Just what really is the cost of a green bologna sandwich and stale bread? Sounds like the mayor is looking to line his personal pockets cleverly disguised as pay to stay. This idea could make sense in a county free of corruption. That rules Summit County totally out.
What in the hell are you talking about? Summit County Sheriff Alexander wants the inmates to pay back $$$$ for incarcinating them. Mayor Plusquellic has NOTHING to do with this one.

No. Move the money for more productive things such as education! Give it to the schools who will make good use of it.
Problem is the schools don't receive it at least in the City of Akron. All of Akron Public Schools $$$$ goes to Stupidentendant Small.

Hey Bob!!! You must be one of those people who have been in jail and can't understand that it's people that go to jail that make it bad for the people that are keeping it straight and clean in life. If you think it's bad, then move, and have a better life in one of the other jails. As far as I'm concerned every jail shouldn't reward any prisoner any type of freedom. You do the time, you pay the consequences, and the bill. You act like a little child we'll treat you like a child with a bigger sentence. Bye!! Bye!! Hate to see you leave (crying),NOT!!!!

Sounds like a good idea, but what if you are found innocent at trial?
The government should pay you for the time you spent in jail if found innocent.

This is absurd, so now on top of fines and court costs, and other expenses you will now have to pay for your time in jail?
I understand this to be for sentenced people, not for people being held prior to trial correct?
Even so it is hard enough to get a job and keep one with a criminal record now the government wants to take more money from the people who struggle the most.
The more difficult you make it to recover the more likely someone is to give up and go back to committing crimes.
If they didn't do the crime the first time then they wouldn't have to worry about digging themselves out of the financial hole that they put themselves into. It's hard working people that have a clean record that have the worst end of the deal, because we have to pay for prisoner,WHY should we??? We didn't do the crime, we shouldn't have to pay S---.

Of course the law abiding citizens will see a huge tax credit as a result of this brilliant idea right? Don't hold your breath, this is another cash cow for the few that will be collecting the monies.

how long do people need to be punished after they have served there time? Being in jail is there punishment, now you charge them for being there plus court costs etc etc. Plus now you probably have to find a new job if you had one, and how difficult is it to find a job with a criminal record.

The system is set up for people with criminal records to fail. The government does everything it can to keep you in the system. Putting you on probation and having to see Probation officers during the work day. So now you have to miss work to go to a meeting at least once a month maybe more.

This country needs to really look at doing something to help the poor and under educated folks that unfortantly end up committing most of the crime.

putting added stress and fininacial burden on a person who is struggling already is no way to help them turn there lives around.

Catch and release with no help to reintegrate into the population and be sucessful is not working.

Bad idea. While this may be good if we are just trying to punish people, if we want to rehabilitate them this doesn't make so much sense. This is punishment on top of punishment, which may even further demoralize someone we're trying to transform by adding to their heap of problems. It might be a better idea if the money were used for post-incarceration rehabilitation or crime prevention, but most likely the money would be used for real estate development projects...
Take your back off the wall and look at the obvious. do the crime pay for it in every way, Fines,Court Cost, Attorney Fees,Ect.and the biggest would be to pay for spending the time behind bars. No One put you in jail but YOU!!!

you dont get it.....
if my elected officials can find a way to shrink my share of the burden to house nare do wells, then so be it.
i didnt ask them to be a loser. i shouldnt have to pay any more than necessary to incarcerate them.
if summit county decided to send them to south korea, where it costs but 6 dollars a day to house a convict, then Im all for it.

If You have never been Behind Bars like myself, then lets start counting. How many good are out there then bad. Add up all the money the taxpayers give and then add up all the money we are getting from the prisoners. The taxpayers pay more out for the people how think it's cool to have 3 hots, and a cot..... Let's take TV out all together, if we allow any free time one half hour to get a book to read from the library and make phone calls to family and freinds. No comassionary food,ea what was served at breakfast, lunch and dinner, that's it. Take everything away from them ecept their clothes and reading material.

FROM THE ARTICLE:

>The county charges inmates $100
>every day to offset its average
>daily cost of $140 per inmate,
>Helminski said.

See, this is the problem with government operated entities. Or did I read that wrong?

It costs $140/day per inmate???

Think about it. Imagine how you could be living and eating if someone gave you $140/day for just food and housing.

I'm thinking you could live in a hotel room with a pool and workout facility. A maid cleaning up and leaving fresh towels every day.

Plus, enough left over for a nice breakfast and lunch, a steak dinner every night AND a twelve pack. And on top of it, the hotel and restaurants get a chunk of that $140.

Oh, you need to pay someone to guard you. OK...what's the inmate to guard ratio? 5-1? 10-1? 20-1? I'll guess 10-1. You and 10 others could kick in on a guard for less than $20/day. That's 65k/year for his/her wages, taxes and benefits.

Up next...how much does our school system say it costs per day to educate a kid?

Just gotta shake your head sometimes.

Oh come on ignorant person, they would make sure there was no disease from a person before they gave you blood or an organ. I am sure, if it was a matter of life or death you would be more than willing to take anybody's organ as long as it was not diseased. Anyhow, that is not what the article is about so let me now comment about the article. As long as we are not lining the pockets of the people who run the collection of money than I say it may be a good idea. Unfortunately we would probably be charging the criminals and then creating new criminals because they would steal the money. The world is so corrupt!
Oh hey ya horses as*, if you weren't sittin on your brains you would know to include drugs/alcohol and anything else in the blood, not to mention AIDS and hepatitis can take months to show up in a test, alot of inmates are HIGH RISK for both. Get your head out of your as* already and stop misinforming the public. I hope to hel* your aren't in the medical field.

So if they charge you a hundred dollars a day and they hold you there for a year you owe 36.500 dollars. Then the day of trial the Prosecutor drops all charges because her case fell through and she knew you were actually innocent do you still owe the 100 dollars a day? Lets ask the Stanley family from Norton that who were held in jail after losing a child in a tragic fire only to have the Prosecutor hold them for almost a year pending trial. She knew for month that evidence against them was incorrect yet refused to drop the charges. how much should they charge the county? This is an idiotic idea and will cause more troubloe then it's worth. Give it a rest and leave it alone. Only someones friend is going to reap a windfall when they get the collection contract. I'm ok with the plan except for hiring a Youngstown company to collect the proceeds.
Why can't the Summit County Courts collect the money?

Let's not forget that people are criminals because of the laws we impose. If there were no laws, there would be no criminals (but chaos, instead). However, I think we should seriously review the laws these so-called criminals are breaking. The majority of inmates in our prison systems are non-violent drug offenders. In my opinion, these people are not criminals, but rather have a medical illness. Would it be just to arrest an Alcoholic for drinking alcohol, and along with the humiliation, financial burden, loss of work, incarceration, fees and fines, we feed them fetid meat, stale bread, and make them pay for every day they stay!

This is a for profit system, and if you don't see that you don't understand the system. The vast majority of these 'scum' as some of you have referred to them, are not murderers, robbers, or rapists. They are poor, undereducated people living in impoverished communities, who have drug problems. If we don't want them bothering us on the streets, we should tackle the problem at the source: lack of good employment, safe neighborhoods, and access to education and medical services.

I hope that no one here has to go through a family member falling off the wagon and going to jail. They punish us too, and we're law abiding citizens.
