State's small airfields: many lost, some survive

It is one of those statements that seems to be true: Development pressure is causing smaller, general aviation airports in the state to disappear. Full Story

The nimby's in the Lordship section of Stratford are only concerned about getting more money from the value of their properties should the airport (Sikorsky) disappear. They use the excuse of noise, polution, and environmental problems, but it really is only about property value. There isn't anyone alive who lives in the Lordship section of Stratford who didn't move there knowing there was an airport. They bought because properties were cheap for beachfront property on Long Island Sound. So the trade off was cheap property on the Sound, and we'll try to get rid of the airport when we have enough like minded nimby's.

Those lousy Lordship people! Concerned about their homes? How could they! Who wouldn't want an airport at the end of their driveway!

How dare they oppose stealing land from their Town and lowering the tax base. Why, they should be happy that it won't cost Bridgeport a dime.

I mean, really! How selfish can you get?

Every single person moved in to their current homes long after the airport opened. They knew the airport was there, if it was that much of a problem they should have not bought the homes. I live near Rt.8, should I tell the state the road causes noise polution and call for it to be closed?

Maybe...are they going to expand Route 8 into your backyard?

Great feature article Frank.......there are many fans of the subject of old/abandoned airfields.

Monroe, CT had an airport back in the day that is now a cemetary.......a recent Post article told of some buried drums of suspected toxic waste discovered at that site.

There is a site called Abandoned and Little Known Airfields that features many subjects and photos.....in case you're interested. Sorry I can't post a direct link in this format.

Move the road! I see that the road and side have been marked to outline where the power/water/gas/sewer are. Next step, re-routing Main Street up and over the inlet! yay! I wonder if Marcia and Jezzy will sit in front of the caterpillar to stop them doing the work, that would be fun to watch.

As a Lordship resident, I believe it is the airport that gives our neighborhood a little character. If the radicals succeed in closing it, our families and friends will be driving through a heavy industrial complex with bland buildings and 24-hour motion and noise.

Ease it down a notch Jeze - nobody is proposing putting a taxiway in your front yard! I can't believe that moving Main Street over to an already empty space so we can avoid another tragedy could be fought so vehemently in the name of one's property values or peace and quiet.

New technology requires updated airfields. If we can make it a successful, safe operation, then that's a win-win for us and Bridgeport. The travelers will be leaving the gates and traveling through our town, buying some of our products, and spending their money in our region.

I love it here and support one of our greatest treasures, the airport!

It was a response to a stupid example.

Itsa, don't know if you're just looking for a reaction here, but US Air Express is not going to be flying into BDR anytime soon. The runways are too short for regional jets. Turboprops would work, but it's not as if airlines are busting down the doors to service Bridgeport. Not sure what land is allegedly being "stolen", as the city owns the land in question. It's a dead issue.

NOBODY showed up in Hartford 2 weeks ago to support Debicella's proposed bill to extend the moratorium on moving Main St. Apparently only a handful of people on blogs care...
