You think it was drabby before, well here is something more drabby. Per Illinois State Law, no person 18 years of age and/or older is allowed to attend any carnival/festival in the State of Illinois. Violators will be arrested for criminal trespassing as well as pre meditated statutory stalking and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. That means, under Illinois State Law, only children and teens 17 years of age and/or younger are permitted to attend the Maria SS Lauretana Festival. Any person 18 years of age or older who tries to attend will be arrested for criminal trespassing, as well as pre meditated statutory stalking and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. All guests will be ID'd!

Man, were those Berwyn (and Illinois State) cops tough there this year at the Maria SS Lauretana festival! They were literally enforcing a strict ID policy and a total zero tolerance policy for anyone at all who was 18+ years old. The whole area was fenced and barricaded off, there was even an armed SWAT team standing guard at the entrance to the fair with MP-5s totally visible. If one didn't have an ID or at least a birth certificate on them, that person was immediately arrested and hauled straight to jail. Numerous parents were even arrested, a few of them even fired on by SWAT, when they tried to enter with their kids, charged with trespassing and contributing to the delinquency of minors, and thrown straight in jail.

I happen to remember a long time ago, that one year, the festival had a Hully Gully ride, too.

I just noticed the same thing seems to be happening to carnivals everywhere. It appears to be happening even to such fairs as the Taste of Lombard, the DuPage County Fair, and especially the annual carnival in the parking lot of Our Lady of Charity, and many others. The thriller rides are being, and in many cases, allready have been, inexorably phased out and replaced with weak, useless, and thrill-less junk.

I think a lot of has to do with economy. The town simply can't afford to put on a big carnival like they used to. Berwyn simply dosn't have that tax base to put on a large festival anymore like Naperville or Wheaton does.

As to the speculation that "low lifes" are part of the problem, that is unfounded. The police presence at the Maria SS Lauretana festival is fairly large so if anyone thinks of getting out of line they'll be arrested.

Boy are you clueless. Don't you know low lifes want police confrontation so that they have a excuse to riot? Don't you watch the news and see what happened in Ferguson,Mo.?

The mayor doesn't even send his kids to school in Berwyn-they go to school in Riverside-so he doesn't care that much, trust me. And he isn't all Italian-he's half Mexican. He plays whatever nationality card helps him the most.

He's smart to do that.
