Doesnt matter how fast either of them were going - it will work out in the firefighter's benefit anyway.

What's even more dangerous is *if* they toss caution to the wind.

Seven years a (former) volunteer firefighter. During MPO driver training, one thing stressed upon and was a primary focus was the use of caution, ESPECIALLY when approaching intersections.

Don't allow the adrenaline rush of lights and sirens overpower common sense.

Just because you're racing to the scene of an emergency with the lights on, sirens blaring, and blowing air horns, doesn't mean everyone's gonna stop to let you get through and you should NEVER assume they will.

There's a lot less emergency vehicle crashes than school bus accidents.

I'm very saddened to see so many people ready to jump on Bethpage "VOLUNTEER" firefighters! These brave men "VOLUNTEER" Their time, For no pay and little thanks! They risk their lives while spending time away from the comforts of home and loved ones to protect people, many of whom they have never met before. I grew up in Bethpage, and will never forget many years ago when 3 of them perished in a fire at a pool store at Hemp. tpk and rte. 107, a Bethpage volunteer also perished at the Twin Towers on 9/11, Many of the children I went to school with's Fathers were volunteer firefighters and have since become firefighters themselves. I am proud to have made their aquaintance and can only wish that someday I will have the strength to be as brave as them! I salute the Hero's, you know who you are!

I agree that MANY firefighters do wonderful work. BUT, many are also morons who drive drink (and get away with it) have free Chief's SUV's (and for God's sakes, how many Chiefs are in ONE dept???) The Fire Dept's do get tax dollars for their equipment, TONS OF CASH for vacations, free liquor, free parties with sumptuous food, free use of their catering halls (NOT for the public, even though we pay for it!!)

Don't forget the volunteer firefighters get 10% off their property tax bill...that would save me over $2000

Then, every fall they bring out their shiny trucks blasting sirens like little boys, while going door to door begging for MORE cash. Very annoying to many of us.

Don't forget free clothing/gear/boots, and those very popular and expensive jackets with their name on it and "chief" written in script that enables them to get free food at the dli and pizzeria... and you get one of those free jackets every year.

I do plenty of volunteer work with disabled veterans and I get NOTHING for free, just the satisfaction of doing good for the heroes that keep us safe.

Stop whining about your "volunteerism" No one forced you to join this good 'ole boys club.

Lastly, try being black or another minority and getting in to this club. Sure.

AND DON'T FORGET THE M I L L I O N S of dollars WASTED on HUGE and unnecessary firehouses with equipment they don't need but they get paybacks from the manufacturers for buying them.

this is typical. Fire Fighters think they have the right to drive as reckless as the police do. Especially the young adolescents volenteering. Also they should blood test the volenteer fire figthers to see if they were drinking, and if the case proscute to the fullest!

It will never happen. When firefighters are pulled over for being drunk they get a ride home or back to the staionhouse...every time.

Dude STOP stealing the meds from the disabled vet you volunteer for.....you have no clue what your talking about. Why don't you go up to the F.H. in Huntington station and see the black and latino faces that volunteer. Members have to pay to use the hall. They go door to door selling chance books for fund raiser to buy those jackets and tee shirts it does not come out of tax dollars. There is no food establishment that gives free anything to the F.D. you need to get an education!
Hey Pete, I know 4 black guys that tried to join the Huntington FD and were not enthusiastically treated, and members do NOT have to pay to use the hall, and outsiders can't even PAY to use it (fact in Dix Hills and Centerport)

As for those jackets and t-shirts, every fireman gets one jacket FREE every year and I don't know about t-shirts.

Anyone with functioning eyes sees both firefighters AND cops getting free food, or heavily discounted food, at Rosa's pizzeria, DiRaimo's, and Giuseppe's near the HS firehouse.

As for the door-to-door begging every fall, if they check their list and they feel you haven't sent in your check by mail (or enough) then they come to your house with sirens blasting and lights flashing. They have been doing this for years at my parents' house.

It doesn't matter if you deny some of this, we the public know the truth.

FDNY are heroes. So are SOME vollies on LI, but the few give a VERY bad name to the rest.

THAT, my friend, is reality.

BTW Pete, we the public also notice those giant SUV's in the parking lots of the mall, or at a stadium, or at a bar, sometimes 50 miles from whatever town is emblazenod on them, and these vehicles are provided free of charge, which includes gas.

Guess who pays for those free vehicles?? We taxpayers do.

Just this morning I saw a Centereach Chief's SUV riding with his 3 kids on Rt. 110 in huntington

one last thing Pete, you do know that here on LI the firefighters get a 10% tax break on their property taxes, right??

Do you know of any other volunteers that get a huge savings like that? No, you don't . Because there aren't any. I do volunteer work with disabled kids at Thomas' school of horsemanship and all the expenses are paid for by ME, as it should be.

And unlike the firefighters, who have huge beautiful TV's/pool tables/etc. in the firehouses, we who volunteer have to pay for our own good times.

Perhaps it's different in PA, if that's where you're from.

I don't really care what happened, I know the person who was the victim. If they were responding to a call they should have been more astute to the dangers of the road. If they weren't and just dicking around we will find out and they will be dealt with as an example for all to see...

Bottom line if they were doing there job right they have nothing to worry about if there is fault, which I'm sure there is. There will be consequences. The "victim" as the called him was a young man who has his whole life ahead of him and just graduated college. I hope these people pay dearly for their mistake.

No I'm not from PA I live off melville Rd. and I was a member of HMFD so I know your full of it! we never got free food at the places you mentioned, Maybe they gave a discount to the Dept. but not individual members! The SUV's yes are paid by tax dollars and so is the gas but....that chief car is a mobil command post.Which carries multi band radio's fire and EMS gear which is necessary life saving equipment. Countless times these chiefs lend a hand at a scene of an accident while passing through another district. The person elected chief uses that vehicle with his/her kids in the car because it would take too much time to drive home and then respond, We in the fire service know how you and Newsday love to bash FD for response times. Again the fund drive which is voluntary you don't have to give. in HMFD dist they sell raffle tickets for the fair which is where we get the money for those jackets and tee shirts you hate, ask your dad he's a member.
I noticed you never commented about the tax breaks firefighters get, or the ridiculously overpriced firehouses LIers build with taxpayer money, or the beautiful hand carved wooden bars fully stocked with the best liquor in many LI firehouses...

check out the following link, on a website FOR FIREMEN, that explains why so many people are rightfully critical of LI firemen. Remember, LI firemen, NOT the NYFD!!

I see nothing wrong with giving a tax break to volunteer firefighters/EMTs. Does spending of taxpayer money need to be scrutinized and rationalized? Of course it should be.
However, there is a big difference between volunteering to give pony rides and being a volunteer FF/EMT. We NEED the FF/EMTs, we don't NEED pony rides.
If you were trapped in a burning house, would you rather see an over priced shiny fire truck coming up the road, or would you rather see special Ed trotting past the house on his pony?

Typical top heavy SUV; flipped over by the slightest impact. Sort of like a dead bug on its back. Ah, some must have their status symbols
