As a carnival goer since I was young, I noticed that the Maria SS Lauretana festival in Berwyn has gotten very drabby and not fun. The rides at the carnival part are not a lot of fun, and they used to have such great rides there long ago, rides like the Rock-o-Plane, the Tempest, the Zipper, the Kamikaze, the Gravitron, the Frizbee, the Scrambler, and not to mention the classic Tilt-A-Whirl. Something has got to be done urgently before the Maria SS Lauretana festival becomes a garbaged event and a total bummer.

They should do away with it. Because of the new residents that have moved into Berwyn it would bring nothing but trouble. Any of the old residents that are still Berwyn would know not to attend because of low-lifes that will be there.

Rico, do you have anything nice to say about the hard-working, mortgage-paying, upstanding individuals who are trying to make Berwyn a better place? I'm getting really sick of being slammed for where I live.

I haven't heard of any problems in this carnival. Dude you need to seriously get out behind your computer and just accept the fact that you are becoming an old sour fart.

Or I could stop watching Fox News and start watching MSNBC and believe Obama is doing a fine job.:)

Rico is a scared moron who hides in his basement, he slams everyone and he is too blame.

I'll tell you what I've worked the Italian fest for the last few years and overtime I have seen the change it isn't that ba yet but every year it gets a little worse, it's only a matter of time before a shooting or stabbing breaks out.

I could see that too especially since Berwyn is the new Cabrini Green.

But I gotta a feeling that may change soon. I'm sure the Mayor isn't fixing up Cermack Plaza for them to hang out.
Since the Mayor is from the past Berwyn I'm sure he's got something up his sleeve. Italian style.

One has to remember that this feast (ironically moved from the Cabrini Green area years ago), isn't centered on the carnival element alone. Like many other Italian religious feasts the core purpose is the devotion to the Saint while having a good time. To this day there are those people who just don't understand it, that the carnival is secondary to the real purpose of the feast. Sadly in the entire Chicago area there are only three feasts left with the stands, rides, etc. Besides the Lauretana, there is Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Melrose Park, and San Donato in Blue Island.

Thanks for putting these mo's right. Somebody here is stirring up the ethnic stew, in a bad way. This is what it's all about. This fest, and all the ethnic fests across this country celebrate our American ethnic roots and our family histories ...and the living HISTORY of our community. Maybe that is what mopes resent, the community. Maybe they think this excludes them; it doesn't. This fest is a celebration that the faithful community shares with everyone. Anyone who thinks it's a turf war or rhapsodizes about stabbings IS a 'stunad'

Really Cabrini Green? Are you SERIOUS? I live on the south side of Berwyn and it's a VERY nice area and everyone is very friendly.
I do however understand the idea of the fest having issues due to the OTHER towns surrounding Berwyn coming in and makin this a bad area.

It seems the same to me. The carnival side is where the teens and some lowlifes who might want trouble hang out, while the other half is where the Italians/religious aspect happen. This is how I've remembered it for at least a decade. It seems like some things aren't as good or maybe a few stands have changed or are gone, but hey, it's 2010 and an economy going nowhere.

Daily Horoscope for September 6

Sagittarius

The egocentric Moon, mighty Jupiter and independent Uranus face off today, so don't be surprised if you find yourself in a heated debate. Hopefully you won't waste your time trying to convince narrow-minded people of your point of view. In the same way, don't let others impose their personal beliefs on you unless you are really ready for a change.
