I commend the Williamstown Police Department and all other municipalities who have successfully chosen an economical and mutually agreeable way to keep costs down in their towns/cities. What I cannot believe is the lack of professionalism by Adams Selectman, Ed MacDonald. This is an issue that should have been discussed months ago; that should have been researched by all parties to bring to the table for an intelligent discussion of the facts, and then brought to a public meeting for further discussion, approval, or disapproval. Blindsiding Chief Poirot was something that should never happen in a public forum. It has accomplished nothing but to create a circus-like atmosphere. Ed MacDonald should know better than to bring this type of negative publicity to Adams. It is embarrassing; and if MacDonald thinks he is working in the best interests of the town, he better think again; because all he has accomplished is to make a joke of himself and the town he represents. I have lived in Adams for over 50 years (my whole life) and my only hope is that we move on from here and conduct ourselves in a more professional manner to accomplish what is in the best interests of the town and not what is in the best interests of someone's personal agenda

Too bad all the cheap shot artists on this forum didn't do their homework like Selectman Ed MacDonald of Adams apparently did. Good job, Mr. MacDonald! We need less airheads and more serious, professional politicans such as yourself who are willing to stick their necks out for the good of their community. Maybe next time all the big mouths will be a little more patient and more willing to listen when someone is courageous enough to challenge the power structure in a local community the way Selectman MacDonald did for the good of the taxpayers of Adams.

To Way to go Ed - I really don't know if this article is the end all of decisions. Be careful who you begin to congratulate, some people on this forum have been a little over the top. Looking at Macdonald's demeanor and behavior at the town meeting, most people's problems weren't with his questioning of the budget, but about his unprofessional attitude in a public forum. Ed MacDonald rarely does any good for the taxpayers of Adams, besides his few friends who come on this forum ranting about his selflessness and how much he's helped their families.

Police cars use about a tank of gas per car each day. Its the nature of the job, patrolling is what they do. Not sure how much gas you would be saving using a chevy or ford. I am interested in the use of hybrids for non-emergency vehicles ie: city official cars (health dept./highway super/ school vans&suv. Im not sure the hybrids have enough acceleration and top speed like the all gas powered cars... Can they hit 120? Also look at North Adams and most of their highway trucks. Old rusted pieces of junk, I bet they are horrible on emissions and very unsafe. City managments too cheap to do anything about it.
