They're investigating the cause of the accident? Every accident like this has the same cause: someone went onto the train tracks when the gates were down. Trains can't chase you; they stay on the tracks. I don't understand why so many people fail to grasp this concept.
I mean, I'm sorry the man died, but there are few deaths that are more avoidable than being hit by a train.

Ditto to comment #1. I'm a cycling advocate with a long blogging career and even I tell people that trains can't stop or dodge, to triple check to make sure there are no trains coming and never ignore crossing signals. And one other thing, that styrofoam hat ain't gonna do diddly against a train, any more than it does against a SUV or large car.

Let me speculate, but I have a good idea what happened.

The victim was waiting for a train to pass. As soon as the train passed him going one direction, another train came in the opposite direction. He thought it was clear from the eastbounder, but got nailed by a westbounder. This seems to happen often and the RR has tried to adjust schedules to prevent it.

Then again, maybe he was text messaging, etc.

I was the first car at the tracks but did not see him crossing until it was too late. He did ignore the traffic signal because both gates came down about 3 minutes prior to him attempting to cross. It was a sad site and something I will probably never forget. But people have to realize that the train cannot stop. The last thing I saw was a navy blue hat fly off his head and land in front of my car. There were many people around who sad he was dead. I did not want to see what he looked like and was very frightened by the thought.

Nothing for the railroad to adjust, if the gates are DOWN you wait to cross.

Another moron that doesnít know when itís safe to cross. What does it take for people to learn?
Normally I find these things comical and cartoon like, but this was one of the rare days that I was riding the LIRR and was wondering what was taking so damn long and made me late. Special thanks goes to this idiot for inconveniencing thousands that day. What an idiot.

Usually nature has a way of weeding out the incredibly stupid and feeble minded before they get to adulthood. All the government intervention and Social Service programs has prevented their natural early deaths by shielding them from the real world. This just goes to show you that you can delay, but not stop the natural order of life. If the train did not get him he would have been killed heating up his hairspray in the microwave or by some other retarded action.

So often pedestrians and bicyclists seem to think the gates are not for them.

Actually, I'm pretty sure this wasn't an accident. I spoke to someone that works in 7-11 right next to the train, and I don't think this situation was lack of common sense or stupidity on the part of the cyclist. I think he was depressed, and that was the easy way out at the time.

And by the way, Bethpage is not dangerous or ghetto, whatsoever. Bethpage is a very safe area.

Oh no, Bethpage is very dangerous. We have drug dealers and gangs on every corner, prostitution has run amuck and we need iron bars on our doors and windows. Itís almost as bad as the Bronx.
