He said he hit the woman because he did not want people coming around his place and changing his religion

His religion must be fantastic if he feels the need to beat up old ladies just in case they change his beliefs.

The WBTS should not send children, women or the elderly to a potentially violently mentally ill persons home.
The WBTS is to blame for putting its dimwitted members in danger as a requirement of membership.

That is messed up. When I saw the sentence to 8 years in prison for beating up an old woman, I wondered how much it would be if it hadn't been modified because of his mental defect? And if it was longer because it was labeled a hate crime? And why don't people who rape and molest kids get that much time in prison? Or those who beat up their wives and children? Usually assault doesn't get you so much time in the pen. OTOH, I think that it should, as well as the other crimes should get lengthy sentences. Non violent crime-not so scary, but people who attack others, publicly or privately are scary and don't need to see the light of day.

The fact the guy was "mentally ill" should be a clue does it make attacking someone right , no , but it explains his actions .

While we never know who we are opening our door to we also don't know what we will find when we knock at doors and someone opens it .Especially in this day and age it is dangerous .Hourds of mentally ill who may not be on medications are left in society without proper care especially since they have closed all the state mental hospitals where the more serioulsy sick were once housed and treated .I certainly hope the old lady is ok and that she stops knocking on doors before someone kills her and finds another way to witness her religion .

Churches used to send us kids out but now they are with an adult who goes along .It is simply to dangerous .Back when I was a kid we went and loved it we were not worried about molester or drug houses , addicts and the like and the mental hospitals still exisited for teh seriously ill and chances of encountering trouble that way was decreased ..........TODAY , differnet world .I have has people knock that wanted money , wanted in to use the phone said their car was stalled , out of sight of course , and they looked creepy , had people walk into my home , that was scary , had people try and open my door homeless and drunk looking for an empty house to sleep in .My neighbor called police , he tried opening his door to .It is just dangerous .One man opened his door and was shot point blank when his son tried to help he was shot , the father died the son lived .

Not really correct, there have always been dangers criminals, people are just more aware now.
It was always dangerous to send children to strangers doors.

Well yes but not nearly as much as today and yes we are more aware now and because we are and due to the increasing crime , especially against women and children , people should beware and not open the door and don't go to homes where you don't know the people , it is to dangerous , there are safer ways to get the messages out and remain alive to keep spreading your messages .

True, but it wasn't just JWs, it was our schools to sell whatever, the girl and boy Scouts to sell cookies (or whatever), sports clubs to sell tickets. It was a different world. And reality has set in on all of those groups, though I used to still get the kids who were sent by the creepy dudes selling 'candy bars to keep them off the streets' before I left the states-less than a year ago.

You have a point.
Somehow when I was selling Girl Scout cookies, it was just a bit different than telling lunatics they were going to die in Armageddon unless they joined my cult pronto!!
Now telling people they were going to die a fiery death, just seemed to bring out the crazy, in the crazies!

Well, the dangers are about kids alone at doors, not what they are selling. I will grant you that selling armageddon is a lot different than "Do-Si-Do's", but the creeps at the door didn't really care, did they?

What I find quite telling in this thread is that the Witness haters are trying to some how make it where the elderly woman who was assulted was somehow asking for it.
Zero sympathy for an old woman getting beaten up.

If I didn't express my outrage, I should have. The whole scenario and the comments afterward got my mind going in a couple of different directions. I do think that what he did was heinous and vicious and I am sad to know that there are some out there who are rooting for the attacker. That appalls me. My mom is one of those little old ladies going to doors and I certainly don't want her or any of the JW ladies I have known or do know to be hurt. And for that man to have gotten such a long sentence, I am sure that he seriously hurt that poor lady.
I am a bit of an OT fan here. I think it is stupid for government(the people) to make laws and set out consequences and for the lawmakers and society to be shocked at 'harsh' sentences. If something is a crime, then it should be punished appropriately and hurting another person-if you are nuts or not, means that you cannot live in society freely. Simply not fit for it. I do hope the lady is ok, and I wouldn't wish anything on any JW that I wouldn't want to happen to my mom. I want good things for you-even when I disagree with you.

Certainly the old lady did not deserve any attack period unfortunately she knocked on a door of someone who was mentally ill and the rsult was devastating and she was hurt .It wasn't her fault that the man was sick .It is just very dangerous going to doors where you don't know what is behinds them . Although I don't appreciate the visits and most people don't most people don't think attacking them is right either , I sure don't , anyone who would attack a 73 year old woman has to be nuts no rational person would do that .

I am wondering if you take a look at the place where this hate crime happened - Berlin.
Germany has some very strict hate crime laws that make it illegal to do and say certain things.
Nazi insignia - legal in the US - is illegal in Germany, Holocaust Denial is illegal and a jailable offense and I would imagine an attack on an elderly witness would be seen as a major hate crime and the Germans would demand a major sentence.
Sorry to see that it happened and I wish her well.
