Why dont you post how much money the Rail Runner is losing the state each year? That would be news.

So let me get this right? The Albuquerque metro area and Santa Fe get this Railrunner that cost millions and millions of tax payer dollars taken from ALL New Mexicans, yet it only serves 1/3 of the population and a very small geographic area? The state of NM is in a budget crisis yet we are throwing more money into this pet project? How many people actually even ride this damn thing? No wonder Government is broken, if the average citizen ran their households and bank accounts like the government does, we would all be destitute and homeless, but as long as Big Bill and Obama can squeeze more money out of us, they'll keep taking from the honest hard working tax-paying citizens to pay for those who aren't and for their pet projects.

Great analysis. Of course, there was no consideration of having Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Rio Rancho having their local taxes raised to help out on the Spaceport, even though supposedly it will benefit the entire state. New Mexico reminds me of Illinois, where Chicago sticks it to those "downstate" every chance they get.

Yes, you ALL paid initially for this boondoggle for the RG corridor. Now we in the corridor are shelling out $20mil/yr for maint that was deemed too little the very day after it was approved as a tax for us.

Yes, it is available to 1/3rd (850,000 more or less) of the NM public, but is used by no more than 1/4th of 1% of that group. Hence why I call it the FailRunner and the State Employee Express. They claim 3000 people ride it/day yet in reality its less than half of that as that 3000 figure is boardings (round trips) hence in reality its half that. Then reduce of further by the free rides the under 10 group gets and other free giveaways.

The figure they tout as the 3millionth rider or whatever it is, is bogus in that for several months the train was free, yet those riders are factored into the total. And round trippers are counted twice etc...

The FailRunner is a primary example of why we are in the budget hole we are, now add to it the space port and...

Adding to budget woes is the fact that if you have a FailRunner ticket, you get a free trip on the Abq bus system. Who'd losing and who's gaining?

Maybe it should be extended south to the spaceport. That way the people living up north can come watch the rich folk having fun.

IIRC, the RailRunner's annual run rate is about 21M (not sure if that includes annualized cap costs) and it took in around 2M in ridership fees last year. A nice little subsidy if you're a state worker commuting to/from Santa Fe and back each day.

..wonders when gov. employees will have to came back to reality and bear their *own* commuting costs.

The state employee express will remain in business, even if the rest of the state goes broke.

For those who look out their windows and bark to be heard, Quit whinning how broke you think your state is! Many other states are in a worse deficit than NM. I've read aboout the Rail Runner and what an economic boom for those who need to commute and not mileage out their cars. Plus Cleaner air.

Nothing against that. Just let them bear the cost. At current ridership and run rate, that appears to be about 10x the price of a ticket today.

Ridership is ABOUT 1/4th of 1% of the corridor population, and in your opinion that is a good thing?

Carpools and buses are a far more economical means of addressing this but I guess that's just not 'trendy' & 'Yuppie' enough as we have some pretty high rent state employees in NM. Meanwhile we all pay for the State Employee Express.

Yes, as the deficit balloons, we have to pay for "Special Sessions" in which the legislature comes up the stunningly creative solution of raising taxes, and public employees enjoy the gift of a vehicle fleet paid for at taxpayer expense.

I never been to a NBA game, but I support the facilty and team in my role as I bet I pay some sort of tax.$830 million bond for downtown improvement. Support that too. I guess its gonna to be free as money falls from the trees here. OKC is not much larger than ABQ. Quit stopping your feet and crying.
