Professor Bill Tishler will hold a book signing event at the Fox Note at 518 Water Street in Princeton Saturday afternoon, November 25 from 1:00 until 4:00. Tishler’s book Door County's Emerald Treasure: A History of Peninsula State Park, was recently published by the University of Wisconsin Press and has received rave reviews. One reviewer noted “The Door Peninsula attracts huge numbers of people from far and wide during the year, and Door County’s Emerald Treasure will be important for them and for all interested in Wisconsin history and environmental history. William Tishler’s broad historical framework highlights the significance of the Peninsula Park story in the American experience.”
Peninsula, one of the Midwest’s most scenic, attractions was established as a park in 1909 based on prominent landscape architect and city planner John Nolen's visionary state park plan for Wisconsin. A popular destination for visitors, a recent reader survey by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel rated Peninsula as Wisconsin’s most popular state park.
The book explores the park’s rich history, from its importance to Native Americans and early European settlers through the twentieth century. It relates the role of conservationists and progressives in establishing the state park, its development for the public, and its many fascinating features and early activities, including Eagle Lighthouse, Camp Meenahga, one of Wisconsin’s finest golf courses, a large CCC camp, early winter sports events, and efforts to protect the park’s resources from a variety of threats.
A frequent visitor to this area, Tishler is married to the former Betsy Lehner from Princeton, and is an award-winning author and teacher. Presently he is Professor Emeritus of Landscape Architecture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
