. Where there is a WILL THERE IS A WAY!

You wanna know something? NO American should ever have to sleep in their cars or on the street. We give BILLIONS away in foreign aid, and to fight other people's battles, but many of our own citizens don't even a roof over their heads at night. It is a damn disgrace.

How do you know that I am still in one piece? I almost died twice on the battlefield, and came back in a lot worse shape than when I left. If it wasn't for free computer access at libraries, I wouldn't be on here. NO American veteran should have to FIGHT to get disability or a roof over our head. We did more than our share of fighting over there, thank you.

Just give me a metal box somewhere out in the desert, where I can close my door at night and not worry about some madman attacking me in my sleep, or catching some disease from the guy in the next bed. Aren't 4 bullet holes and 6 transfusions enough to earn me just one little spot on American soil?

You need to get your ass to work and stop waiting for a handout, telling anyone who will listen how bad you've got it. We have guys like you on the corner of every street light begging for money. Many wouldn't take a job if offered one.

I am also a vet and been working for 42 years.
