Lesli Gooch, candidate for Congress, worked as a paid lobbyist for indicted real estate developer Jeffrey Burum, according to official lobbying records. A San Bernardino, California community action group expresses outrage and demands full disclosure by Gooch's campaign.

The San Bernardino Citizens For Public Integrity (SBCPI) expressed outrage today upon learning that Lesli Gooch, a candidate for California's 31st congressional seat, worked a registered Washington lobbyist for indicted developer Jeffrey Burum.

Burum, a Rancho Cucamonga housing developer, was indicted on 29 counts of bribery, extortion and misappropriation of public funds in 2011, along with a former San Bernardino County supervisor and two former chiefs of staff to local politicians.

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Gooch represented Burum as a registered Washington lobbyist at the Potomac Partners lobbying firm in 2008 and 2009. Gooch's lobbying firm collected $90,000 from Burum in 2008, and $40,000 in 2009.

"On behalf of my board, my members, volunteers, and neighbors, we are absolutely shocked and outraged, especially considering we are all very familiar with Jeffrey Burum's indictment," SBCPI president Elsa Keeling said. "More than anything, this raises many questions. If Burum paid bribes on a land deal here in San Bernardino, what was he paying Lesli for back in Washington?"

Keeling has asked Maryanne Watson, chair of SBCPI's voter education committee, to contact Gooch's campaign to request all financial and communication records related to Gooch's lobbying for Burum.

"Anything short of full, immediate disclosure is unacceptable," Keeling said.

Even more odd than this news is that Gooch contributed $2,500 of her own money to Democrat Joe Baca all the way through the 2010 election cycle. Now she is running against him? OK.

Why does anyone care? Once she's elected she'll just take money for votes like all the congressmen and senators. Elect people that are regular joes, business owners, teachers and such. Then have them be term limited. Why can't we just do that instead of complaining about it.

San Bernardino Citizens For Public Integrity released the following statement Friday night:

“Yesterday, we thought we were doing the public a service by releasing information, verified by the Center for Responsive Politics, showing that Ms. Gooch had lobbied for Jeffrey Burum, the indicted real estate developer. Watching this scandal unfold has moved us from outrage to bewilderment. Within hours, the local Republican Party committee offered its endorsement of Ms. Gooch. While we question that wisdom and timing, Ms. Gooch’s aggressive response in today’s Los Angeles Times article shows us that instead of apologizing for her actions, she is going after voters and her opponents with increased vigor. We call on her to immediately withdraw from the race."

On March 27, DatSyn News published a video news story revealing that Lesli Gooch had worked as a paid Washington lobbyist for Jeffrey Burum, a real estate developer indicted on 29 public corruption counts including bribery, extortion and misappropriation of public funds. The information was revealed by the San Bernardino Citizens For Public Integrity and verified on OpenSecrets.org , a database of lobbying and campaign contributions run by the Center for Responsive Politics.

A day later, Gooch announced on her website that she had received the endorsement of the San Bernardino County Republican Party. Within a few hours, the Los Angeles Times ran a story, "GOP candidates battling to succeed Rep. Gary Miller”, saying that Gooch’s challenger, Dr. Paul Chabot, had called on Gooch to withdraw from the race. According to the Los Angeles Times article, "Gooch campaign spokesman Jeff Corless called Chabot's statement "sour grapes by a desperate candidate" who was angry because the county GOP backed Gooch's candidacy instead of his.”

According to your article/hit piece, Gooch last worked as a lobbyist for Barum in 2009 and he was indicted in 2011. You do not say what happened with the Barum case. You do not even allege, never mind present any evidence, that Gooch did anything illegal or unethical or that she knew Barum was doing or allegedly doing anything illegal when she represented Barum.

Politics is a contact sport. However, the cowards throwing mud behind this front group should step forward and throw the mud publicly.
