Fairs Hills Resortian

Detroit Lakes, MN

#293 Mar 5, 2009
My name is Caitlin and I am 23 yrs. old. I'm from Mt. Prospect Illinois and my family has been vacationing at Fair Hills Resort since my Dad was a little boy. I've read all the posts about Pennellwood and it sounds exactly like Fair Hills. I don't know what I would do if Fair Hills closed, I'd be devestated. I feel for all of you who have lost your summer vacation home. If you are still looking for a special place to spend time with your family over the summer, please consider Fair Hills. Its cabins are simple, the food is too delicious and the activities are endless. My cousins and I count down the days every year until our annual special vacation. The comparisons to Pennellwood are endless and I'm 100% sure that you would not be disappointed with your vacation at Fair Hills. Their website is www.fairhillsresort.com and completely worth a look. I know nothing could ever replace Pennellwood but no family should be without a place like Pennellwood or Fair Hills in their lives.

I saw someone mention the fair hills resort in MN as an alternative to pennellwood. I am curious as to whether others have stayed here and what their opinions are. We are considering a trip this summer.
Thanks
Hey Pennellwooder - According to the blog you're listed as being in Madison, WI. If that's true, Fair Hills is even more attractive. I'm guessing that if you're travelling from Madison your drive to Pennellwood might have been 5-6 hours. The drive to Fair Hills from Madison shouldn't be too much longer than that.
I am the same person (Bob Bohnsak) who has submitted Fair Hills testamonials to this sight in the past. I am a true Pennellwooder, and I'm telling you that Fair Hills is fantastic. I see that nobody has responded to your question about Fair hills yet. I would suggest you give the folks at Fair Hills (Beth Schupp) a call (800 323 2849) and ask her whatever you want about the Fair Hills experience and history. I have given Beth permission to provide my personal email to any Pennellwooders who would like to discuss comparisons of the two resorts.
I do not work for Fair Hills, nor am I in any way compensated by the resort for notifying Pennellwooders. I feel extremely fortunate that my family and I were able to come across a place with such a similar feel to Pennellwood, and am sympathetic to all the Pennellwooders out there who would like to continue building cherished family memories in such a wonderful environment but haven't yet found such a place. My two sons are 12 and 14 years old, and I would like nothing more that to provide such an experience that they in the future will want to share with their children, as long as my wife and I can tag along.
Good luck in your quest for a great family vacation spot, whereever it may lead you. And if you happen to be vacationing at Fair Hills starting the last Saturday of July, stop by the cabin, have a couple drinks and we can talk about Pennellwood past all you want while we wait for the dinner bell to ring.

Looks like the addresses of pennelwooders were given out to fair oaks. All of our friends received a brochure from them. Looks like a nice place, but too far for most.

The Seventh Day Adventists are turning Pennellwood into a training facility for their clergy. Unfortunately, it will not be a public resort of any kind.

It is a training/relaxation center for their student and career missionaries. They are really making the resort look quite nicely.

Only spent three years at Pennelwood, loved how it brought a family closer. Now I would try Tiberlake Resort in Mount Carroll, Illinois. The owners are former Pennellwooders and try to have themes for the families and bring a little Pennellwood to Timberlake. Not many cabins (6 I think)but lots of BEAUTIFUL wooded and LARGE camp sites for tents and Rv's.

My family went to Pennelwood in the 50-60s and my sister and I returned with our kids in the 80-90s. Stopped by the site yesterday (4/10/10) and took some cell phone photos (I'll post a link later). The entry sign, dining room, pools, stairway to lake, and the water tower are all that remain. There are "townhomes" built along the creek.

I would love to see the PWood pictures. My family and I went to PWood in the late 90's and early 2000. We actually started going there after Tabor Farm meet similar demise ... very sad as well. Can you please post?

I cannot open any links ... was the property auctioned due to bankruptcy? How much did it actually sell for? How are the Stacy's doing? I feel bad for them really ... they put their whole life into PWood ..

I too wonder what will happen to the three old photo albums that resided in the office at Pennellwood. They have not been there in a few years.
I would like to find someone making the the Pennellwood bread recipe that existed years ago. Pennellwood bread changed sometime in the past 10-15 years. The new bread is denser. I remember the former Pennellwood bread to be softer, and also it was sweeter. They would give us a basket of warm bread at the table and it was so soft that when you picked it up, sometimes the center would fall out. This new bread is drier, or seems like it had been frozen at some point.
Here is the Recipe that My mother got from Pennellwood:

I never had the bread at Pennellwood, but this matches your description.

Pennellwood Bran Bread

1 C Shortening (original was bacon fat or drippings)
4 t salt
1 C sugar
2 C bran flakes

Mix the above and pour 2 C boiling water over and stir until dissolved.

Add:

2C cold water
2 pkg yeast in 1T sugar and 1/2 cup water
8 - 10 C flour

Form 4 loaves and let rise
Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes
